Apparently, this battle is basically Part 4 Ultimecia battle, which would use The Extreme as its background music. The hints are that Gaia has now unlocked a form beyond was what thought (akin to Part 4 Ultimecia battle coming after the already lengthy three-part battle), her being a woman with magical powers like a Sorceress, and basically partially being motivated by something that cannot be stopped (in this case, the death of Mitron).

No VIII characters show up in these raids(Aside from Eden itself, with other familiar bosses such as Ifrit being closer to the original XIV versions) Generally XIV will tell its own story using references and ideas from the previous game as connective tissue(Also sometimes they do use reimagined versions of characters) frankly think they are great in its own right. With that in mind the rest of my post contains some spoilers for the raid so if you care about possibly experiencing that stop reading here. Instead many of its plot beats have direct parallels to VIII. With other small references dotted all over the place(The music, the way memories play a huge plot role, and even junctioning said memories.) In regard to Ultimecia specifically the connection lies in Gaia's control over Time magic and the goals she and the other boss has(from the first phase of this fight that you see briefly at the start of the video.) which is basically similar to time compression. Just with very different motivations and also relate to not being able to let go of the past.

P12s phase 1 was so much better than 2 as a fight imo. 2 was incredibly boring and scripted once the mechs were figured out whereas phase 1 still required fun execution and full use of our toolkits to optimise.

This is Ultimecia's battle theme. But where is Ultimecia? Nowhere! Fucking lame! Next thing you know, they will add One Winged Angel to a random boss battle. 🙄

​@EirinYagokoro ehhh but I like it! I think symbolically, it makes sense. The game is about memory and choices, and if Rinoa makes the choice to hold onto the past too hard, she becomes Ultamecia- whereas having a healthier way of coping with an ever-changing future she may not have to face that destiny. While Rinoa sometimes does a good job at masking her true feelings with a happy and flirtatious persona, it's quite clear that she's still grieving over her mother's death and grappling with bad feelings in some way towards her father- and will lash out if pushed too far. There's also the theme that Laguna and Julia's (as well as Laguna's and Raine's) romances ended in tragedy, one way or the other. So it leaves us hoping that Squall and Rinoa are able to not meet that same fate. That's the way I see it making sense in a symbolic reading and maybe that's all it is-symbolism. But Ultamecia having Greiver, being stuck in the past, having a pretty similar face shape to Rinoa...plus now 14 having a character that resembles Rinoa in her looks and mysterious sorceress powers fighting you to Ultamecia's theme...that's my reasoning at least
