The Mighty Moo with Nathan Canestaro
Nathan Canestaro is a professional intelligence officer whose research on his grandfather's service in World War 2 led to a decade-long effort to uncover the story of the USS Cowpens and its crew. Currently on assignment to the National Intelligence Council, Nathan has twenty-five years of experience writing about military operations for policymakers in the US Government.
The Mighty Moo is the incredible story of the USS Cowpens, a scrappy World War II aircraft carrier that defied all odds to earn a distinguished combat record in the Pacific, despite initial doubts about her place in the fleet. Through vivid accounts and insights from the ship’s untested crew, Nathan shares how this resilient group of reservists and citizen sailors faced intense battles, braved typhoons, and ultimately stood witness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.

You forgot Australia in your reference to the western navies. Whilst the US joined the war essentially in 1942 weeks had been fighting since 1939. Our ships were fighting in the Mediterranean against the Italians whilst our soldiers were fighting against Rommel ( as the rats of Tobruk ) and our ships were fighting against German raiders in the Indian Ocean ( ie HMAS SYDNEY ) before Pearl Harbour. Americans certainly saved Port Moresby from invasion via the battle of the Coral sea - but portray the battles of Guadalcanal as the only consequential struggle against the Japanese. In fact HALF the land forces sent out from the main Japanese base at Rabaul were sent to Papua New Guinea where Australians fought them head on. Americans are sadly ignorant of the fact that the first land defeat of those forces followed landings at Milne bay in August ‘42 ( before successes at Guadalcanal). The Japs were forced to pull out badly mauled. Once the Japanese began their retreat across the Owen Stanley Range many thousands of them died in brutal warfare against Australians. Yes - the fresh American troops fought them at Buna and claimed victory but they also relied on the experienced Jungle warfare fighting of the Aussies in that battle.

Great story! I’d like to know if there was a response from the Japanese? Did they look for survivors? If not, did they radio their command to look for any? Did they even know what had happened when the spilled fuel ignited on their starboard quarter? It seems that it would have been profitable from an intelligence viewpoint to take prisoners.

X-Troop atts/dets were not usually first ashore. SS Brigades, SBS, beach recce, obstacle clearance or RN Commandos were usually first. Commandos were not usually on the first waves of troops ashore on D-Day either, you don't deploy your best fighting troops first as cannon fodder.

I recently read this very well written book about Felix Sparks and his incredible life... It was a book that I couldn't put down, and was mesmerized by the story. It moved me to tears and I thought about my Uncle and realized why he didn't want to talk about 'IT'... I thought, if this were a movie, I wouldn't believe this actually happened, and would more likely think it was just a script... just a movie... just impossible. I'm moved now, listening to the author,,,, it IS such a powerful book. Thank You Mr Kershaw... This is a story that we need to "Never Forget".... and I appreciate your honesty & accuracy in describing the awful atrocities committed by the Nazi's at Dachau. I visited Auschwitz and couldn't speak.

My Uncle Tom also had a similar path in WWII, with an Armored Division under Gen Patton, and fought in Sicily, France, Bastogne, etc.. He always attended the reunions, which were ended because of dwindling survivor numbers... I regret not attending that 'Last Reunion'... He rarely talked about the war with us... It was simply known to "Not talk about it'... I loved him very much, a wonderful man & super Uncle. He passed away 10 years ago, and I attended his funeral at the Fort Custer VA National Cemetery in Kalamazoo, MI.

My dad was captured at Dieppe, a Sgt. in the Essex Scottish. Is it your opinion that the sole purpose of the Dieppe Raid was to act as a cover for the commandos to slip in and pinch a 4 rotor Enigma? I want to write a memoir about my dad. He was a POW for the rest of the war. He survived and lived until 1973, but he suffered from extreme PTSD for the rest of his life. I have not read your book yet. I've been aware of it since it was published a few years ago and I will read it within the next few months.

When I was a young boy my grand parents owned a home on 17 Mile Drive in Pacific Grove just three doors down from the Admiral and Mrs Spruance. I so wanted just to knock and meet him but never had the courage. I regret that to this day.

This is a main reason why hundreds of our fast attack aircraft carriers were decommisiond as well as battle ships like the finishing of the Montana class battle ships. It was like our Navy was decommissioned and our ships were sold for scrap way before they should have been. We were in another war within a decade and we could have realy used some of those important ships in the pacific theater yet because we did not have upper level admirals in the white house administrations. Why can't we learn from our military history!? This decomissioning and and selling for scrap practically new, just produced brand new ships the Navy needed in the N.Korean war in the mid 1950's. Was a political and military situation, why did our Joint Chief of Staff not have a admiral in the leadership role such as in charge of the Joint Chief Of Staff position!? We did have hiring of commandants of the Marine Corps but they were not privy to the Navy, just the marines! Looking back, I would hope the U.S. Navy would see this and make the correction on hiring eventually a 5 star admiral! We have only had three 5 star admiral and generals, he was brave & brilliant indeed! As we over time needed to keep the Navy power structure fresh and prevalent, this really did not happen, therefore the Navy did not have the correct power structure they needed on the Joint Chief's Of Staff over the years unless we were at war!
