The Decline and Fall of Fallen Empires, Vol. IV
Travel back with us to the heady days of 1994, and let's talk about the art and flavor of every single white card (and a few more) from Fallen Empires! We'll answer important questions like, "Can you even HAVE too much Banding?", and "How does Banding work again?", and "What's an avatar of justice doing with a pair of dice???" Ok, maybe we don't have clear answers for all of those, but we can at least ask them, right? RIGHT?? Truly, though, it's a wonderfully evocative set, and we hope you'll join us to explore it's extensive worldbuilding.

Happy 30th Birthday, Fallen Empires!

On November 15, 1994, Hymn to Tourach and Goblin Grenade were unleashed on the Magic-playing world, while the Orgg quietly tiptoed around the back trying to avoid notice. Our current series, as a whole, is the best tribute we can provide to the set, but today, we'd like to turn our attention to the marketing blurb printed on the back of each Fallen Empires booster pack, in which, for one strang...
Farewell to Duskmourn Flavor Draft

We didn't have a chance to do the many episodes we would have liked to with Duskmourn, so here's one final, rich, condensed QuickDraft narration in which we discuss the visual and worldbuilding themes of the set, the link between mechanics and flavor, and (only somewhat related) how cool bugs are.

We were unsatisfied with the lack of backstory provided for Uchbenbak, The Great Mistake in Caverns of Ixalan. In one of our first videos, Julie declared that she would write its story - and did she ever. We chose to provide no additional commentary as it would detract from the story itself, but let us know if there's anything you'd like to know about it, and we'll address it in a future video.

    36:30 - I had one of these Icatian Javelineers as a kid. I so wanted them to be good. But a one use Tim is not particularly great! I love the art of the weird octopus harlequin masks - they have a really weird mix of 300 style Spartans and Commedia dell'arte ...

      Yeah, the actual card makes Healing Salve look as powerful as Lightning Bolt in comparison. It would still be basically unplayable if it only cost a single W. But that art...if it had been on a decent Reserved List card, this thing would be iconic.

      I'll certainly take the correction - my circle at the time consisted of middle schoolers transitioning into high school, and while we were highly confident we knew what we were talking about, we may have been sliiiiightly underinformed ;) I mean, I definitely remember them being good and popular, just not that pseudonym for them.

  • @ankhi3585
    @ankhi3585 7 днів тому

    For the Aeolipile article: I think the "big creatures" of Type II might be referring to pump-knights. I also find the part where they say that once the new rules of Type II were established it found new use a bit ironic because it might be including the rule that you have to play 5 cards from each legal set (Pro Tour NY in 1996). Like of course it's going to see use if you are forced to play FE cards, it's one of the few playable ones.

    • @ManaCritics
      @ManaCritics 4 дні тому

      Ah, so "big creature threats" parses as "of the big threats, the ones that are creatures," rather than "the big creatures, who are threats" - that would make sense. And I've definitely seen reference to the "5 cards from each set" rule you're referencing, but we've been having a hard time nailing down the exact definition of each format during this time period - things were obviously still in a pretty formative state, and it seems like the rules were changing from event to event.

    Boom! First view, first like, first comment! 58:00 You got pretty close to saying this outright: The Icatian military doesn't just synergize, it curves out. Turn 1: Plains, Scout. Turn 2: Plains, Javelineer, Infantry. Turn 3: Plains, Medic. Turn 4: Plains, Skirmishers. Turn 5: Plains, Phalanx. Turn 6, Plains, Lieutenant. Now you're ready to attack with your Skirmisher/Phalanx/Infantry band, which will all have first strike, with the resources left over to raise their power or prevent damage to them, with the Javelineer standing by ready to pick off an X/1 that might stand in their way. That band will punch through almost anything in the set. Getting set up involved 13 cards over six turns, your opening hand and first six draws. You're now playing off the top of your library, but that's fine, because all you need from now on are replacements for casualties and more resources to support them. The only thing in Magic at this time that will stand up to this force is a go-wide strategy of goblins and orcs (or Saprolings) that can keep chump-blocking your band and respond with attacks you can't quite neutralize yourself.

    • @ManaCritics
      @ManaCritics 8 днів тому

    In the original novel, the thallids were secretly derived from thrulls, so there was a connection between those two explaining both the almost-undetectable intelligence that's still capable of resentment, and also the ability to work together and overcome their oppressors. You're correct about the mantis mating. I read that it's the equivalent of an alien observing a serial killer doing what serial killers do and it goes down in the alien biology books as the standard human mating procedure. You can look at the mechanical interactions between the elves and the thallids, that not just in flavor but performance the thallids do the same things the elves do, but better.

      As we've been doing this channel, I think a lot about Drew Tucker's style, how it fits in the with the rest of Magic art from that era, and as a whole, and I am unable (so far) to come to any real conclusions. There are very specific cards where it really works well (Deathbringer Leige, so horrid you can't comprehend it with clarity), but then there are pieces like Ashes to Ashes where it just doesn't look like anything in particular. At most, its a mood. But...maybe that's cool? Particularly in contrast with all the other art in the game? But no, it's not really serving the core function of art *for a game*...and I just go round and round.

      Yes! I'd been vaguely wanting to put this cosplay together for a few years, and had picked up the hat and boots at Renaissance Festivals. One of my bandmates is a professional costumer, so I hired her to construct the shirt, trousers, and jacket based on the Tireless Tracker art, Max (Old Rustein in our group photo) is a 3d printing expert, and provided me with some symbols of Avacyn, which I painted up appropriately. Julie decided to get in on the action once I'd committed, and when we told the rest of the group who was meeting us there, they decided to follow suit as well! Though I've had general Renn Faire attire for all of my adult life, this was my first actual cosplay - and I intend to get many additional uses out of it ;)

When we started the channel, we committed to avoiding chasing the algorithm - which, it turns out, is pretty difficult for us to do - UA-cam gives us so many metrics, and its hard to fall into the trap of just trying to make them go up. I mean, we're certainly happy to have our videos seen by more people, but we really want this to be a fun thing in our lives - we have day jobs, don't want this to feel like work. As a result, we've remained very excited to keep making videos, but they're of pretty varied lengths, topics, and formats, and that isn't ideal for the recommendation algorithm.
