$25 grocery challenge - week 21/2024
How I'm managing on a tight budget. Oops! I did it again! I went over, but only 35 cents. Will be back on budget by next week.
Also, I ended up tossing the dumpster pork chops - when I opened the package it had just the faintest smell - everything else checked out fine.
The chicken shawarma was amazing! A bit of a curry vibe, if you're into that. I don't yet know how to link recipes, but it was this one.

      Yes. So much perfectly good merchandise gets tossed daily. I understand that some people are grossed out by this, but I've been doing this for years and know what I'm doing. Aside from what I post here, I also rescue shelf stable non-expired items from landfill and donate to local charities.

    Hi Caroline, you do really good on your $25/wk budget. Have you thought of looking into grinding oatmeal into flour and using it in your recipes, I know you can make tortillas with it and bread. I think it is just oat flour, salt and water. you could read up on it and see if that is something you could do. H And it would be great for someone with Diabetes. Just a thought. Thanks so much for sharing your groc hauls and meal ideas and pictures of your yummy looking meals. Take care :)

    Did you know that you can make flat bread wraps out of water and dry legumes? I'm bringing it up because I think beans are lower on the glycemic index than wheat flour. The most common legume used to make the tortilla like bread is red lintels but other beans work too. The amount of water and the length of soaking time changes. Following the recipe that fits that bean you'd soak in the amount of water then using a blender or food processor you'd blend until smooth and cook like pancakes in a skillet. ***please note that Phytohaemagglutinin occurs naturally in several kinds of raw beans, including broad beans, white kidney beans, and red kidney beans. Thus those beans require a minimum of 10 minutes of cooking time. Making them unsuitable for this cooking method.**** <3

      Hi! Yes, I have made lentil wraps, they're great. I thought of making them this week, but then I saw these keto wraps on sale so I figured I'd go the easy route. These were ok, I wouldn't buy them again though. I didn't know about minimum cooking times for certain beans - thanks for the useful info!

    Please be careful. I work in grocery retail. If a pack of chicken has been thrown in the dumpster and not donated it has reached an unsafe temperature or the package is compromised in some way. You can get really bad food poisoning especially from chicken.

    • @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj
      @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj 8 днів тому

      Thanks for your concern - I am aware of the risk and am very careful. I listen to my instincts - I have taken stuff and after thorough inspection thrown it out because my gut said too iffy. I've been doing this for years and have never gotten sick from it. I only take meat/chicken when outside temperatures match refrigeration, which is why I don't dumpster dive as much in the warmer months, and then only for things that are safe to leave out.

    • @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj
      @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj Місяць тому

      I have no way of really knowing. I first check if it's cold to the touch, then check to see if seal has been broken. If that checks out, then I check the date. Does it look good? Then I'll take it home, open it and use my nose. No smell or clean smell, I'll use it. If it smells off, I toss it. I also cook it THOROUGHLY. There was only one package of meat I took home a few months back that I questioned and ended up tossing it. I trust my gut. Another thing I look for are packages that are vacuum sealed liked the ground beef - harder for bacteria to get a hold. I also take from the top of the bin, because it's usually the last thing thrown out and hasn't been there a while. Now that it's getting warmer I will probably pass on meat unless it's freezing. The highly processed things like bacon I've never had an issue with. Overall, I usually don't find that much meat, so I'm guessing I was just there at the right time. Score for me!

      @@annea7526 The amount of food waste from supermarkets here is just sad, especially with so much food insecurity in this country. There are stores that do donate to food banks, but not all. I rescue what I can use or donate so it doesn't end up in landfill. I originally did not intend to show my dive finds in the videos, but as it is a big factor in my ability to eat well on such a small budget, I decided to be transparent about my process.

    • @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj
      @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj Місяць тому

      Hi Lindy. I plan to use the thighs in different ways - I like to roast some, boil some, braise, crockpot, etc., depends on the dish. I dumpster dive sporadically (been going more often when it's cold outside)- there are a couple places I check from time to time - lately I've been having luck at one store, but it can be hit or miss. I'll probably go less often going into summer for obvious reasons. Some good channels to check out on dumpster diving are "Dumpster Diving Momma of 2" and "Freakin Frugal".

    • @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj
      @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj 2 місяці тому

      I don't think I could meet all those parameters and spend only $25 for an entire month. It may be possible for $25 a week. I'm not restricted food-wise other than being diabetic so my focus is on eating nutritionally dense meals by incorporating protein, vegetable, leafy green and healthy fat. I add in starchier carbs when I feel I need them. I do try to pay attention to ingredients, and limit consumption of processed foods, but I don't avoid them altogether. Finding the balance is my goal. Sometimes I hit it out of the park, and sometimes I barely cover the bases, but I keep trying.

    • @kenyonbissett3512
      @kenyonbissett3512 Місяць тому

      Wow, $25 a month! Very challenging! That would leave potatoes 🥔 and sweet potatoes 🍠 for carbs. Veggies would be okay. Beans would work. Meat & fats. This last week I could get whole turkeys for $0.59lb. Carrots 🥕 2lbs for a $1. Eating for less than a $1 a day is probably impossible without using a food bank. My food bank gives out meats. Then your focus would be veggies and fruits. Can you eat oatmeal or is that considered a grain? Most food banks give out oatmeal. Definitely shop veggies and fruit mark downs. Food foraging would supplement the greens. I can do $1.50 a day with brown rice, not sure otherwise without food assistance. You would need to shop multiple grocery stores to shop loss leaders. Can you shop several stores? It might be possible if you had extra dollars to start a freezer supply. Example would be buying extra bags of carrots 2lb for $1 to chop up and freeze. Rarely I see 5lbs of potatoes for $1.99 that could be cooked and put in the freezer.

    I have only just discovered your channel but it is great because I have difficulty cooking just for me. I usually cook a meal for 4 but divide it into portions. I am a carer for my husband who now has to have a specific diet. Your shopping portions are extremely helpful for me. Thank you. What I am curious about though is as prices rise further are you flexible in your spending to increase that budget. I live in Australia and our prices are double what you pay in The US.

    • @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj
      @Groceryvlog2024-uz9fj 2 місяці тому

      I also think in portions, but how much those portions are changes day by day according to how hungry I am. I try to make at least 2 entrees that I can switch between lunch and dinner - with cooking for myself there is a lot of repeat meals in a week, and it took me a while to figure out how much to make so I'm not forever eating leftovers (unless I'm doing it on purpose). I started by cutting recipes in half, and using specific pots, dishes as my overall measure for the amount of food I will go through in a given time. Prices are crazy everywhere - I am very blessed to have 5 grocery stores in a one mile radius of my apartment, so I can always find the best price for an item. Most stores here have "loss leaders", items they sell at a loss in order to get people into the store. I take advantage of those sales when I can, even if I don't need the item right away - especially if it's a pantry item (several weeks ago, one store had oats half price, I didn't really need them as I had a lot already, but I know it will keep so I bought it). I also supplement with the occasional dumpster dive, although my options there are very limited in my area. If I really had to spend more, I could - I've been on this budget for 2 years, and it is definitely getting more challenging. I visited Australia in 2015 - it was the best! So beautiful - swimming in the Great Coral Reef was definitely one of the top 5 highlights of my life. The Melbourne Cup race took place while I was there, that was fun to see all of Sydney shut down.

      Thank you. I will try cooking in small pots and dishes. Nice to know you have wonderful memories of your trip down under. Melbourne Cup Day is a wonderful day because no matter where you are in the country everything seems to stop for the Melbourne Cup. It’s a tradition.

    I have Type 2 Diabetes so am particularly interested in your menus. You set a wonderful example for healthy, frugal eating. I will have to try hemp hearts.

      Thanks so much! Hemp hearts are delicious, but pricey. One of my sisters lives out of state near a "crash and dent" store - whenever I visit I go there - I can usually stock up on hemp hearts there for cheaper price, but they were out the last time I was there.

    Hi there!! I hope you're doing well. I don't know if you're aware, but Diabetes doesn't only have to be managed, but many people are reversing their Diabetes by eating a low-fat, whole plant-based, plant foods diet. Our cells run on glucose, not fat or protein. The saturated fats in all animal products clog our cells to where the sugars from our foods can't enter the cell, and the sugar circulates in our bloodstream causing insulin resistance. For more information, check out the channel Mastering Diabetes on youtube or the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine channel on youtube. Wishing you all the best!!

      Thanks for your comment. There are many roads that lead to lowering A1C. I struggled for over 10 years before I found the balance that worked for me. My A1C is currently in the same range as non-diabetics. I just personally prefer using terms like managing and remission. According to my labs and my doctor, what I'm doing is working for me. I will check out some of those channels.
