Howdy do folks! SEA OTTER CLASSIC 2024 was epic perhaps the biggest and best I've seen. I raced the gravel race ("La Gravilla") and the XC MTB race. Here's my 2-lap re-cap of the gravel race on a course that was...basically boring...compared to previous years. Anyhoo, were you there too? Let me know in the COMMENTS. Greg this looks super fun! We want to ride it with you next year!
For sure! And/Or make it part of a 1-2 night bikepacking trip...involving a train ride to Richmond.
Good work! Hope you sign up for the Dirty Dela CCCX
So you're doing it huh? I kinda don't want to--but as is often the case, I change my mind. We shall see!
I rolled the gravel bike on this event which worked well for most of the ride, eldridge was a bit sketch. failed the horse quiz…thanks for the stickers🤙
Ya, that darn Horse Quiz! Sounds like you had fun. Maybe if I ever get my dream gravel bike--the Enve Mog--I'll ride it at this one next year with 2.1" tires. Peace! -Greg
Wow, Greggy, that was intense! Way to go, champ! 💪
Wow, incredible! When Andrew yielded, and allowed you to pass, you were jammin'! You mentioned you weren't able to record a part where a rider didn't allow you to pass, how come? What I'm basically asking is how do you record? Are you changing batteries mid race, or does the camera stop recording after a certain period of time? Also, congratulations on winning the race!
Thanks! RE: recording--I use a GoPro 12 (a fairly new upgrade). Sometimes I forget if I'm recording or think I'm recording but I'm not. Also, in this case, I was teasing a little bit in the commentary but I wouldn't necessarily want to show something that makes people out to be jerks or whatnot.
That looked like you put in some work. You were jamming.
@@gauranatarajadas2289 Thanks--short intense races are a lot of work in a totally different way than a lot of longer riding I enjoy. Peace!
I'll only ride around Tahoe during one of the bicycling events. The signage, sag and lots of cyclists, I think, creates greater awareness....it's still sketchy as hell though! Great vid.
I've had some bad experiences with inexperienced riders, riding unsafely in that event. That said, I'm pretty sure I've come around to the idea that cons such as that are less significant than the pros you shared. Thanks! -Greg
Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks Greg. - Derek
Let's keep the thanks going--thanks for watching!
The wind was brutal towards the end.
The head wind was BRUTAL, especially so at the end. There was a very fit gentleman (on a new-gen Stigmata) whose wheel I tried to hop on, but I could not hang. Wind = "Invisible Hills" (as I've heard said). Peace! -Greg
Friends: Excuse the (at least one) misspelling--my editor (and life partner) is out of town. Peace! -Greg
Are you racing again this year?😅
I am! I'm hoping to head up early on the Friday before and do some pre-riding as well. Thanks for the question.
@@santacruzbikevids oh that’s so cool me and maybe my dad will be racing see you there😁
What’s the etiquette on getting in and out of a pace line? Do you verbally communicate through it?
Hey Sarah! Starting a pace line can begin by passing a fellow rider and giving an obvious tap on your butt/rear--indicating "Hop on". You obviously don't have to! If you're getting out because you're over it and want to go slower...just say "bye", "thanks" and fall back. If the pace line is too slow, say "bye slow pokes" and take off. Ha. Rotating through the pace line is often to the left (next rider comes up on your right, you slot back in at the back). Peace!
Showing up late to the party. Thanks for making this though! I'm a fan of quite freehubs myself. Could you possibly tell me something about the hubs? I'm trying to figure out what the endcaps look like. Do they cover the bearings? It looked like the drive side one does. What about the non drive side and what about the front? Thanks so much!😊
Thanks for watching--I'm not certain about your question (unfortunately). I'm wondering if visiting Scribe directly would give better insight? Best of luck and have fun riding! -Greg
This was so cool to see! We were admiring your skillful passing of other riders :-) Great race!
Ha! Thanks. I'd like to think I can both skillfully pass and skillfully (and humbly) get passed. It was a real fun weekend overall!
Love this recap! Thanks for this vid. It was such a fun day out there! Great job/ride!
Yes--it was so FUN that I forgot that I was "mad" about the removal of all the single-track. Kudos Sea Otter (Jeff Frost)--it was a blast. Thanks for the comment!
Yeah, Greggy! Way to go! This one went so well, it almost got me wanting to bike race... Almost.
I think you'd really like the cycling community! A lot of RACING is "racing"...and what's in between the quotes is very supportive and fun.
Congratulations on a great ride! I haven't been to Sea Otter since 2007. Do you stay multiple days? If so, do you camp or hotel? I'd like to go next year, stay for a couple of days someplace close to the event.
I have a little van and camp (I have lots of opinions about price & quality of camping, but I'll leave it at that). Bottom line: I had a great time Friday-Sunday. Thanks for watching! Thanks for the comment!
@@santacruzbikevids Thanks for the response. I'll research camping options.
Hello!!
An epic lesson in knowing when to know sh*t's gotten a little too real and turn around... Glad to hear the locals were sympathetic!
I'd say the locals were about as nice as could be! Yes, I was bitten on the foot by a dog--but that's not anyone's fault but mine.
Fantastic document all around. Thank you for finally putting the long debated definition of ‘kook’ to bed
Columbus was a total kook.
I was pretty proud of my concise definition.
What a weekend!!! That Bike Vids Creep can bang them skinZ
Oh man ! Shit and piss alert! I was thinking about a cool invention..maybe.. what if someone shaved and heated some pvc and made a fender with a sharp rear edge. Then, connected a brake pad with cable and handle to press down on the rear end of the fender with the cable actuator to scrape the shit and piss. ..? I don’t know.. but I do know from experience that heavy sticky mud (or shit and piss ) can certainly made a ride tedious. Dog bite? Sympathies. Damn. Cheers🍻music is fantastic!! Great bands!
Oh bro, you were so close 😬 . Based on your rest stop times I think I was right behind you . Yes one of the more difficult rides I’ve done, finished in just under 10 hours (only took me 8 hours the previous year). No shame in pulling the plug and cutting the ride short , finishing in one piece and not totally destroyed is always the first priority. Nice video and thanks for sharing 👍🏽😁
Thanks! 2023 "was what it was". I was legitimately injured. As you said, not totally ruining ourselves is a priority! I guess that's why finishing 2024 felt so great! Peace! -Greg
Way to face your trauma Greggy! Never known you to shy away from the hard stuffs.
Thanks! Hopefully, the Hux tracks added a bit of enjoyment to the vid!
So, Wave-1 this year was an assortment of handpicked riders (not by me), riders that made a convincing argument to be in Wave-1, and all Rock Cobbler distance Women. Even all of those together don't make up enough riders to fill up Wave-1, so after that I assign numbers in the order that people registered. So the earlier you register, the better chance you had at being in Wave-1. The total number of registered riders also dictates the breakpoint between waves, as I try to get pretty even amounts of riders in each wave. This is a situation in which we can't please everyone, so this is the most neutral and fair method.
Thanks! Personally, I was very pleased to be in Wave 2 and although I mentioned a few thoughts on Wave 1 in the vid, the event and riding was so fun I did not think much about it...to much time thinking about tire choice, ha! Cheers, Greg
Hell Yeah Bike Vids! Great hustle
Thanks! All the elements kinda came together...most importantly: Having fun, being safe, and riding my own ride. Peace! -Greg
Great comeback man! I was in the third round of starts for the cobbler, finished in the dark, what a crazy even huh!
Word. My riding time, if I recall, was just over 7 hours! Thanks for the comment! -Greg
jazzy hike a bike 🤌 love all these beautiful ridge views sweet redemption!
A gorgeous backdrop does help with the motivation for sure. I don't think I heard anyone use that exact description of the hike-a-bike! Peace! -Greg
Dude you rode great, I know you passed me in the beginning, you were in the zone. Mud was super tacky for me. I felt I had pedal going downhill and my legs were trash after and still are a week after. I will look for you next year. So far I am 2 for 2. Next year when I see you I will hit you up. Also - Greg
Thanks Greg! I hate to go against my own words and bring up TIRE TALK...but I had a semi-slick that I think was rolling pretty fast and helped me a lot. Yes, already excited for next year! Too soon? Peace!
Such a great vid! Very fun looking ride. Sending well wishes to your shoulder! I’ve got to start riding to work..very inspiring
Thanks! Getting to ride a few miles to work is such a great way to start/end the day FUN and "secretly" build fitness. My shoulder (a year after the accident at 2023 Cobbler) feels basically heald. Peace! -Greg
Did you do the Rock Cobbler 11.0? I thought I saw you during the event but didn't want to bug if it was you.
I DID! Bug away! I'm gonna post this year's video in about a minute. Great year at the Cobbler right? Mud didn't really pan out / beautiful weather...easier to focus on the hard part: the course! -Greg
This is a highly relatable.
I'm hoping you can imagine actually being there!
Now this is a great episode of BIKEVIDS! Love it.
We missed you and Shan!
I like that cool cookie interviewer! I look forward to her development on my favorite Bike Channel, Bike VidS!
Agreed sir! Not only a cool cookie but great at putting things in perspective. We'll see if we can get more Vicki B for 2024!
Another good one to end the season! Not all of those guys have a lot of money but they do train a lot, including Zwift. CX is their focus for the year. Bridge crash resulted in a busted frame and shifter.
Holy smokes! I'm sorry to hear about that damage. I think investing as much time, money, and passion into something you love is rarely a bad thing! Cheers! -Greg
I continue to enjoy your vids and wish I had seen this one last year. That's my team mate John that passed you. He's a really gentle guy but he does compete. I've gotten angry at this sort of stuff in the past but have been set straight. You have to factor these sorts of moves in. When you get close to people from behind, they may speed check you before an obstacle or move sideways. Those are just tactics that you should expect. Also, John was repeatedly trying to clear his cleat just before that and there's an outside chance it was related to that. Most likely he was sending a signal but you were so committed to an inside pass that it took you down.
I'm so glad you provided these comments! I thought it was something interesting that happened and at the end of the day, you're basically right...I was very committed to passing and put (both of us probably) in a sketchy situation. Peace! -Greg
Scene was too dialed, plug did not play RIP
Indeed. It's beautiful up there and if I have the time next year I'd love to try again to capture the ride for BV!
You put grease in the rotors for comments??? Is your bike, do what you want but... they say very clear, NO grease at all in any part of the rotor!!!
Give it a try! Ha. I'm not certain what's right or wrong in this regard, but I haven't had a problem with any discs I've mounted on any wheels (not to say I'm not wrong). Cheers! -Greg
Nice job on the video, great insights.
Thanks and it was nice meeting you up there--I've looked at the CX series calendar and I'm hoping to make it up for another event.
Hi Greg. Thanks for coming back and posting this super video!! Great Meeting you at the Groveland Grind this summer. Many thanks, Adam Musto, MIPF Race Director. 🙂
Yes Adam--keep up the good work there at MIPF! So many of my non-CX racing friends have said how fun it looked...maybe I can bring a posse for the C race next year! Peace! -Greg
Love the DV9 I have the same colorway.
Thanks! I got the DV9 for bikepacking trips--but sure enough, it's a real fun bike! -Greg
Full paperboy course, that looked rad!
Realizing now that I commented below on your second class A ride under the video for your first Class A ride. I hope this is not confusing for any subscribers! I will now comment on your first class A in the appropriate spot: Nice job Greggy! Looks like you crashed hard twice but kept going and managed not to get hurt.. AND you finished. Impressive.
cool race footage Greggyl What a neat course. Was like watching a video game. Fav part: "Let's get that guy!"
Great job Greg! 5th place in A’s! You’re moving up!
Thanks! Not mentioned...5th of 7 is what's showing on the results (but it seemed like there were a lot more than that). Hmmm.
Wow Mare Island looks cool and the "urban cx" setting was very entertaining even it not playing to Greggy B's strengths. Fun race! "I'm not saying that guy's a d*ick, but..." count: 2
Indeed! Maybe next year we all head up for some riding around, beers, history, etc.
How’d you get that aerial shot at the beginning? Did you get a drone? Also great job! Focus and calm into 5th place!
wow spoiler alert
I've been grabbing some (non-copyrighted) B-Roll for some stuff. I'm stoked it's been noticed...but I'll provide the accreditation in future BV!
Greg, well done vid. Glad I met you out at Bariani, waiting to see how that A race went for you.
can't believe we have to stop razzing your for sandbagging and instead provide genuine encouragement and congratulations 😜
Why do we do this job…
I’d like some pg-13 outtakes of you realizing you forgot your GP.
The morning was hectic for me--but the ride was a beast so I tried not to dwell too long on it!
