01 Principles of Measuring a Foot for a Bespoke Orthopedic Last

    Does the size of the shoe measure the shoe or foot?

    • @orthopedicshoemaking5921
      @orthopedicshoemaking5921 Місяць тому

      The size measures the shoe. However, it is based on the heel to ball length. That is the length from the back of the heel to the centre of the 1st Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint (1 MPJ). What is called the Standard Last Length (SLL) is defined as the Heel to Ball measure, divide by two and multiply by three. The SLL is the same for a trainer and a very long pointed toed shoe, because it is based on the length of the rear part of the foot, ie the Heel to Ball, rather than the front of the shoe with the toe shape that os always longer than the foot. I hope that helps.

    Thanks so much for this! I learned about the Berne exhibition for the first time thanks to you sharing this here on UA-cam! I have been trying to find an original print source for Edwin Simpson's sizing tables, but so far to no avail. I suspect it may be available in scanned copies of The Shoe and Leather Reporter. Several sources online mention a resolution of the Retail Boot & Shoe Dealers' National Association, but I haven't been able to corroborate that very well, much less find any document. The closest I've come are some last girth tables an author claimed to have derived from Simpson's measures, with some adjustments.

    There is a small typo in your title: "Came from" should be "Come from". It's no big deal, but UA-cam may allow you to fix it.

    for the two instep measures, when you are using your fingers to displace part of the measurement are you having them the width of the inner measurement on the page, the outer measurement on the page, or the 3.5mm in from both sides of the outer measurement? (if any)

    It's my understanding there needs to be at least three points of contact, in order to keep shoes on. Here's my situation, I have an Achilles tendon injury on my right ankle and I would love to go hiking again. I was wondering do you think having a custom last made; would be a good idea, in order to create custom shoes/hiking boots & snickers without the full back heel?

    • @puebespuebes8589
      @puebespuebes8589 Рік тому

      Just wait for the injury to heal and strenghten your legs/feet, no need for special shoes exept for exeptional case ! Like if you REALLY need to walk. In fact stay away from cushy shoes as much as you can when hiking or running if you are not injured !

    Thank you for a great video. I’m starting my first pair of shoes, custom made. Just wondering if you would alter the last if orthotics are used in the shoe? Also I love the metatarsal bump like in Birkenstock sandals. Can the sole or last be shaped to include this? I broke my ankle 6 years ago and have crazy hyper mobility in that foot/ankle which leads to tendinitis over and over. Add to that I wear 10eee size which is pretty rare for a woman. I’ve been living in men’s boots for years now. I’m want some good looking shoes!
