    I do not agree with your mandatory tire change rule because the drivability of a track is also dependent on the driver and his ability to stay on track. Lando was not able to stay on track and Max was able to stay on track (he was asking for tire changes in the laps before the red flag). Max did not have this issue and do you punish him for being able to handle tires in conditions that others are unable? That's unfair in the same way that a tire whisperer can be so good on tires that they need a pitstop less but if there was a mandatory 2 pitstops that advantage would be taken away. This rule would be punishing drivers for being too good in a certain aspect of their driving. I do think that red flag tire changes should not be counted towards the maximum number of tires used during a weekend but unfortunately that rule cannot be implemented because it is a rule that is essential for Pirelli to be able to deliver on their contract for being the sole tire supplier that delivers tires to all teams under a reasonable price. If you want to allow for such a situation it means Pirelli always have to bring tires in case of a red flag and teams want to use the free tire change and that would make F1 more expensive than what they are paid for.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 23 дні тому

      Just about every driver thinks they are Max Verstappen in the wet - that is why they were on inters in those conditions but not all drivers kept it on track which is why we had a red flag. The right tyre for the situation was the full wets. Now, the equation the teams were working on was, would it be quicker to stay on a tyre that is not good for the conditions, risk a crash but when the weather clears they would be on the right tyre - or is it quicker to change to the full wets, race harder with less crash risk and hope you have made enough time to switch back to inters when the weather clears. Yuki was trying this, and it would have been interesting to see where he came out. But generally speaking the full wets are not great tyres so team lean more to staying out on inters - which is why Lando ad George switched to new inters not full wets. So the tyre construction and the possiblity of a free stop cause the drivers to want to stay out beyond where it is safe to do so... and we are then just playing musical chairs waiting for the first one to crash so there is a red flag. I'm trying to think of a way, using the tyres we have and to encourage the drivers to be on the right tyre at the right time. To me, it would be more exciting to see them racing hard on full wets than tip toeing around on inters trying not to aqua plane. The cars look silly doing that. There are tracks like Qatar where tyre rules have been applied for safety, so it is not competely unheard of.

      @@MichaelPottsF1 Your reasons for wanting such a rule are admirable but at the same time I'm not sure if there are many fans that have the same opinion. Rain is one of the few times that the car performance becomes less important and differences between drivers become more visible. And for these fans seeing some cars sliding all over the track is a sign that some drivers are not as good as others. It would be nice if more cars are able to continue after sliding off but the act of sliding off is not the issue. I agree that the current full wet tires are not really up to par and that the advantages of staying out on the inters are too great compared to switching to full wet tires. And I also think that the cars, or better said the floors that are on the current generation of cars, are not helpful in finding a solution. Drivers have highlighted that at some tracks by the time it is wet enough for the full wet tires there is so much spray that a red flag is called. I think the solution should be found in making it more attractive to go to the full wet tires than forcing the moment at which the full wet tires should be used. Choosing the right moment to go on full wet tires is just as important a skill that drivers must excel at as choosing the right moment to go on inters. Seeing cars slide off is for most fans a sign that a driver is enjoying the consequences of taking too much risk or making the wrong choice. I don't know if it is possible to make the performance of the inters worse (eg have the inters carry away less water) so that the moment that cars have to switch, because the full wet tires are faster, comes sooner? Another rule change that may help is to increase the number of full wet tires and decrease the number of inters that Pirelli brings to a track and make it so that teams only have 1 inter tire and multiple wet tires. Making the inter scarce might make teams want to safe the tire for the right moment.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 21 день тому

      It's an interesting one - the teams are always looking for the quickest way to complete 300kms. It just doesn't feel right when the quickest way involves doing the thing that is about to get the race stopped. It's like telling a kid to run quicker with the scissors so there is less time that its dangerous - I'm not sure if that is the right analogy - but something like that :)

    Thank you for this video and your well thought pledge for a rule change. Nevertheless: that will be in favor of the less talented drivers. Safety is a point, but overall: was Interlagos unsafe? Nobody got hurt. Gliding off track in the rain seems less dangerous than a crash in dry circumstances. And: reading the game is strategy as well. I enjoyed the different interactions between drivers and engineers.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 23 дні тому

      The reason it was red flagged was because it was unsafe. So the FIA decided that. I think it was unsafe because the conditions were full wets but most cars were on inters. Cars were crashing because they were aqua plaining. There was a lot of water falling in a very very short period of time and it pools on this track. In the space of 1 lap you have a completely different surface to what there was last lap, plus the spray and rain which was so thick I could not see cars 10 meters away…. You can see why it’s dangerous. It’s not just dangerous for the drivers, there are a lot of personal on track who don’t have the same protection the drivers do. You have to think about them, the standing water means parts of the track which are safe under dry conditions can be very dangerous under wet conditions. There is a massive puddle after turn 5 with a low barrier and no catch fencing and a marshel post in the middle. In the dry it should be safe… in the wet it’s a risk. And even if you look at it from a pure entertainment perspective what’s the joy in seeing franco crash under the safety car? Surely it’s a better race with him in it? The rule is asking drivers to take a very large risk in return for a big reward. It’s not the right balance.

  • @superkoosable
    @superkoosable 24 дні тому

    There two reasons for the red flag. Safety reasons and that someone can be unfortunate to need a pit stop , beecause of debrit on the track that causes the red flag. Also, Max tires were still good, because of good driving. Forcing a mandaorty pit stop is than also unfair.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 23 дні тому

      To be honest… it’s safety and entertainment. If they need to replace a barrier or there is a massive clean up, no one wants to watch cars drive around behind the safety car burning laps for 20 mins. It’s more entertaining to bring them in and have a restart. Having a red flag is a good thing. Asking the drivers to take risks before the red flag to gain a big reward is the bad thing

    You talk about forcing people to switch tyre's to avoid danger, Max was driving his mini kart age 7 at 50Mph in the rain on slicks. So he is used to those 'dangerous' conditions. Must we avoid danger at all costs? We're talking about what is supposed to be the most skilled racers in the world. If this is the direction F1 goes i am not going to like it. Do we really want to make it safe to the point 60 years old drivers can still compete? Take a *beep* risk please, while working on systems that avoid death or (serious) injury if they crash. Nobody wants to see them hurt but we need that element of danger as well.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 24 дні тому

      Formula 1 is already a very dangerous sport and not every driver in Max Verstappen, so you wouldn't make a rule based on him alone. I stand on the track, often just centimeters away from these cars often with just a metal barrier between me and them, maybe some catch fencing if I'm lucky. Just look at how close a camera man got to losing a hand in Mexico. Sure, we all could stand further back but then maybe the sport wont be as fun to watch for people at home. It's not just the drivers who put themselves at risk it is also all the volunteer marshalls.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 24 дні тому

      I'm not advocating a rule change to change the result, but to stop drivers using tyres that are not safe for the conditions. If Franco crashed on new inters it shows how dangerous it was - it also shows how good a job the risk drivers did in not crashing. If Max and the Alpines knew they had to make a stop during the race, they probably would have come in at the same point as Lando and George because under the safety car they would have saved a bit of time. Had Max been forced to make a stop he probably would have come out behind George and ahead of Charles - it's about a 30 second off set in Interlagos. The suggested rule change still doesn't stop Lando fluffing the restart and it is still and epic drive by Max.

      The tires and red flags, heck, most fia rules for that matter seem to be needing review, but Max was winning that race no matter what happened. He was exponentially faster than the next fastest guy. Anyone saying he was lucky is an idiot. Like Lando unfortunately. Max always stood up for max and proper him up as a good friend does and as soon as Lando got his first win it was a fast downward slide to completely turning his back on Max for no reason other than jealousy and believing he is as good if not better.

      I don't normally stand up for Stroll, but he is one of the better wet weather drivers out there. If you were in Monza in 2017 and saw how he drove that Williams you would agree... now, he might not know an access road from a sand trap but I can't think of a rule to help him there. Max would have probably won this race with or without a free pit stop unless they didn't red flag it and kept the cars lapping under the safety car (so before Franco's crash). Because the field would have bunched and him and the Alpines would then have pitted and been near the back. It was a gamble, luck was on his side even if the probability was high it would be red flagged.

    The red flag rules are the same for everyone. And like you said, the free tyre change is there for safety reasons. It's become somewhat annoying that people start complaining about this rule, every time their driver lost out. You win some, you lose some. What's next? Closed pit lane during a safety car? Because that can make a difference too... Verstappen and Alpine took a chance. An educated guess. One that was risky, but that could pay off massively. Verstappen, Pierre and Ocon had the tyres and the skills to keep it on track. They are allowed to be rewarded for that. It wasn't just luck. Lando was already asking for a stop way before any of the SC's or the red flag. George wanted to stay out too because he saw the red flag coming, but his team wanted him to pit. Some teams had opted for the full wet tyres during the safety car pit stop, but were able to switch back to inters for free during the red flag. No complaints from them either. A free stop under red flag conditions is just another part of the strategy. One that's available to every team. But maybe some teams just don't trust their cars or drivers enough.

    • @MichaelPottsF1
      @MichaelPottsF1 24 дні тому

      Its not because of the result - it's just unsafe when the track is that wet. If there was not going to be a red flag or free tyre changes then everyone would have come in for full wets. Maybe, Franco wouldn't crash at that point. I believe he had just changed to inters, but I think the conditions meant it should have been full wets. None of the drivers like the full wets, but when you give them a carrot of a free tyre change if they stay out a bit longer they will take huge risks. Maybe, rather than waiting until the track is unsafe for inters, they could say all drivers need to stop for full wets when x amount of rain has falled depending on the tracks drainage. It's not a critisim of Max or the Alpines - they followed the rules perfectly and it worked out. It's a critisim of the rules, because, not all drivers will be able to keep their cars on the track in those conditions, and one day we will have a big crash.

      @@MichaelPottsF1 - If they don't trust the conditions of the track and it's too wet, the race director should just call the red flag sooner. Especially as long as the full wets aren't good. (Drivers were asking for a red flag for a while.) If they refuse to do that, then it's just the way things are and it's up to the teams and drivers to do the risk assessment. Looking at your idea: what if drivers came into the pits during a safety car and then after 2 laps the race director declares that everyone has to go to the full wets? You will end up with the same results. You win some, you lose some. This situation could also be very unsafe, because teams might have to dubble stack, leaving cars in the fast lane waiting and causing traffic jams and / or collisions. Not to mention the unsafe releases. In Zandvoort during the wet race, teams opted to leave one driver out for another lap, because there was not enough space. The problem right now is, that the moment the full wets need to be used, it's red flag conditions.

      It's a difficult situation, because the conditions were ok for Yuki using the right tyre - if the race had continued he would have had to have stopped in a few laps because the conditions improved to Inters fairly quickly - maybe it was 10 or 15 mins when it was very bad. It's not about who does or doesn't get an advantage during the stops - if that really was the objective we would be using Michelin Tyres and not have pit stops at all - so it would just be about the racing and probably the pole man (or if Norris was on pole the number 2 man) winning each race :) It's about finding a way to stop incentivising drivers staying out in conditions which are unsafe because they will get an advantage. I am sure that even if we come up with a better system some drivers will game that better than others. It's a risk/reward question. Right now I think we are asking the drivers to risk too much for too big a reward.

    I have been shooting road racing since the 1970’s I would pick a point on the track and focus on it and set the lens at F/8 and wait for the car to hit that spot never had a bad shot not sure if auto focusing is all that. All the famous street photographers would shoot with 35mm or a 28mm at F/8 or F/11 and every thing from 4 feet to infinity would be focus I have a Nikon D500 with the 300mm F/4 Nikkor and a D750 and a Tamron 17-35mm.I have the advantage of racing most of the road course’s in the state’s which gives me the insight of where to shoot at I shot with my Canon F-1 film camera and a 500mm F/4 and when I showed the pictures to people in the Porsche club they film ones better without me telling them it was a film image

      It has gone up a lot. Most track tickets have doubled since the pandemic. I find you can still get good deals on accommodation and flights. The quality of the show has also improved. Many venues also have concerts and other supporting events. This week in Austin you could also see Sting and Eminem.

      There is a spot outside turn 3 which is epic. Few people go there but still try and be early. Best spot for GA for the start of the race. If that’s full then turn 4 looking down the straight. It’s a good race for GA. Explore as much as you can
