Welcome to the wonderful world of ants!
Ants have found their way to navigate since millions of years, but only now we are able to understand how. So: how do ants navigate?
For instance, you probably know that ants use their antennas to navigate the world; but what about visual landmarks?
And, how does an ant brain can process a path? Do ants have a good memory? If you’re curious about all these aspects, watch this video and feel free to ask me if you have any questions. I’ll be happy to share more information!
Terminology connecting to ants sense of direction:
- Ocelli: eyes belonging to the winged ants to detect light.
- Egocentric Spatial Processing : how an individual perceive its location in the environment

Not heard Aphids pronounced that way before!
If they don't perform trophallaxis, how does the queen get water?
The production quality on these videos is outstanding!
Thanks!
Where did you take the video about them
I filmed them this summer when I was in Berlin. They were living in an apple tree!
@AntsDocumentary cool, thanks
You should aslo know that this species do not have a mating flight. Princesses are fertilized in the nest and leave in the pursuit of a new one with an important number of workers.
they can have more Queens in a colony!
Usually not.You can refer to a some articles like this one: link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF02223634. I am curious now: did you see some polygyne colonies yourself or read something about it?
@@AntsDocumentary my friend tryed a colony this year they didnt get to workers still afaik
@@AntsDocumentary i have seen some colony whit more Queens
Good video! I have a anthouse
Thanks! Which species do you host?
@@AntsDocumentary Formica Polyctena. I have a unique experience of their appearance on my land plot near my house. Without my support they would not have survived. I helped them and they have been living near my house for three years. I keep a video chronicle on my UA-cam channel. It is winter now and they are sleeping.
Mine haven’t dug any tunnels but have rolled up the substrate into balls. Not sure why?
Waw. What type of substrate do you use?
@ It’s a mixture of sand and soil.
@@buttonman6262 They are very creative! Did they bring anything in this balls (like eggs, food...)?
@ There were eggs a week or so ago which I now can’t see so it’s possible that’s what they’ve rolled up.
Nice video, i have a colony of one in a naturalistic terrarium. Very fun feeding behavior.
Although, it could very well be Ruginodis. I have observed Microgynes in a previous colony.
Yes they are quite a show! I also was happy to see them in nature, they are very responsive to threat. They were close to Formica rufa which are way bigger, but rufas avoid them as they were pest!
Do you record the footage yourself?
Yes I do!
You mispronounce the name
Who else thought that the girl is just for thumbnail ----->
No no ;)
Oh so nice. „Gandalf is an ant“😂
Awesome 😎🐜🐜🐜
Thanks for the study!!!
A lot of species farm aphids and camponotus is found all over asia
Yes, that is true. I showed the Camponotus piceus map!
I kept a colony of these few years back. My new M barb Queen coming tomorrow. This is just in time to brush up ty 😊
Let me know how it is going!
Tolle Aufnahme / schöne Art !!
Thank you!! Danke!!
Such a nice trip!
Thank you!!
Next ant :- Camponotus Then :- Tetramorium Then:- parachetrina longicornis Then:- Pharoah ants
ant channel!!!!
I didnt know fomica rufa cultivate fungus😅
Oops, I wasn’t very clear earlier! Formica rufa ants do cultivate fungus, but not like Atta or Acromyrmex ants. They mainly use it as medicine. When I mentioned 'gardens', I might have exaggerated a bit as it sounds more appropriate in leafcutter species ;) Check out this cool article on Formica polyctena ants and fungus: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7997191/ You might also like this other article: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0929139316300191 Here they explain how red wood ants control moister and therefore control fungus growth inside and outside the nest.
Awesome 😎
Thanks!!!
You gotta make one on Myrmecia soon
I put the species on the list!
@@AntsDocumentary nice
@@CretaceousCritter Thanks!
Superb content! Very high quality footage. Hoping that your channel grows more and more.
Hi everybody! Just a quick precision: Dives also don’t have a metapleural gland, that is why researchers try to understand how they protect themselves against parasites and disease. They thought first that silk was a protection layer but they realized that it is not a thing. Research is still in progress!
trust me removing the ai pfp will make people respect you a lil more
@@eternal.incorpated we don't use AI to make our video! What does exactly pfp mean?
@@AntsDocumentary i meant profile picture the youtube icon
@@eternal.incorpated I confirm: I do it myself with white screen and ant colonies that I have or in nature. Takes me enough time to be proud of!
Maybe he meant the cover image for your Atta vedio. That one clearly looks AI-generated.
@@AntsDocumentary your videos are amazing it's just the channel icon being ai makes everything else look cheap yk
Another awesome video 😎👌👌👌🐜🐜🐜
@@assassinschris thanks!!!!
Interesting ant species! Thanks for a nice video
Happy that you liked it!
Nice, like always! Are these ants have not several queens with different shapes like other Polyrhachis?
No, they have just one queen shape. But it is true that there is a lot of species with macro and microgynes in Polyrhachis genus!
@@AntsDocumentary thanks for your answer!!!

Waw thank you it's great!!!!!!!!
How do u know the chameleon wants to eat the ant?
