The First Supermoon of 2024 and Filipino myths about the moon
Hurray for simple joys! We went to the Davao Coastal Road and tracked the first supermoon of 2024 and it was a fun experience. It's called a supermoon because the moon is closest in orbit to the earth, making it appear bigger and brighter. Generally, people may not notice any difference, but we certainly did.
Also called Sturgeon Moon in the west (among many other names), we here in the Philippines generally don't have a nickname for the monthly lunar cycles.
We also don't have a summer and winter season so this being a seasonal blue moon doesn't mean much to us.
But like people from all cultures across the planet, Filipinos have our own myths and stories about the moon and other celestial bodies and how they came to be. Other myths explain their observable behavior as seen from the eyes of our ancestors. And still other stories describe what they mean and what they symbolize.
Although we went out on August 19, the supermoon was visible for 3 days but our good weather in the afternoon only held up on this day, so we were really lucky.
If you want more information on Filipino myths, you can go to the www.aswangproject.com/ to which I am indebted.
