Pinball machine plasma display repair on the cheap

Do not throw out your Ball or Stern displays if they are missing digits, segments or a plain burned! If they show life chances are we can repair them... for cheap! Follow along as I bring a few back to perfect working condition.

Pinball Machine Leg Straightening

Lets use a truck, a 2x6 and an adjustable wrench to straighten out pinball machine legs.... on the very cheap. Lets also learn how to remove frozen leg levellers with little effort and no greasy penetrating fluid! Good for Bally, Stern, Gotlieb, Wico, Playmatic, Chicago Coin or any other brand with steel legs. Short and sweet video!
Display or Diode? Whats popping the fuse on a Bally pinball power supply?

Lets diagnose a problem with a power supply. The fuse went pop in a very dramatic fashion when I plugged in the display. So is it the power supply or the display thats the culprit? Lets find out!

Pinball machine computer MPU Repair. - Chip and Socket replacement

Lets take a neglected, scrap pile picked MPU for a Bally Future Spa and get it to work like it did when it was new.... for another game! This is a subscriber requested video and a challenging one to boot! Get it? Boot! The skill set you llearn will be applicable to any device that requires chip removal and socketing so expands beyond the reach of pinball.

Refurbish pinball side rails to like new conditions on the cheap. No fancy tools required!

This is a very economical way to recondition side rails to like new minty condition! Works on other stainless steel surfaces as well. Good for any brand of pinball machine like Bally, Stern, Williams, Gottlieb etc. Yes i could by a fancy re-graining tool for $300 but where is the fun in that?
High end pinball playfield restoration direct to wood printing

Pinball playfied restoration - lets go direct to wood and restore a playfield by printing directly on it and by pass a hard top , overlay or colour by Sharpies! This was a fun project that i did for my own use only.

Let's make a coil with parts you may have lying around that will same you some cash with very little effort. Works for any brand including Bally, Stern, Gottlieb and all the rest. This is a perfect hack to get your machine up and running on the cheap.

what type of printer are you using
@@godj8146 it’s a UV cured flat bed printer at a print shop.
How do you calibrate your monitor so that what you see on screen matches what is printed?
@@laurencecoxon9760 when you input the canvas size it prints to that specification. Photoshop also has a print size view that gives you the actual print size

Hi Google Way Back Machine and paste this url in the search bar. stevekulpa.net/pinball/bally_disp6.htm might take some fiddling around with dates but you should be able to dig it up
Great video..but please..please invest in a camera mount for your desk. They are really cheap. So hard to watch when you just sit the camera on the table.
Just wanted to say that you have many great and straight to the point videos. The techniques themselves arent that hard imo but how would one know from thin air how to refurbish brushed metal.😀

I picked up a Rockwell JawHorse a couple years ago to clamp onto things like this. I find all kinds of use for it like clamping a chainsaw, weed easter in it to work on the engine or long pieces of material. It adjust quickly to size and clamps pretty tight using leverage and soft jaws. Folds up and rolls into the back of the garage.

The Watchdog circuit for pinball games is suppose to RESET & Shut the game OFF if any solenoid coil is locked on or shorted out during first turning on Power up sequence?
Those boards are terrible quality.

Been watching your videos and my hind brain kept whispering 'too new' to me about the restoration. Which didn't make sense since that is what you were trying to achieve. Finally occurred to me that the white looks too white. I don't think that they had the ability to produce paint jobs that were that white. either because white was too expensive when u went that white or it was an ascetic choice in general. I think instead that they used a more yellowish white for large paint areas and saved the - white i will call - ultra white parts, for smaller areas or trim that they wanted to stand out. At lest this is according to my memory of long years hanging out at the arcades, lol.

Either Remove or Add C22 and R28 to convert the sound boards, but what does C22 and R28 do to the sound audio? I'm guessing it changes & alters the pulse width?

At 1:50 you have your probe at "spot 38". What's that? It looks like it's touching pins 39 and 40 of U10. Please advise.

I repaired a lot of arcade boards over the years with good results, but with pinball boards I can't repair a board without loosing some solder pads. They are always the ones without a trace so it's not a big deal, but I don't like the looks of it.
Adding new solder before removing the old is the best strategy that helps alleviate that issue but a little always lifts.
Bally had boards being made by a ton of different places. Some had very good traces, some had traces that will evaporate if you look at them funny.
Why on Earth did they put that overlay on... it's completely different from the fantastic original art.
They used to change the artwork and the back gloss and make it look like a different game. That way it looks fresh in the customers mind!
