Brummie in the Highlands
United Kingdom
Приєднався 13 лис 2022
Hello, and welcome to my channel. I have lived in the Highlands from 2009, and have always been blown away by the breathtaking scenery and intriguing history that Scotland and the Highlands hold. I try to show you some of the places that I have found to be interesting and whilst I am no historian, I try and bring a little bit of Scotland and its history to you, the viewer.
I may even bring a little bit of other places that I visit too, so keep watching, liking, commenting and, of course, subscribing as this really helps to make my channel grow and it's absolutely free - you don't get much that's free these days!

Old St.Peter's Kirk - Thurso.
I visit one of Scotlands oldest churches in Thurso, the most northern town in Great Britain.
The church is in the middle of a modern day housing estate and close to Thurso beach.
Very old graves are visible along with mid 19th century graves.

I visit the category A listed Tarbat Ness Lighthouse near Tain in the Highlands of Scotland. It is the third tallest Lighthouse in Scotland and is approximately 50m tall with 203 steps inside. Located on the Tarbet Ness peninsular with stunning views over the North sea and across to Sutherland. I was lucky enough to witness three bottlenosed Dolphins swimming close by. #Lighthouse #history #vlo...

I take a walk to Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. The Castle sits on top of a rock in the North Sea. A steep walk down the steps to the bay, and I go into the sea cave under the Castle. The Castle is open to the public, and access is via the steep steps. @brummieinthehighlands #castle #sea #beach #scotland #cave #views #vlog #scottish #walk

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Canada! Beautifu! BTW, those cars driving on the wrong side of the road are scarey, and where I am located we have no snow yet. LOL.
@bmacgregor7774 We've had plenty of snow here over the past couple of weeks. We are having a respite from it, but more due next week! 🥶 Thanks for the comment. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too.👍
Nice informative video bud
@@karaokemanify Thank you.
Where's the Wicker Man?
That's a big golf ball ! If the golf ball is 'that big' then, how big is the 'GOLF CLUB' ???
So why are 'armed' police patrolling??
@Delred1 I suppose around any Nuclear facility there will always be strict security.
To deter entry by nutjobs . . .
❤
People always associate nuclear energy productions with weapons but they never realise that is impossible. They are completely different materials working with very different levels of energy. The enrichment process needed for nuclear weapons is orders of magnitude higher than energy production. Weapons grade enriched unranium just can't be handled by power stations.
@@-Graham I totally agree with you. Thanks for the information.
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands It's all about being able to contain it. I first learned about it when I heard about the Stuxnet virus in 2011. A windows virus that was able to target specific IP addresses which then concentrated itself around the area of Iran with the purpose of infecting certain models of Siemens centrifuges tasked with the purpose of uranium enrichment. It made them change speeds periodically and overdrive them to try and burn the motors out, which worked. It's a crazy story. Well worth looking up 😉👍
So why the 'armed police ' patrolling ??
Wow, what a very interesting and tiny place. I bet some of those are very old. Looks very peaceful ❤
@lainydepp Hi, thanks for the comment. It is strange, really, as it's in the middle of a housing estate. Some of the gravestones are very, very old indeed. Nice to hear from you again.🙋♂️
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands I'm glad you can get out and about for me lol 😆

Excellent from a Brummie in Cromarty. 'mon the Baggies.
@craigfraser1256 I'm a Blues fan, but brother is a Baggie.😁
I can understand why you moved to the Highlands to get as far away from Villa as possible. Teaching my granddaughter to say SOTV😁

What a beautiful spot. Nice weather too 😊
@Trond_travels It was incredible weather for mid October.
That place looks amazing, will look into it more perhaps a stay in the future.
@@charlestimothy4345 Definitely worth a visit.
What a spot 👌
Definitely worth a visit, Kevin. Especially on a nice day.
Very interesting carved stone. Thanks for sharing, Brummie. We didn't get up that far on the A9, as we went south to Urquhart when we visited. Love the history all around the country of my ancestors!
@OldHouseOnTheCorner Scotland is a big place, you can't see it all in one trip, you will have to return someday. 😃
@Brummie-In-The-Highlands agreed, there's no way to see it all in one trip anymore than someone could visit our state of New York in one visit. Sure hope we get a chance to visit Scotland again someday. But it may not happen. It is what it is.
Next time I’m up that way it’s a must visit.
Looks like a fairytale ❤
@@lainydepp It almost could be.
Beautiful scenery ❤
Very nice to see I am a Aberdonian but haven’t walked around Fittie need to go again with my I Phone Pro Max take some photos

What a lovely video, my friend and I visited it about 20 years ago. It’s such a beautiful, peaceful place xxx
@@superweetiny I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Brings back a lot of memories when the family moved there in 1954 - my father was the headmaster!!! All the herring fishing has gone and the 2 remaining boats (belonging to classmates from my primary school period) are now based in Ullapool . . . .lot of worse places to be brought up in!!!
@alasdairwreid I would imagine that Avoch hasn't changed much since 1954. Definitely a great place to be brought in! I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. 👍
Always nice to see other folks thoughts of my hometown
@@Jakawajaka Thank you.
Cromarty is a Town, used to be a Royal Burgh. The yellow rigs are not oil rigs, they are part of the offshore renewables projects. The other big rigs used to be Oil Rigs, either production or even sometimes jack up drilling rigs. They are waiting for new contracts. Good clear filming, thank you for sharing our beautiful town. Suggest that you edit the speech printing though?

We stayed at a holiday cottage above Kilmuir in June 1994. We tried walking down into it on our first night, but found it was just too far after a long day - and a steep climb back up the hill! (We did drive down to it a few days later.) I thought at the start of the video you'd have trouble getting there from North Kessock. I never found a direct [road] link on a map. The palm trees can survive because we were told by Nairn locals that the inner Moray area has a microclimate due to the mountains to the west. Less precipitation and milder winters. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! 😁👍
@@giulianomarco It certainly is a steep climb, well worth it for the view of the Kessock Bridge. Thank you for the comment.
THANK YOU for doing this. In 2022, I drove north on the A9 past Inverness, heading to Thurso. I will get a rental car in Inverness to head south in September. Your stop next to the Clark dealership showed me the light I will be going through to get back onto the A9 to head south. I had forgotten that there was a light on the A9 roundabout. I just remembered that it was a very easy roundabout to navigate even though it was the morning rush hour. Your video is excellent, and I look forward to seeing more of what you have done. I am a 77 year old in Canada, and yes, driving on the left is not easy. Your roads are soooo narrow.
@@grantw7 Thank you for watching, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy your next trip south.
Decent chip shop
Weather looks great, thanks for the tour.
@allisterdavidson4514 Luckily the weather was good. Thanks for your comment. 👍
Been to Portmahomick a couple times just traveling around on holiday, didn't realize a lighthouse was close by. Must see if ever back that way.
@@charlestimothy4345 It's well worth a visit. I did go into Portmahomack while I was up that way.
What an amazing place
@kevinpalmer7452 You must visit, Kevin.
Beautiful place 😊❤
@lainydepp It was absolutely stunning, and weather good too!
We wanted to visit Dunnottar but didn't have enough time to drive up the east coast and still make it to everything on the west coast we wanted to see. If we ever make it back over, the east coast will definitely be on our itinerary.
@OldHouseOnTheCorner It is worth a visit, we do go there quite often. Quite a walk down to it though!
This is why u don’t want to come to stonhaven cause of their weather I live in stonhaven and it’s not nice right now is summer but it’s just been grey dul and tainy
@@darlenehighings Weather is terrible everywhere here in Scotland at the moment. Let's hope it improves!
The Scottish Water cottage in Henrietta Street houses electrical switching gear for the underground pumps across the road from it. The equipment is all contained in one downstairs room, the rest is pretty much empty. The cottages date back to the early 1800's and are all Category B listed. I've never heard of any of them being connected with the harbour before though.
@@ArnoldLayne90 Thank you for the information.
I was there in June 2023. We loved it so much I was pricing flats in the city center.
@paulyfortissimo It's a great place to live, you should do it.
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands my wife and I played at the Thursday open mic at Tooth and Claw. It was perfect because home in Chicago I perform at one every Thursday!

I grew up in that house directly behind you in the last shot - 1A Links in Cowie. Very fond memories of being a wee lad running around Cowie and the beaches and the harbour, and the outdoor pool. Used to be an amusements where Aunty Betty and Scallywags is now. We used to be in there all the time spending all of our money. I live on Vancouver Island now. I cant find this crest any where on the Urquhart clan , could you explain for me please
I'm sorry I can't be any more specific. It certainly says it's the Urquhart clan crest in some of the research I did. How accurate this is I am unable to verify.
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands thank you for trying
Hey its Adam's friend Dylan, recognised the accent straight away! Watching this in preparation for my test in Alness, thanks for uploading this
Hi Dylan, Good luck with your test, hope the video helps. 😃
WOW😮
I think that’s the same Fish & Chips shop (the location at least) thatI used to enjoy going to with my Dad - when I was a kid in the 70s - all the way from Avoch to eat at home on a Friday night. What a treat that was 😂
Yes, it could possibly be, it's certainly a very old building, and the flat above the chip shop is up for sale.
I love these trips to the graveyards especially old ones. You were very brave to go into the cript.
Thank you, it was very spooky.😁
The Carron chip shop gives you a half haddock badly coated badly cooked for 11 quid and anywhere else in scotland two whole big haddock and chips properly done is 8 quid. Rip off
I've always found it to be very good.
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands you don't know a good haddock and chips until you try a blue lagoon one in glasgow or come to ayrshire. Two whole haddock you get. Not the wee half rip off one. The batter had blown off the fish and it was fried hard inside to add to the rip off
Yes, I've tried Blue Lagoon in Glasgow, it was very good. 👍
It was Manager, Donald Coleman who invented the Dugout in 1934. He was a great tactician, and in many ways, ahead of his time. He practised possession football, and wanted to have a closer look at his players footwork, and so devised the dugout, so he could sit at pitch level and get a better view of the game. Up until that time, Managers either sat in the stand, or on a simple bench at the side of the pitch.
In 1983 I wandered around this very spot. Years later I told my kids spooky stories about hearing voices from that hole in the ground (8 min). They still remember it. My wee Grannie was from Cromarty, Isobelle Finlayson (hence my visit). The graveyard looks the same! Mike, in Toronto Canada
Thanks for the comment, Mike. The story obviously made an impression on them, maybe one day your kids will visit Cromarty? 😃
Torphins is a proper posh place! Lots of nice people there too. You got the pronounciation right the first time round!
Wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that.
Lovely video, enjoyed it very much, a lot of interesting facts mentioned 😉 thanks for doing this!
I'm pleased you found the video interesting. Thanks for watching.😀
Thanks for this. I'll be in Inverness in July. It's nice to have a good overview before I get there. I'm sorry that I'll miss the castle due to the renovation. I do have a question - what do those zig zag lines on some of the streets indicate?
The white zig zag lines near pedestrian crossings are for 'no parking' in that area. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy your visit to Inverness.
@@Brummie-In-The-Highlands Thanks!
Excellent video, what a wonderful walk and spectacular castle and grounds. Thank you for taking us along. PS I think you missed the Queen Victoria mailbox set into the wall of the reddish stone house (about 2.12m) half way along the main street.
I'm pleased you enjoyed the walk, it is a fantastic Castle and grounds. Yes I did miss the post box, I will check it out next time I visit.🤣 Thanks for watching. 😀
