Gliding 350k Camphill to Northallerton UK
Glider flight in Northern England, from the Peak District, Camphill to the North York Moors in a Ventus 3. It was an attempt at 500Km which didn't work out, having to cut short the north leg in order to make it home. I talked through some of the choices and decisions in- flight , let me know if you like this approach and I will try a few more...weather permitting.

Gliding - BBSW24 - Comp Directors Day
Переглядів 1733 місяці тому
Team Flying from Mönchsheide, Germany. A canned competition day due to heavy showers, so the Competition Director flew the DuoDiscus T and I flew my Ventus 3T. We followed a convergence line South along the Rhine river, then east in a mix of soft cumulus in a blue sky with heavy developing showers. We both needed to turbo round the last big shower to make it home. Bad Breisiger Segelflugwoche 2...

Glider flight with the amazing Bernd Dolba, in TwinShark DTS. This shows many aspects of the flight, from taking off early in the blue, to the first signs of cumulus, a good run south into South Africa, turning west too early into less developed sky with some strange wave-like clouds, a good run North and late climbs past home to extend the day to the maximum, finishing with a glide into an ora...

Highlight reel of the great conditions at the UK Mountain Soaring Championships 2023. The event is based at Aboyne (Deeside Gliding Club) and is ideally placed for wave lift in the lee of the Cairngorms, allowing flights to the west coast of Scotland if conditions are good. We were able to fly over the Cairngorms to Ben Nevis and beyond, North towards Inverness and south towards Perth. You can ...

Cross country flight in an ASW27 from Camphill (Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club) in the English Peak District. A good forecast, although it became progressively blue from the east, making finding lift harder as the day went on. The lift improved once back in the Peaks so I added another couple of legs for fun.

The end of a short cross-country glider flight in the UK in an ASW27b. Flying the final into-wind leg to the Derbyshire & Lancashire Gliding Club (Camphill). That brings back memories. I only flew at Aboyne once, but managed to achieve my Diamond Height badge in superb wave. It was the same day that a couple of guys set a new UK altitude record in a 2-seater, climbing to some 30+ thousand feet. I haven't flown for some time now, so I imagine that record has since been broken, but it was an epic day.

Thank you for sharing happy memories. The last time I was there was in a Pirat 1970s. Before GPS and, on one occasion, launching from Portmoak, I got high in wave. The wind from the west was stronger than I calculated. The gaps below had closed in. Descending through the cloud, I was somewhat disconcerted to see nothing but sea. Fortunately, with plenty of altitude, ten minutes on a westerly heading brought the shoreline into view.

Happy memories. Creamy smooth wave. Every glider pilots dream. My gliding was pre GPS. It was essential to be very aware that the cloud could close in underneath. Making visual navigation a big challenge. It is possible to cover many miles and take a long time to descend from 15/17,000 ft.

    • @flystiker

On days like this with a strong wind you can fly from dawn to dusk, but we usually fly for a few hours to make the most of the conditions on the day. The record is over 70 hours for a two seater and 56 hours for a single seater, set in the 1960’s.

Hi and thanks, the total flight was just over 4hrs 30 minutes, with the 300k done in 4hr 10mins, not very quick but safe 😁. For in flight relief I use a tube and bag which we buy from the British Gliding Association website, but I prefer to wait until after landing 😖😄
