Large Eddy Simulation of the Far Wake of a Wind Turbine: The far wake of the NREL 5MW turbine is computed using Large Eddy Simulations. The near field aerodynamics of the wind turbine is computed using the Qblade LLT approach and imposed to the LES flow field using a body force technique. The flow field is then filtered using a Gaussian filter to remove small scale turbulence and only large-sca...

    I was wondering if you have any scaling relations for the wake of the turbine? How does the loss in the turbulent wake scale with the wind speed and the length scale of the rotors? Or maybe a Reynolds number scaling? Let me know if there is a published study that I can access. Thanks and cool work!

    Would you happen to know a good MS-level research topic on Wind Turbine Wake reduction using only CFD RANS? I was thinking about changing blade design is some way to recover from the wake, sort of like a passive way but I'm struggling to find a concrete idea. Please let me know if you have any, I have to submit a research proposal in a week. Thank you!

    That looks like a lot of wasted energy. When you could easily create a turbine that looks and is designed just like a tornado and capture at least a good 80 maybe even 90%. H*** what am I saying I 3D printed one and it spins like crazy pluses the faster it go the Quieter it gets

    • @jorgschluter9936

      The maximum amount of energy that you can extract is 59% of the energy in the flow. The swirling component in the wake reduces that amount further. Hence, wind turbine companies are trying to reduce this effect, but even after decades of research you would still only reach 40-50% efficiency at best. This is because wind turbines are designed not only at one single wind speed, but a range of wind speeds and need to make compromises.

    Does not look like it's propagating far. Towards the end the waves starts to slow down and hit up against other waves which is causing that pluming you see behind it

    Is it possible to model a turbulent flow in k-e simulation dominated by coherent turbulent structures? I think in RANS simulation (in general) we would have some problems e.g. with ergodicity (averaging becomes meaningless)

      @@jorgschluter9936 but after applying this we get only stationary "averaged" solution, right?

    • @science_engineering
      @science_engineering 3 роки тому

      @@jorgschluter9936 what i'm more confused about is why we are doing time averaging in RANS without assumption that turbulence is ergodic... As I understood correctly, even though turbulence (e.g. velocity) stationary, it doesn't mean that the turblunce is ergodic. Hence, we are allowed to do ensemble average only, not time average.

    Noticed that in some range we have straight line either when we look at energy spectrum distribution vs different length scales or plots that u gave in the video.. As I understood correctly, either self-similar behavior can be shown as a straight line in log-log graph; as well as if we are dealing with some dimensionless quantities; as well as we can approximated behavior of a process with power-law , pareto of log-normal distribution in some range (implying statistical approach of course..)
