Frank Perkins Founder son Hugh was my property valuer here in New Zealand. He immigrated here.
I had several MF farm machines with that wonderful engine.
The generators at my workplace have Perkins engines. Run like clockwork
I bought 2850 few weeks back, probably the top of the line model back then. Cosmetically on bad side, but mechanically i didn't find any flaws yet. Hopefully it will serve me good :)
@jocjoc20001 Very good. If looked after well it should last u many years
I use a Mf 165 with the 4 cylinder 3.5 litre.
I enjoyed that video. I bought a 83 2140 3 years ago. It has had every single fault u described and more. Ive yet to use it in anger.
Good video. Ive a newholland 376 baler and a newholland knife bar. Good machines..
Thanks for all the history of Fiat tractors. Your mention that a 6.2 liter engine today would produce 500 to 600 HP, but all the modern 500 HP tractors use 12.4 liters or larger engines.
@briansmith8385 That's true, but in my head I was thinking more about engines in the automotive sense. Don't ask me why 🤣 Thanks for watching 👍
They’re shit if you want to order parts.
@@WineScrounger 30 years repairing Perkins and never had an issue with parts. Thanks for watching 👍
Picture from founders Perkins and Chapman (2:15) is taken in front of Helsinki railway station, Finland. I wonder what they have been doing in Helsinki.
@@maopettaja That's interesting. Thanks for that 👍
While Perkins 6.354 was popular their biggest seller was the 4.236 by a huge margin.
Very true.. the 4.236 was by far their biggest seller.. Thanks 👍
Massey Ferguson tractors were the first vehicles to drive to the South Pole, one was driven by Sir Edmond Hillary.
@@timmccormack710 Very true.👍
Not fitted with Perkins Diesels. They were fitted with Vanguard gasoline engines in that period.
In my 50+ years of diesel engine rebuilding, the 6.354 was an all time favourite.
@Railfan6675 It's up there as one of my favourites, too 👍
Pretty sad that Massey and Perkins have pretty much abandoned their roots.
@prevost8686 Like the vast majority of company's from that era that got swallowed up by bigger corporations
Growing up in the 70,s in east Meath there was a few Bizon combines I remember the advertised in Farmers journal. Also saw them new at spring show. If I recall they were distributed by the O Shea tractor group in Santry. I think the same importer for Zetor and Ursus. I can recall something about using a Leyland 6 cyc engine. But it may have been like the Forchritte combines stating MAN engines were in fact I think it was a MAN design manufactured in the eastern block communist counties under licence
@johncallaghan3367 Thanks for that John. Some great information there. I'm a Meath man myself 👍
Now here in Canada perkins was big with MF but nothing else till 80's

The beating heart of many old Masseys. Great video Alan well researched.👍👍
@@FlyingFergyMan Thanks Cathal. No better man to know a thing or two about Perkins. You must have a couple dozen about the yard 😁

@FlyingFergyMan 🤣
Does anyone know what the Perkins symbol stands for, I have been told, just want to check it's correct.
@@darrylshelford2674 The Perkins Engines logo is an iconic representation of the company’s long-standing history and engineering heritage. The logo, often referred to as the "Perkins Diamond," is inspired by the design of a stylized four-lobed shape that resembles a gear or flower. Its origins can be traced to the company's early branding efforts, where it sought to create a symbol reflecting precision engineering and reliability, key qualities of Perkins diesel engines. The four-lobed shape is thought to symbolize both the core of an engine (with each lobe representing precision and balance) and the global reach of Perkins, as the company has supplied engines worldwide since its founding in 1932. Frank Perkins, who founded the company in Peterborough, England, aimed for the logo to embody innovation and quality. The clean, symmetrical design also reflects the technical sophistication of Perkins Engines and has remained consistent over the decades, reinforcing brand recognition. While the specific artistic inspiration behind the design is not well-documented, its association with industrial machinery and engineering excellence has cemented its place in the diesel engine industry.
Friend of mine has an old sign that used to hang in their garage back in the 50s. Says under the perkins badge a square deal all round.
Easy. Hugh Perkins was my property valuer here in my town of Oamaru South island New Zealand. He was also deputy Mayor He purchased my childhood doctors old home then put that logo on a square on his footpath . I asked him what the logo means?, Huge said it symbolizes Perkins Engines all 4 corners of the world. Hugh moved up to Christchurch to be closer to his daughter.
I have a 1976 case with a 4 cylinder perkins! Still runs like a champ! I'm in kanadasrtan!
@billyholiday4947 Thanks.. where in the world is Kanadasrtan? Never heard of it..
Also in Kanadastan. 1970 MF 4cyl. 10K hrs, still starts in the winter. Kanadastan is like Londonistan.
Here in Pakistan we are producing Fiat 480 and 640 for 40 years now and we love them. I have a Fiat480 and a 640 from 1976 and it is still working fine
@@TheGondal86 Excellent. Thanks 👍
Clayson combines were imported to Canada by co-op implements and were called yellow fellows
That's interesting.. Thanks for that 👍
I have had a few Perkins engines in tractors and combines. They are really quite reliable.
@@unclebud7577 Thanks for watching 👍
Huh, the only Perkins I knew of was a 3 cylinder unit used to power refrigeration units in shipping containers/rail cars.
I've worked on a good few of them in fridge trailers 👍
You made a great list of all the types of vehicles that used Perkins engines but you missed the CV12-6a used in the Challenger Tank ( yes I know it was really a Rolls-Royce!) Engine names run in my family - Gardener, Perkin and Cummings - we just can't spell!
Thanks Martin. I will have another perkins video looking at specific engines in more detail. This video is more just company history based. Stay tuned for more 👍
I know Perkins Engines is not connected to Larry Perkins here in Australia but he sure knows how to build a race engine and drive it to victory in the V8 Holden category. He is also a wheat farmer in North Western Victoria and describes himself as a blown out wind mill mechanic. He designed and built his own slide throttle body arrangement many years ago now and they had to change the rules because it worked so well on the 308 Holden V8. I think he won Bathurst with it that year. He built all his own cars and did the motors for a lot of the other teams. There must be something in the name.
Thanks Jeff 👍
At the ripe old age of 9 years old I learnt to drive a Massey 35x which I thought was the best thing that had ever happened to me , I didnt notice my dad fighting to keep his eyes open as I told him of every detail of my experience steering the little Massey in first gear. There was also an awful Zetor 7'' say no more , the 35 Massey proved to be more capable than the Zetor in the end , My favorite was the Fiat 780 with the tall white cab , if I was on occasion aloud to drive it I was in heaven and as someone pointed out the sound was amazing , something to brag about at school the next day , happy days .
@@patbassman8251 Sounds like u had a similar childhood to me 😁 Thanks for your comment 👍
In the 70s there was a perking drivers club.
@andrewmellon5072 Very good, where was that based?
@AgrimotiveFarmMachinery I am sorry I don't know, I was at ag college in Scotland in the early 70s and another student had an enemal type badge, for Perkins Drivers Club.
We had a Matbro TS 260 (K reg)with a Perkins (1000 series I think)a large lump of an 106hp turbocharged engine compared to the Deutz engine in our now Kramer. But the Perkins was a good and noisy engine.
@grahamkelland They suited the Matbro well. I worked for a Matbro dealer in the 90s, so I'm familiar with them. 👍
Simpson in India took out a licence to build Perkins engines in 1955. Simpson powers the up coming TAFE tractors.
@@derekdickins7256 They do indeed 👍
Nice bit of history there Alan. A few familiar looking tractors there at the end 😂👌😋
@eamondempsey3018 Thanks Eamon. I hope you don't mind the cameo roll 🤣
@AgrimotiveFarmMachinery it's an honor 😋
Im guessing Massey first tractor to use 6354 was the 1100 and last was the 3080 using the .4 type.
@laurenceannett7107 Sounds about right 👍
We run 17 tractors/forklift/digger with Perkins engine great going machines, 3 off which run 6354 3080 and JCB 807,418 shovel.
I've always loved the 306 & 354, great reliable and smooth engine and good on fuel too. I once drove a 247 conversion in a landcruiser, it nearly vibrated my teeth out, lol.
@306champion 🤣 I'm sure it did. Thanks for watching 👍
We ran 540ci v8 in the massey headers.. One 1978 and other 1983. Run all day at 2450 24 75 rpm.and were retired in 2024. Never touched. Just replaced stupid rubber hoses from water pump. God only knows why stepped size hoses were used when minor casting changes would have allowed straight simple hoses. Only thing they used was diesel lol.
Yes that's the joys of having the same engine in multiple different brands. The hoses were designed to suit the cooling system, not the castings. Thanks 👍
Don your spot on .I worked on farm that had MF 1800 (I think). It had 17000 hours off hard labour on the clock when traded on a Case row crop special which needed the articulated joint rebuilt the 1 st year. The boss said to me he was disappointed with the Case. He said the MF had 17000 & never had wrench near it only fuel, oil, filters & tyers.
Post war WWII, Pa brought Catapiller D4 for farm work, he reconditioned engine himself with his brother n dad i believe. The D4 was very reliable as years later going from MF SP 525 header with Perkins 4 cylinder diesel to MF SP 3342 with Perkins 6.354 at same time he brought Ford F100 from USA with 302 V8. Pa did engine swap n went same NA 6.354. Both F100 n 3342 are still running today but not as often shows us over 40 years of running n reliability unlike some of other brands that are early life problems of their diesel engines.
@@JimmyShields-z2h Thanks for that great information 👍

Used to work at Perkins (Stafford formely Dormans) building 4000 series (6 cylinder 24L - V16 64 Litre), now work in agricultural machinery so come across 6354, 6354.4 and 6372 engines frequently (used in Laverda combines and Claas machinery amongst others), I find them nice straight forward engines to work on and generally tough as old boots.
@stevehill4615 Thanks for that.. I appreciate the input. They really are a tough engine 👍
Thanks for the video Alan 🙂
@m0ogy Thanks Dave 👍
I have jcb with 1100 series engine. Disaster of engine. Very poor quality control by Perkins and jcb
@DjDj-ww6rh Yes, I'm aware of several issues with the 1100 series. Everything from pre mature big end bearing failure to fuel pressure issues.
I have a Chamberlain 307 tractor here in Australia, I am told 307 is the size of the Perkins engine in the tractor . When you first look at it looks like a 6’354 engine that was used in many International trucks, Chamberlain used the PTO of DPA pump to drive a small hydraulic pump to drive equipment, No 3 point linkage on my tractor and no Power steering either. On the road it’s a very fast tractor. Chamberlain was taken over by Case and then closed down .
PS are you from Dundalk ..?
@gerrymcardle9319 Hi Gerry. Thanks for that. It was John Deere that took over Chamberlain.. They bought a majority share in 1970 and took over full control in the early 80's.. Its a shame it went like that for them.. I have a couple of videos on Chamberlain if you'd like to check them out 👍

The Perkins 6/354 certainly was a very good and versatile motor. You mentioned the 6/306 which was in the Chamberlain 306 tractor. Does anyone know of any other application for this very nice small bore 354?
