Older adventure games didn't really have a sense of what kind of puzzles or paths forward were fair or reasonable for a player to figure out. They'd figure out how to iron out the design and make the intended path less cryptic as the gaming medium got older. But it's the main reason why I think A Link to the Past aged really poorly, despite having so much awesome stuff.

Tips for after Hyrule Castle: Get as many bottles as you can, and fill them with either fairies or potions. The latter half of the game is f*cking brutal. Don't feel bad about using a guide either, you'll probably need it.

In my first time playing A Link To The Past, I could not for the life of me find where the Book of Mudora was, even WITH a guide. All the guides said it was in Kakariko Village, and the book is in a house directly BELOW Kakariko Village. F*cking IGN, I swear.
