Sailing a Timeless Classic - The Melonseed Skiff
This video is about two Melonseed skiffs sailing on Lake Saint-Louis near Montreal, Quebec, Canada on October 21st, 2024. A fine autumn day and a lively breeze made for a perfect afternoon for our last sail of the 2024 season. The lake level was low so our pivoting PVC centerboards touched the river bottom on a few occasions. We mostly had the lake to ourselves on that day with the exception of a Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft servicing some aids to navigation.

    Wow those are pretty boats under sail too. I see that they're a "class" of boats. I used to sail a Hobie 16 years ago but nothing as relaxing as these guys. Those things were WORK but the kids loved it. They didn't have daggerboards though so they didn't point very well but it didn't matter because they were FAST (which kinda made up for their lack of point). That is IF you could get through the day without dumping it.. which we rarely did! this was in the Jensen Beach, FL area. Like yesterday but in reality over 40 years have passed.

      Thanks and yes, the Melonseed skiff … easy to transport, rig and launch … loads of fun to sail and pleasing lines that delight the eye from any perspective. ⛵️😄

      Thanks! The videos have certainly evolved over the 10 years that I’ve been sailing the Melonseed … glad you enjoy them!

      Thanks! The sounds of summer … kids playing on the yacht club grounds, mast halyards tinkling in the harbour, waves splashing, birds singing, … that seemed to be all the musical accompaniment that this video needed. Next time perhaps some music … thanks for watching.

    I sailed a few times on friends boats in that region. I even spent the night at anchor on my Sandpiper 565 in Dowker island's bay! The lake is a very nice place to sail. That was a very good sail you had that day with your friends. 😎👍

      Agreed ... lac Saint-Louis is a fine sailing ground!

      Can you reef a Sprit rig? Does its shortness help keep it stable in higher winds. Looks like a great sail! Jealous!

    • @GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496
      @GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496 6 місяців тому

      @@Brackcycle The low centre of effort on the Roger Crawford Melonseed skiff combined with the sail’s ability to spill wind in high gusts helps to keep the boat stable in heavy air. The sail doesn’t have reef points. Apart from reef points, the other traditional way to reduce sail area is to “scandalize” the sail by removing the sprit and securing the peak of the sail to the mast with the pennant. This is sometimes done on large sprit rigged boats but is not practical while underway on a little skiff.

    I'm an amateur boat builder from Florida, but I'm thinking of moving to Canada. One thing I've thought about, is that if you capsize that far north, hypothermia must set in really quickly. Is this an issue?

      Not a problem in the summer near Montreal but for early spring or late fall sailing I wear a dry suit.
