Windrock Trail 27 - 3rd Gen 4Runners
It's March of 2024 and we're at the Shamrock Shakedown event at Windrock. On the second day of the event we took time to ride Trail 27. This trail has a huge muddy area about middle way of the trail. The mud adds to the adventure. Thanks for watching!

Uwharrie opened for the 2024 season in April. We drove from Raleigh on a Saturday to meet up with some friends. Of course, we started at the Eldorado Outpost. What a day we had on those trails. This video features Miles in 3rd Gen 4Runner (long travel!) and Hunter in the massive GX 470. I’m driving my favorite rig, the classic 3rd Gen. The video footage shows us driving up backside and going do...

It's March of 2024 and we're back at Windrock Off Road Park for adventure time. We drove from Raleigh on Thursday to attend the Shamrock Shakedown event. Friday and Saturday were the designated trail riding days for Shamrock. On Saturday, Miles and I decided to run Trail 30. In this video you'll see the 3rd Gens traveling up Trail 30 through a series of rock gardens. Great trail for sure!

Trail 51 at Windrock takes you to Panther Rock. The view is super cool from Panther Rock. Traveling trail 51 can be challenging, especially if muddy. The sun went down and that added to the fun factor for the ride back out.

We're at Uwharrie on a pretty nice December day. Our last trip for the season. I'm testing out the rear locker installed only a few weeks ago. On Dutch John Trail #90, there's a challenge called the "Rocky Switch Back". At the bottom there's a cool hang out spot.
3rd Gen 4Runner - Assisted by Rock

This is hilarious. I'm having a tough time getting up a rock ledge on Dickey Bell at Uwharrie National Forest. Buddy Sam puts a rock under the rear tire to give the 3rd Gen a little assistance. I hit the gas and the rock spun out the back. Funny part is the rock slapped the muffler pipe and went "ping".

It's May of 2023 and we're together again at Uwharrie with the 3rd Gens. This video captures footage of Miles and David making light work of the slip rock section of Daniel Trail 390. The rocks were completely dry on this particular day. When wet, these rock slabs are much harder to climb.

rough country lift?
I'm running a Dobinson's lift on my 4Runner. Miles has a Radflo lift on his 3rd Gen (sport model). David is running Kings.
What brand lift and what size tire brother?
Hey now! Radflo coilovers on the front end with Old Man Emu springs and Fox shocks on the rear. The tires are 35s (315/76/16).
What kinda rear bumper is that? Best, Tiz
@@tiztiz-ex15Hey! The front and rear bumpers are made by 4xinnovations.
does all of them have rear lockers because sometime it spines and sometime it does not.
Yeah, these trucks do have rear lockers. In the video, on the slip rock area, I'm not sure if the lockers were engaged.
What tire size are these two setups? I assume the first is tubbed and appears to have extensive suspension work up front
Miles' truck (2001 SR5 with sport hood) is tubbed and he is running 35s (315/75/16). This truck is crazy with the long travel suspension. I'm running 33s (285/75/16) on my 2002 Limited. No tubbing, but did do the pinch weld modification on the front wheel wells. Thanks for asking!
@@Wuffpacker appreciate it! I’m thinking I’m gonna go 285s on mine as well, the Toyo rt trail has caught my eye and that’s the biggest 16” size u can get them in.
@@adsnse6958 Good idea to go with the 285s. I'm running the Yokohama Geolander MTs. Miles is partial to the Toyo Open Country MTs.
Good video. I missed running 27 and 26 on my first visit to Windrock. I will be back soon to run some more trails.
Thanks for your comments. Those two trails make a great combo. We ran them in January and again in March of this year. Trail 26 is a bit more challenging than 27. Trail 27 has this massive muddy area, which made for some fun slip and slide.
The music, ugggg
Looks like a nice trail system. I would like to try it in my 80 series Land Cruiser.
If you’re in North Carolina, this is the place to go off roading. Adventure awaits. Thanks for commenting.
@@Wuffpacker someday, need vacation time to make it happen.

nice vids... what tires you guys prefer?
Hey, thanks! I'm running Yokohama Geolander MTs (33s) and Miles has Toyo Open Country MTs (35s) on his 4Runner. Falken Wildpeak ATs are great for on and off road situations. The Wildpeaks give a better road ride, while the Geolanders are better for the mud.
Third Gen 4Runner owner myself. Enjoyed the video. Ive ridden same trail several times but not with as beautiful scenery. Thanks for taking us along! Did I spy a GMRS antenna on the hood? I'm curious as to how you ran the wire. I'm considering adding a GMRS radio.
Hey, yeah we got lucky to run the trail during snowy conditions. That was a fun time. I do have a Midland MXT275 radio for communicating with my buddies while on the trails. The antenna wire runs through the firewall rubber seal near the left side of the steering column. You can remove the connector on the antenna wire to make the wire skinny enough to fit through the firewall rubber seal. The MXT275 works perfectly with the Midland MXTA27 (hood mount with antenna wire) and the MXTA25 3DB gain ghost antenna). Not very expensive. Amazon!

always think these look best in Silver, then black 2nd. a future classic for sure
Thanks! I do like the classic silver. A black 4Runner would be awesome to have. That's my second choice too. I've joked about collecting one of every color.
@@Wuffpacker silver hides the dirt! They look great in green too, maybe a sign of good design.
i saw your 4runner in downtown raleigh yesterday haha, had to look at it twice cause it was dope
What about the g wagon!!!
Yeah, how about the g wagon! The wagon did well on the Windrock trails. Was amazing. Has a ton of horsepower.
Where’s the hard trail… looks like a mountain dirt road.
Trail 26 is a heck of a trail. Windrock has 300 miles of trails and this is one of my favorites.
Awesome 3rd Gens. Nice👍🏾💯
Right on, love your comment!!!
Awesome 👍🏾
Thanks so much! Just having fun out there on the trails.
This footage reminds me i really should get that front Truetrac installed.
Sounds like a good idea to me. My 4Runner now has a rear locker in addition to the center diff locker. I'm crawling up rocks much easier now.
Definitely want to hit this trail as well. Only 1 hr for me to get to that trail. On the big deep rutted out section, how wide is that rut. I am pushing 84” wide. Hopefully I will fit or may have to ride up on one of the sides. 🤷♂ By comparison do you know how wide you 4runner is (outside tire width)?
The 4Runner is around 70 inches wide counting the tires. On this trip in 2023, my buddy was ahead of me in a full size Tundra with 37s. He did fine on the trail. Not sure how wide that rutted out spot is. There's a drop off to the right side. On this trip, we got lazy and didn't air down the tires. Reason is, we were tired out after wheeling 3 straight days at Windrock. We did the Hurricane Creek Trail on way back to Raleigh. Airing the tires down would have made Hurricane Creek a little easier. Have fun on them trails.
@@Wuffpacker If that Tundra fit, I can certainly fit as well. About the same width as the Tundra with 3” longer wheelbase and 5” longer overall comparatively.
@@redbeastadventures Yep, absolutely!
Yeah, you’re going to love Trail 30. Big time fun.
Can’t wait to run that trail in the Red Beast.
Heck yeah. Your truck is certainly a Beast! Just took a look. Wow, 37s!
@@Wuffpacker Taking it off road next week for its maiden voyage. Plan on going somewhat local to Brown Mountain. I will be getting to Windrock and Uhwarrie after I do some camp testing and shake down.
@@redbeastadventures You must be excited about the first trip. We'll be headed to Uwharrie when the park opens back up for the season. Brown Mountain sounds like a winner.
@@Wuffpacker Who knows I might see you out in Uwharrie soon. Probably do that one in the near future before it gets too hot.
What size tires are on the gray 5th gen?
Those tires are 285/75/17s. Puts them around 34 size. Thanks!
@@Wuffpacker Thanks bro, all nice rigs
Great trail.
Right on!
Looks fun 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
Go to a road more spice ! Those trucks deserve it
Was that a sequoia in the very front? What year model of a sequoia would you recommend? Or 4Runner
Greetings. The truck at the front of the line is a Lexus GX 460. The popular GX off roader is the Lexus GX 470. The 470 model is a match to the 4th Gen 4Runner (made from years 2003 to 2009). The 470 comes with the 4.7 liter engine (nice!!). My favorite off roading vehicle is the 3rd Gen 4Runner (made 1996-2002). My rig is a 2002 model with rear locker added. The 4th Gen 4Runners are great for wheeling too. I'm partial to the 3rd Gen cause it's skinnier, lighter, and you can put all kinds of modifications on it.
This is a great trail!
Absolutely! Going up the big hill in the dark added to the challenge.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
That looks like so much fun! I need to get out there soon!

Looks like a great time! Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to get my 21 T4R offroad but I need to save up to protect her first...
We've been off roading for about 5 years. It is so fun. Best of luck with getting your 5th gen armored and ready. My body armor protection started with the front engine skid plate. Next, added the front bumper. After that, got some rock sliders (bolt on type). Most recently added the rear bumper with tire swing out. Thanks for watching the video and providing comment!
where did you get the all clear tailights they look great
Thanks, man! Regret to say those clear tail lights were discontinued. Miles and David got some for their rigs before that happened. I'm stuck running the Toyota OEM ones.
ahh makes sense, thank you!@@Wuffpacker
Friend, excuse the question or rather what advice do I have, I want to buy some 35s Yokohama tires like the ones that my friend David's 4runner has, but my doubt is that if the 35s when turning the ball bearing are not going to rub against the mud guard since if I buy the wheels with off being -20. Maybe that doesn't happen. I ask you because I have a limited budget to buy the tires. You imagine that if the 35 doesn't fit, I won't be able to install them. My 4runner only has two inches raised.
Thanks for commenting and asking about tires. I’m running 33s on my 4Runner. They are Yokohama Geolander MTs 285/75/16. Excellent tires for off roading, especially when in muddy conditions. My good friends Miles and David have 35s on their 4Runners. These guys had to cut out a portion of metal from the wheel wells to make the bigger tires fit. Some people call this “tubbing out” the wheel wells. I’m going to stay with the 33-inch tires on my 4Runner to avoid having to tub it out. The 35s are great if you’re willing to chop off some metal (maybe some plastic too), to make them fit. The 35s will most certainly cause tire rub without modifications to the wheel wells on the front end.
What kind of lower control arms are you running on the longtravel 4runner? The grill looks modern, almost inspired by a newer FJ Cruiser. Thank you!
Those lower control arms are made by BTF Fabrication. Miles has this truck set up with some nice stuff! The Toyota grill does look a lot like the FJ Cruiser. Thanks!
Does this mean the headlight quality should be better now? Been considering getting a set for awhile, but got scared off by the quality issues that some people were posting.
Hey! I've had great success with the retrofit lights from TEQ. The guys there are the best in the business. My favorite look is the ones with black housings with turbine shroud. Initially, I put a set on my 3rd Gen 4Runner. Later, got a set for my 4th Gen 4Runner. Recently put a set on my FJ Cruiser. Looks sweet! Crazy about Toyotas.
I know you dont have a huge following but im always excited watching your stuff, thanks for sharing it!!!
Hey. I love your comment! Thanks so much for your interest watching the channel. Of course, the vids are amateur at best. Its all about having fun with the old classic 4Runner. You may have noticed the new rear bumper with tire swing out. It's made by TrueNorth. And now I'll wheeling with a rear locker. Me and Miles did the "axle swap" a couple weeks ago. The rear locker allows me to crawl up the tough areas easily.
it looks soooo sick, have you noticed the weight at all? Trying to decide if I want a tubular swing out or a full steel like yours.@@Wuffpacker
The weight was a concern of mine when deciding which rear bumper to purchase. I held off on this for about two years. This particular base bumper weighs 95 lbs. The swing-out adds about 40. When installed, the rear end dropped about 1/2 inch in height. I'm running medium-weight rear coil springs. Very happy having the new addition to the runner. The tube bumper would be a nice option. I'm partial to the plate bumper look.@@Akuri71
What grille does that 4runner from the thumbnail have? I've got the Satoshi grille in my 98, I like the thumbnail one better.
I'm pretty sure this grill came from TEQCustoms, our local Raleigh NC shop. The one you're asking about belongs to my good buddy Miles. TEQ offers a similar grill for 3rd Gens. From their website.. TEQCustoms.com... go to "Shop by Vehicle". Select the 3rd Gen option and then click on "Grilles". Thanks!
@@Wuffpacker Thanks!
Wayyy too much throttle. Things twist and snap really easily with those revs.
Yep. So that was a moment of desperation meant to be funny. The ole 4Runner now has a rear locker. Recently installed. Slow and easy wins the race.
