Official Marketing And Technology Demo (1983) | Commodore Plus/4
Official Pre-Release Marketing And Technology Demo (1983)
Commodore Plus/4
While doing some research, I came across a fascinating and very early demo for the Commodore Plus/4. I’ll be showing it to you shortly, running on real hardware.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the history. The Commodore Plus/4 was released in June 1984 as a follow-up to the legendary Commodore 64. It was aimed at home users, students, and small businesses, with an initial price of $299.
Now, here’s what makes this demo remarkable: it was partly created in November 1983-seven months before the Plus/4 officially launched. Back then, the system was still in development and was even shown at the January 1984 CES in Las Vegas as a prototype called the "Commodore 444."
This demo could very well be one of the first ever made for the Plus/4. It’s even possible that it was part of the presentation at CES that year, helping to introduce the system to the world.
So, let’s take a step back in time and enjoy this beautifully crafted demo together!

Today we are going to do a speed comparison between two Floppy-drive simulators for the Commodore Plus/4: The PI1541-III which simulates a 1541 and the so-called TCBM2SD parallel drive, which simulates the 1551 floppy drive. To get an idea of the loading speeds, i will load a sequence of prerendered animation frames, which shows a rotating Tie-fighter. The frames are pre-rendered with my selfwr...

Very nice demo, thanks to Goldcraft who pulled this off. I added some ideas and soundeffects
Wow, amazing! Nice work converting to Scratch :) Happy New Year George!
Happy new Year, Josip! Yes was a nice project. Amazing effect with such little code.
Very nice carol and graphics :) Merry Christmas George!

Atari Jaguar Version: ua-cam.com/video/TPvbdtYqjSg/v-deo.html
very nice! 🙂 Though visibly there is no gravitation between two shapes, they live their own lives. It would make the WHOLE thing much more complex
This is made with a few lines of code..fits on a Plus/4 page..Amazing, isn't it?
🎉 very nice 🎉
Thank you. You were my inspiration. My son also did the conversion to Scratch (with a little help from me)
@ you’re welcome ☺️ and I hope you have a good day
Great video! I hope you can develop or find an assembly language program to load the frames even faster!
Great video... again! thank you for this test, it is very original! Cheers!
@@CyberhugTechnologies Thank you very much for the nice words

Hi, tcbm2sd author here. I see that there is a need for a resident fastloader, one that patches BASIC LOAD command. Could you share the disk image of the animation with me for testing? The email is on the top of the pcb :)
Hello, thank you for watching and for this great device. I send you the images. Maybe you can optimize a few thing for this application.
Didn't know about that new peripheral TCBM2SD, thanks for the info and the video.. I guess there's one more item in the list to build or buy.
Thank you for the nice comment! The T stands for TED btw
is there no basic compiler for plus4?
Many... i haven't tried myself yet but a comoiler speed up things for sure..but assembly is the way to go, and to solve the task we need a kind of pre-loadingd/buffering..Main topic of the video though, was to demonstrate the differences of the loading speeds..i used the projects as a vehicle to make things more interesting, sinc it was lying around. But maybe for the future. An interesting topic how to try to make a full screen animation.
Tried to use exomizer for the CPC. Damn it was hard to decompress a file.
i remember to struggle too
Dann sind die Weihnachtsferien also mit Assembler lernen belegt ?! :-)
Habe es damals in Assembler geschrieben, lief aber nicht richtig..
Excellent, I had a lot of fun watching that. We didn't really have access to much computers during my initial school years, but when we finally did - Logo was one of the things they taught us. Don't think the teacher understood much of the program beyond feeding us listings, but I had fun playing around with it on the old 286 computers that they had in a lab. Had a Pentium at home so it wasn't completely up to date 😅
Thank you for the nice words! Great story. At least you alsi enjoyed retro-computing from the beginning in school :) I think that Logo is a great language for learning and a slow, simple computer is also perfect for the start :)
I still use turtle graphics on my pi. Easy to understand.
:0
I had Logo for the C64. It was a fun, intuitive way for a kid to create graphics on a C64, whose graphics commands were otherwise kinda obfuscated behind pokes.
Its a port form the C64 version. The Plus/4 has a better Basic with graphic commands, but its Basic lacks the turle-graphics. Logo is a great enhancement.
Fascinating, as always... Still need to try the samples you sent!
Thanks for the good words! I am curious about your results with the samples
The Commodore Plus/4 was what the Commodore 64 should have been!
"And this, dear children, is how games as old as your teacher look like" :)
@@GeorgMierau Which still hold up with the best PS5 games :)))
Man your system renderer is faster than my net
Yes its breaks records..:)
Sweet! The language taught at schools of our childhood: great video sir
@@antonjoly9601 Merci beaucoup, Monsieur! You are my inspiration...
I always thought logo would have been a perfect language for those Arduino robots
Its a very cool language..still holds up
@GeorgesChannel last I heard they still use it in Greek schools..
A lucky find… well done!
@@jamesdecross1035 Thank you for the nice words!
Sehr schönes Video. Toller Zustand nach so vielen Jahren. Was fehlt Ihnen denn noch in Ihrer 264 Sammlung?
Danke für die netten Worte! Da sind noch einige Dinge die mir fehlen..:)
Very nice! 👏
Oh vielen Dank! Thank you very much!
Lol, I think the low number of iterations you do in your code is responsible that anything at all shows up. Try with 1000000.
I remember i had to reduce it for the resolution of the plus/4 :)
@@GeorgesChannel I think this fractal diverges and you avoid the issue by clipping the pixels :) The others, if you look closely, converge.
cool fractal, but there must have been some kind of mistake, I still can't reproduce.
Can't reproduce it either on the online generator! But i verified the code in Commodore Basic and c#!
where can I get 1.25?
What do you mean with 1.25?
Hi there George love your Channel can you please tell me where you purchased your PI1541-III.Cheers Kurt Australia
Hi Kurt! Thank you for the good words! I buoght it from ebay. Go to the link in the description of the Plus/4 forum, where i name the seller. The Items are sold out at the moment. I don't want to advertise the seller here. You also can go to PCB Way and order the parts and bult one for yourself. All links are in the description.
@@GeorgesChannel Hi George thank you very much for providing the information as i am very interested in getting one.Cheers Kurt
As usual, excellent work George. Cheers 🍻 Pete.
Thank you for the nice words, Pete. I struggled this time to get the result i wanted.
Beautiful... and adequate music
Thank you Anton!
Beautifully made. Congrats!
Thank you! Was struggling for hours getting this to work somehow.
nice fractal, but the source code can't be right. You commented function 1 and 3 with REMs, yet you still select these functions.
If these lines are commented out, every value is zero then. Arrays have per default a length of 10. I found these fractals with a random generator.
@@GeorgesChannel ok, I still can't replicate the results with an online Barnsley fern generator.
@@TreeOfWisdom2 give me the link to the generator. The bernsley fern has a fixed probability when its uses the 4 formulas. I also change the probabilities.
I tried to verify this with an online barnsley fern generator, but it doesn't work. Help?
@TreeOfWisdom2 Analyse the parameters and the probabilities in the code..i am sure i made some changes..post the link of the generator if yoi want, i will check later
Very geil 👏
It's incredible, but I made a clone of Asteroids for ms-dos that has many things in common with this game. Of course this one is much more advanced, but it still is a funny coincidence.
Is the game somewhere online? I love vector games...maybe i make also a review if i like it
I have so many great memories of gaming on my plus 4 and this compilation made it seem like yesterday. thank you for making such an enjoyable video 👏🕹
You are welcome. I am very happy you enjoyed the video.
