How to Repair KORG & Yamaha Digital Pianos
If your KORG or Yamaha Digital Piano has sunken keys or keys that are hard to press down, this video may help.
I purchased all of the products and never accept sponsorships or free products. So, thanks for supporting the channel.
I fully restored my KORG C15s Digital Piano and documented most of the steps.
If you are not getting sound, then it is possible that the surface mount electrolytic capacitors on the mother board have all failed and need replacing. My surface mount caps had all leaked their electrolytic liquid on to the circuit board which caused corrosion and ate many of the circuit traces.
If your keys feel gummy and are hard to press down when using slight sideways pressure, then the keys need lubrication.
If some of your keys are sitting physically lower than others, then the metal spring has started to form a notch in the key cap. I show a method to modify the spring to restore the height and allow it to play normal again.
Some of the Digital Pianos that use this keyboard type are...

You mentioned that you needed a better camera but having combed through similar videos on UA-cam in search of a solution to the CD skips and the "please wait" startup loops, I have to say this is the best camera work I have seen! The lighting is superior and the legibility of what is printed on the board and the caps is amazing! Spouse and I brought our Bose Wave Radio (AWRCC2) - which was a gift from my late in-laws in the early 2000s - into the 21st Century by hooking it up to an Amazon Alexa Echo Dot and using Alexa to stream music via an AUX connection. (The Bose Wave radio with front-loading CD is perfect for this as it is easy to put the Alexa on top. No need for Bluetooth pairing with this setup, either.) One question regarding capacitor type: Every video I have seen has replaced the SMD with TTH type, and the consensus seems to be that SMDs are inferior. However, this creates issues with fit and may make the job more complex. How much different would it be to install SMD replacements and what kind of service life might they offer? Next, what is the best way to obtain the correct fit for SMD type? Lastly, one thing I have seen referenced in other videos is noting the polarity. What is the easiest way to keep track? (I noticed you had it mapped out on your laptop. Mind sharing any tips on this?)

Thanks for the kind comments about my video. I am using an old first gen iPad mini as a camera but it does not have the best auto focus. I'll have to treat myself some day and get something better. Very interesting about using a Amazon Alexa Echo Dot connected to the Aux of the Bose. I'll have to give that a try. I noticed Amazon removed the line in/out on the latest 5th gen Dot but it is still available on the standard Echo. As far as capacitors, I used the through hole type instead of surface mount because I thought they were better at the time. I'm sure if you purchased high quality Japanese caps like Nichicon, they would be fine. I purchase my caps from Digikey. You may be able to get away with just replacing the caps under the metal can. Many people were successful replacing just the 22uf caps there. The important thing to keep in mind is the height of the caps. Here are some links for the caps under the metal can... These Nichicon SMD capacitors may be a good replacement for the 6v caps... The black mark on the silver metal cap is negative. This is an advanced electronics repair. I do not recommend this as a first time electronics project. Good luck!

@@georgeterbush2976 Excellent. The direct links are exactly what I needed. And thanks, too, for the head's up about Amazon dropping the line out on some of the newer models. (Mine are pretty old but when it comes time to upgrade, I won't just assume a line out is still present.) With any luck, Amazon won't remove the line-out from all their devices because just about any "vintage" audio component with an AUX option can inexpensively become a streaming device using an Alexa.

Hi George. This video was absolutely critical in getting my Korg 3500 back to fully working order, so thank you so much. The only original problem was some sticky keys, but I had issues finding the right lubricant and have an important additional point to make when putting the keys back in: It took me some time to realise that the reason the keys would not return fully once cleaned and re-lubricated, was that I had not replaced the white pad and circuit boards on the back! In your video you show putting the keys back in, but only by chance did I realise you'd also re-installed the circuit boards. The pads are held in and offer enough resistance that the keys DO then spring back. Otherwise they normally don't! Also I found that they needed very little lubricant, otherwise they were too sticky. I eventually used Yamaha's keyboard grease (labelled as Molykote G1006Y) but which does not seem to be available independently - only through Yamaha dealers. Now it's all back together and fully working and I'm so grateful of your video. Although it's long and at times seems slow - your very detailed comments and delivery are really useful, and worth listening carefully to. Thanks so much George.

You deserve a medal for sitting through that entire video! LOL. When I worked on my Korg, I did not remove the circuit boards under the keyboard, thus the reason not showing the installation. I probably should have removed them considering how dirty the rest of the keyboard was. Thanks for your tip on the amount of lubricant to use. I looked into the Yamaha Molykote G1006Y but it seemed so expensive. I suspect the Molykote 44 medium that I used is similar, but not sure. Thanks for writing. I'm glad the video was helpful.

Just brought our Bed room Bose wave downstairs because the down stairs bose has died. The upstairs on is rarely used. I am so excited to see this video. Several years ago I bought a grundig Console Radio turntable with Vacuum tube amps. I had to recap that baby and with nice clean up, new drive wheel and needle I had everything working like new. This work you did was so enlightening and gives me hope. My Wife and I thank you so much. It all makes sense knowing how the old Grundig has exactly the same problem. Those old caps would leak but some did not. I do not have such a ESR meter. In circuit testing of caps is great. But such metered range from $20 to Over $200 I sure want one but where would suggest I look for a good unit without breaking the bank. I am an old retired engineer and could use such a device for my other projects too. So I can justify some money but not $200, Any ideas?? Hi Dennis. I remember working on an old Grundig amp. That thing was built like a tank and was HEAVY. Unfortunately the transformer was shorted out. With your bad BOSE radio, you may be able to get it working again by just replace several of the 22uf caps that are located inside the metal can. Lots of viewers have done it and their player works again. I just know that many of the caps that were in my unit had high ESR readings and I felt more comfortable replacing them since I had everything taken apart. The ESR meter I show in the video was purchased from Russia around 15 years ago for $75. I also purchased a Chinese ESR meter called the GM328 that I paid around $15. I like it a lot. Its readings for capacitance and internal resistance are very accurate (at least for me). When I purchased it several years ago, it came with a nice clear case. I think that cost extra now. Mine is powered with a 9 volt battery. The newer ones are powered by USB C connector. I just ordered this one from AliExpress for around $9 to see how well it works... www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804728159597.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.11.21ef1802uluCmH&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa Here is a UA-cam video testing the new GM328 ... ua-cam.com/video/YL5jjCRkchs/v-deo.html UPDATE 1/25/2025: I received my $9 component tester from AliExpress and really like it. If you don't have a capacitor tester that displays ESR and don't want to spend a lot of money, I can highly recommend the tester in the above link. As usual, I do not make a penny off of my UA-cam channel or links. Just here to help if I can.

Thank you for the video help, you are correct! Success! However ONLY the 22uF at the lower right of photo at 17:05. The lower rightmost, in the metal shield can. I tried three over to very left near the orange mylar ribbon cable with no luck. I found refrigerating the board killed CD player then gently touching cap tops with solder iron revealed THAT cap did it. Unit plays entire CD repeat mode all night so I consider it done. Thanks again, hope this helps others not to replace all caps at this time. Yes, they all go bad eventually but hey, in meantime it'll work fine.

Nice troubleshooting with the cold, then the soldering iron! Nice way to pinpoint which cap is causing the problem. Many people here have found that the 22uf cap above the one you replaced was culprit. I don't think dielectric grease is the best tool for this job. It's pretty heavy, viscous grease. Even if it doesn't hang, it would likely slow the action. I've experimented with several lube types including the mentioned spray. I finally settled on Dow Corning Molykote 44 after a recommendation. It gets highest marks from me. My main keyboard was lubed with this 2 years ago and it hasn't changed in the slightest. The action is very light and responsive. One tube should last a lifetime unless you do it for a living.

I agree. The dielectric grease is still performing well on the synth, but if I were to do it again, I would use the Dow Corning Molykote 44. I restored my Korg digital piano and used the Molykote 44. ua-cam.com/video/G96oP-ACREQ/v-deo.htmlsi=0t01yR7imm7T4ap5&t=408

Hi George, I really love what you’ve done with your bike. Very tasteful. I’ve recently purchased my own low-milage 1996 Vulcan. And am currently in the process of personalising my bike somewhat similar to yours. I do have a few questions. What product was used to conceal the flashing on the underside of the tank? The profile of the rubber trim would be just as helpful. Also, how was the Harley cowbell attached to conceal the fuel filter? I’d definitely like to incorporate these ideas on my bike - it sure elevates the overall curbside appeal. Anyway, great looking cycle you’ve got brother!

Thanks for the comments. Really appreciate it. For the gas tank seam, I just used black electrical friction tape which is made of cloth and does not have a shine like the plastic electrical tape. I hated seeing the white seam on the gas tank. LOL. For the cowbell housing, I fabricated a custom metal bracket that fit between the V Twin engine. Unfortunately I sold the bike a few years ago so I can not take close up pictures. Good luck with your new vintage bike. I really miss mine.

When i bought my used C-15, it did not come with pedals. since I only use the sustain pedal, I made an adapter that converts the Korg connector into a 1/4" jack so I could use a standard pedal purchased off of Amazon. One possibility would be to contact Syntaur in Texas. They have all kinds of parts for keyboards. syntaur.com/Part-11514-Pedal-cable-Korg

Hello Goerge, thank you very much for this video! I'm in the process of restoring a Yamaha CLP-550. It's not the first piano I restore, and in this case I was puzzled by the keys still getting stuck after lubricating etc...your explanation on the springs is shedding light on this! In general, any siliconic grease would be suitable for this job, but as said sometimes it's difficult to find one with the right viscosity. Thanks again! 👍

Thank you for your kind words and giving the video a thumbs up. It can be really discouraging to put so much time into making a video like this and not have any feedback. Yep, if some of your keys are sitting a little lower than others, the metal spring for those keys have chewed a notch into the plastic which gives the springs less tension. Good luck with this restoration. It's tedious but the results are good.
