3 things I wish I knew before becoming a pro makeup artist
I can't see anyone other than Cynthia for this role. They considered lady gaga and I don't think she would've brought every single detail that Cynthia did for this role. The role was given to the most talented person on the roster. I am elated young black children get to dress up and dance around their bedrooms singing Cynthia's part's at the top of their lungs.
Thank you so much for this post! I have watched the movie too many times and love it so much. As a black woman, I saw a lot of things that I think many people missed, but you have addressed much of it. Didn't intend to become "paragraph woman!" lol Clearly, I've had a lot of thoughts! Whenever a black person plays a role that traditionally has been held by others, that adds different layers to how the character is seen. Years ago, a famous Chicago theater company colorblind cast a play. One ensemble member was a black woman, and there were so many extra nuances to everything that she did and said. I notice the same thing here with Cynthia Erivo's portrayal. She is such an excellent actor, and her singing is out of this world! So many of her facial expressions were so subtle but also so loud. The pain of her father's rejection of her - he snapped at her, while he doted on and praised Nessa. She was being mocked and reviled solely because she was green, while Nessa, who was in a wheelchair, was almost treated like the norm. The subtle "DUH!" smirk she gave Galinda when the former announced that she was green, followed by the burn "...with skills you do not have..." (Ouch!) She had that "Girl, are you kidding me?" look when Galinda showed her the little corner of the room that she had put aside for her. I thought she lowkey appreciated - like a touché - Galinda's "the artichoke is steamed" comment because of the very subtle half-smile that she gave, as if to say "Okay, that was a good one," in contrast to more mean-spirited things like the crowds recoiling from her so vehemently (which I think was so over the top - and weird since even black folks were doing it!) The burdened shame she showed when sharing her guilt that it was "her fault" that Nessa was disabled. Because of her own discomfort, Galinda moved on quickly after saying, "That might be your secret, but that doesn't make it true", and deflected to the dawning day. During the cafeteria scene, when everyone ganged up on Elphaba, she acted as if it really didn't bother her, but she had developed thick skin as a defense mechanism because she had been treated as an outsider not worthy of inclusion throughout her life. Galinda eventually saw through that. Her bonding with Dr. Dillamond was very touching, and I wish they had shown some brief examples of her affinity with animals - we really didn't see much after Dulcibear raised her. With her and Fiyero, I thought she was actually intrigued by him - her "Hmpf"-ing and eye rolls, yet she stayed fixated on him in "the book place". And when she felt the need to leave during the dance number, it doesn't seem she went that far away. Galinda tended to do certain "overbearing white girl" things like giving Elphie the nickname, and deciding that's what she would call her without getting explicit consent. The same about making Elphaba her new "project". Elphaba gave her the "What is you doing?" expression when Galinda got in her face before launching into "Popular". All these hit different because of the casting. Galinda also cracked me up with her “white girl scream” and the “Toss toss” throughout! One of the most powerful scenes was at the Ozdust Ballroom. Nessa chose to just be embarrassed after the crowd teased Elphaba relentlessly, even though Elphaba had interceded on her behalf all her life. When Galinda saw the result of setting up Elphaba for ridicule, she defied her friends who told her to stop. When she approached Elphaba on the dance floor, that was the second time Elphaba had backed away from Galinda that day, figuring that her goal was to further humiliate her. But she was able, in her vulnerable state, to ultimately recognize that Galinda was becoming an ally, in spite of the ridicule she could get - why was she, the popular one, making such a public statement? It was so moving, even though it was like a “white Savior” moment. But then Galinda, responding to her own discomfort, dragged Elphaba out of there very quickly. It had to be a gut punch when Elphaba realized that Madame Morrible, who had become a mother figure for her, used her, turned on her, and demonized her publicly - after Elphaba believed they had a genuine connection. She had probably yearned for that since her mother passed away when she was so young, and she was otherwise shunned. So she found herself all alone. And Glinda was not in the same head space with her, asking her to compromise after she had firmly said no to working with the Wizard once she learned the truth about him. For so much of her life, Elphaba sought affirmation from the Wizard, so it had to be heartbreaking to learn he was a fraud. The same when Madame Morrible ordered Glinda to get Elphaba back in line. Her defiance was a slap in the face of authority and plays out more deeply with her as the outsider who happens to be green but is played by a black woman! Cynthia has said that she started wearing long nails when she was 16, but they also paid homage to Margaret Hamilton since she had seen a photo of her with claws. That horrid poster in Munchkinland was a terrible caricature, and the Munchkins’ celebration was chilling - no desire to mourn a human being, even after hearing her backstory. Burning her in effigy. That overhead shot where the dancers looked like demonic whirling dervishes. It was also chilling to hear the guards' shout at the end of "Defying Gravity" change from "Get her!" (from the play) to "Kill her!" - that overreacting fear of someone bucking the system. It's not enough to just capture her; she had to be eliminated. I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz, saw the OBC of The Wiz when I was in college, and absolutely detested the Motown movie. I have neither seen Wicked nor read the books, and initially, I had no interest in seeing it or the movie. But I am on UA-cam a lot, and content kept popping up, so I started reading it. Now I am obsessed! God bless you guys, and Happy New Year! Gonna watch my streaming edition now!
as a non black person i was brought to tears by your trailer reaction months ago when i watched it and i recently remembered it and i had to find u again to listen to your perspective now that the movie is out 💚(also yes ! madam morribles speech was chilling to me as well) overall the movie is a masterpiece and i hope cynthia has an oscar coming her way soon !!
Beautiful place your staying, and for me all of my holidays been solo and I’m so comfortable with that 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you! Has the holidays always been a solo one for you as an adult? Do you have childhood holiday traditions you still hold on to?
I would love a video on how you tour, and what happens when you move into a city with tour, load in and load outs and how you look for housing and how you get used to your new surroundings
This is awesome!!! Thank you for watching! I would love to show yall the ins and outs!
Loved hearing your perspective. It was an absolutely brilliant film, and although Cynthia and Ariana killed it; Cynthia really SHOOK me with how much emotion she was able put into this role. The dance scene had me weeping. I left the theater saying “just throw them damn awards at her, she better win EVERY AWARD!”. 😂
Every award!!!!!! Lol
Cynthia insisting on microbraids is SO profound
Very profound!
This reaction made me cry. The fact that a Queer Black Woman is playing this role really does just make it so much more special! ❤
Hey Tish, I know I’m sooo late to the party, but loved your reaction!! I’m a 53 year old white British guy who had his first ever experience of Wicked last night at the cinema with my eldest daughter and had tingles all the way through, and your video gave me tingles like you were having too, I also couldn’t work out why but the film hit me emotionally, I have always been a bit of an outcast/ different, and having 2 daughters means I love anything to do with girls and women being brave enough to be who they are and stay true to themselves despite what the world thinks or says about them because they are threatened by their strength and honest forthrightness, and I think you must have had a much bigger and more powerful connection as a black woman? Whatever thank you for helping recapture a little of what I felt last night at the movies and merry Christmas from England 🎄💚😚
Merry Christmas!! Thank you for this message. Thank you for rooting for us as women! This movie is groundbreaking
I just finished my third three hour viewing and I am drinking this up. The first scene where they dance in front of each other I hardly breathed. It is all so wonderful and all the work everyone put out was top dollar. Congratulations everyone!
The movie was absolutely perfect and everything was done beautifully! I cried throughout the entire thing. 😂. Going for a 3rd time soon.
Being a petite, gay man (now in my 50's) that was always bullied growing up, I have always related to this musical. I loved it the first time I saw it over 10 years ago and the numerous times I saw it over the years. This movie though, touched so many parts of me that the musical didn't penetrate. Elphaba's difference played on a part of me that was so strong, but then Glinda's animosity turned friend brought me to tears. There was a true love that no one could deny which made me think of the few friends I had that loved me the way that I was/am. T
this reaction just made my week
Thank you for watching friend!
I cried
girl, you're doing the most..its a movie trailer, get over it
Thanks for watching! 🫶🏾
Just coming back to this after seeing the movie for the second time to say this was_everything_ I hoped it would be and Cynthia Erivo absolutely _killed_ this role. All the haters can pound sand.
Everyone forgets the dialogue between Galindo and Fiyero right before the dace scene. Galinda Truly sees through the facades Elphaba puts up and that’s why she puts her reputation on the line for the person she Really cares about.
Ur reaction is so special i love u
I worked Nov 6-Dec 1st merch in seattle WA for Wicked! Sold out every show! And having the movie premiering at the same time definitely helped. I am not sure if I got to meet you during the thanksgiving eve dinner, but I just want to say Thank U, for your work and spirit ❤❤
Having now seen the movie, I have to say Cynthia playing Elphaba was such a profound choice. You actually entirely believe her portrayal as an outcast in a way that just doesn’t wash with others who have played the role on stage. This movie is very very special and has a whole new layer of depth due to the casting choices. I absolutely loved it. Ariana is so funny. Cynthia is mind blowing. You cannot take your eyes off her. ❤
Happy I saw this thumbnail by coincidence. Made me cry, even as a white dude. This was so touching
Awwwww. It’s that powerful. I was shocked I started crying like this 😭
you have me bawling alongside you hahaha
😂😭😂😭 I was so mad I started crying 😭😂
This year, especially this past month I have been denying God and His existence because of constant mistreatment, especially from "Christians". I grew tired of being devoted. Slowly my curiosity in the Bible is growing, but I am also very hesitant.
Thank you for sharing this friend. My email is always open if you want to pray or just talk. Tish@tishferguson.com. I been there and I understand totally!
I cant imagine anyone else playing Elphie other than Cynthia. I cried throughout the whole movie i will lose my Shiz if she doesnt win an Oscar for her performance.
I will lose my shiz as well!!!! 😭😭🫶🏾💚
3:11 I think that’s what made everything hit SO HARD for me. As the weird young black girl that was made fun of a lot, she reminded me a lot of myself and I cried multiple times during the movie.
Same!!!!!!!! I’m itching to see it again because it was like therapy
Elphba represents every kid that felt less than or different, or bullied. Cynthia represented the humanity in that character. Defying gravity is her song now.
It’s hers!!!!
After watching with my mother, we discussed how Elphaba represented the Spirit filled and Christ-driven believer, with Glinda being a perfect symbol of the white-washed tombs Christians, who delight in displays of righteousness but aren't filled with anything good.
This is a great discussion!
Excuse me! The way you just slid past what you do… how amazing! I think it’s really cool you do the painting!
😭😂 I be thinking no one really cares. Lol
Saw it last night. It was amazing….. way above expectations, and my expectations were high. ❤
Same! My expectations were soooooo high!
Thinking this is a representation of the African struggle is a mistake. Elphaba doubles down in being wicked and isn’t a redeemable character… i doubt that’s who you want representing black women… her character shows that even the purest intentions can become wicked when the choose evil things despite being the initial force for exposing lies
Thanks for sharing. I don’t agree with this outlook but that’s the beauty of art. It’s all apart of our own interpretation. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏾🫶🏾
@TishFergusonBeauty that’s fine but that’s literally how the book was created and the movie went in that direction. There’s an interview with cynthia explaining how they wanted to portray Elphaba. Now that’s not to say Cynthia didn’t tap into her own personal struggles and have that bring Elphaba to life that i believe is valid but completely separate from what the overall theme is of the story which (pun intended) is exploring ‘what is wickedness?.’
Forget the book or part 2 because I didn't read the book or see the musical. How is doubling down for morality and wanting to protect the subjugated and standing on your values wicked?
@denisenoles3159 those aren’t wicked. But she accepted the title wicked it’s the whole precursor of defying gravity. But we can safely assume that due to her character being the wicked witch where she is clearly evil despite the wizard and Glindas shortcomings… that’s what makes wicked so damn good. You have ppl who seem genuinely good to the core but get coerced to do wicked things allowing themselves to become wicked. This is why i sympathize with those that see Elphaba as just a victim because that is true but her actions which we have yet to see in the movie will solidify her as the wicked witch.
@Superyan100 Thank you for your response but people who are clearly evil do not have the character traits that I described. She refused to be manipulated for someone's personal gain and at the expense of others but you are standing on the premise that she is clearly evil but you did not say what evil she did. What was the evil? Accepting a title does not mean that is who you are. Anyway, I will leave it at that, and we can agree to disagree on this one. 🙂
I think it was so important that Elphaba be black. It adds so much more weight to the message. Seeing an actor who has experienced similar things that the character has experienced is special. I’m gay and grew up in the church and have diagnosed bipolar and ptsd because of it. My entire life I’ve felt silenced and isolated by just existing. I sat in the movie theater for 10 minutes just crying. This is important.
Thats right she was mean, glenda was a mean witch and all bout her.
Why It Gotta Be Black?”
Thanks for watching
Girl when I tell you I was in shambles in that theatre like full on ugly crying with tissues everywhere 😂
Girl same!!!!!!! Weepinnnnng 😭😂
I've been to see it 3 times and each time you end up seeing so much more that you missed before. Just watched a few interviews with Cynthia where she mentioned that all the hair, makeup, nails etc were her choices. They asked her specifically what she wanted and they listened. I love that!
It’s so amazing that she had the confidence to make the choices!!!! This industry doesn’t always empower us to do so. She is opening doors for other actors!
@@TishFergusonBeauty This was one that showed up today for me. I love my algorithm on here is giving me more Wicked content. Hope the link works. ua-cam.com/users/shortswo4iGNM65ls?si=128Cm6sUQBbHQ_ic
Thanks to all the black people that have endured being first. When we are in these positions we have to remember we are making a difference, even if we don't feel like we do.
To my Christian family I am the Wicked one for being Gay.. The Emerald City to me was the church. A lovely place to be at first but very manipulative and close minded. “If I’m flying solo, at least I’m flying free…” I felt it in my bones when she sang this.
@@jonathanalfred446 It was the same for me. I did a video about Defying Gravity has been holding space for us, not the other way around, for that exact reason
I think it’s a good change for the casting of Elphaba. I just watched the movie and I was amazed at how she portrayed the character and her singing voice is amazing. I hope you enjoy the movie because I know I did.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie!!!!!!
You should React To Into the storm ft Jessica Vosk
I will keep it real. I only went because i had seen the play years ago, and i felt i needed to support cynthia. I wasn't sure this movie was gonna hit, and honestly, the only thing i remembered from the play was For Good and Defying Gravity 😩😩 It was a whole new experience seeing it. And i found incoulsnt help but see things as a black woman. Sonthat made her performance more special. thx for the details. ❤❤❤ Side not, and yeah, it's gonna come off shady. I love Cynthias' performance of Defying Gravity better. No giant breaths every between the high parts. IYKYK

1st time watching 🤣🤣😍😍😍😍
🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 thanks for watching
What an absolutely beautiful reaction. ❤
🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 it got me right in the heart lol
What I didn’t get what was the wizard wanted to silence the animals until it’s explained by Dr Dillamonds about the great drought and how oz was nearly destroyed so they blamed the animals and to bring folks together is to give them a good enemy. The animals voice was their strength so silencing them is taking their right to stand up for what’s right away and he can control them easily such as the monkeys. Elphaba has already been told to be silent by her father and her being this revolutionary is very impactful for a community that is misunderstood
But she's not black, she's green.
Thanks for watching
I know this video is really old - but I wanted to say that I had just kind of shrugged at the fact they cast a black woman in this role. I didn't really see that it mattered too much (after all the character is green - why would it matter if the actress playing her was black, white, asian). Because I'm an idiot and it didn't really click with me until watching this (before I've seen the movie) that it's actually made BETTER by casting a black woman.
This is sooooooo honest! Thank you. I’m blown away by this comment. Thank you for talking the time to do so!
After the 2024 Election, I NEEDED Cynthia Erivo and this song!!!! Can't wait to see it. THANKS Tish!!!

My favorite moment in the movie is in the small sequence of defying gravity we see her falling and the many voices of those who mocked her and how it impacted her and as she falls sees her young self reach out to her as she takes on the mantle of being the leader to defy the system and the wizard. Cynthia needs awards for portraying Elphaba
She needs so many awards!!!!! This was also directed beautifully to set it apart from the stage play. I’m in awe
