Launching My Wharram Tiki 21 Catamaran for the First Time - SV Primitiva EP. 8
Переглядів 2,7 тис.28 днів тому
I finally launch my Wharram Tiki 21 cat after about 5 years since I started building. Although I didn't get much actual sailing in, I couldn't have asked for a better trial run. Conditions were ideal for testing all my systems without pushing the boat too hard. As I gain confidence, I'll be putting her through her paces and expanding the scope of my trips. Stay tuned as the adventure continues!...

    Excellent launch day and friends and familly day .. When the wind moves across hills and cliffs ..you will get dirty unstable air.. Even at sea a long way off islands and headlands have a noticible effect. Get some of the round portable solar powered lights ..to light up your interior at night and deck for moving arround. They are usually just push to switch on. The other addition is no seeum mesh On opening hatches and vents .. its the only way to avoid getting bitten and ending up with something like dengui fever etc.. as they are spreading N fast.

    You're subjecting the carabiner at the bottom of the forestay to lateral forces it's simply not designed for. and it will be dramatically weaker than you need. A plain stainless ring would give much better distribution of the loads.

    She's looking trim and ship-shape, and I'm hoping to see her getting wet very soon! Your trailer looks a bit "flimsy" to me. 06:34 Is each hull supported only by the 2 extendable box sections? It may be camera fore-shortening effect, but those box-section beams seem to be flexed under the weight, even with the trailer stationary. I hope road bumps, or even pot-holes, don't start the boat springing up and down, or bending those beams.

    • @svprimitiva
      @svprimitiva Місяць тому

      The extension sections are only cantilevered out like that when launching the boat. Otherwise the weight of the hulls rest on the actually trailer frame and is quite sturdy. It does have some flex when it’s extended out but should be fine just to back down the boat ramp. Time and experience will tell! Thanks so much for watching an commenting!

    You're slowly getting the idea. Glad you figured out my sidestay suggestion. The next thing I'll stress is the ginpole is not an Extra. It's ALSO either a Boom, or a spinnaker/ jib Pole, and only needs to be a 6ft , 1 " aluminium pole with a cleat at each end. It will also remove the need for such strong pulley gear, as the extra leverage provided by the pole solves the problem Unless you never plan on sailing down wind, you are going to find the pole super handy, especially if you make it sturdy enough to use as a boat hook for picking up stuff from the water, and pushing off from wharves and rocks. I forget if you said anything about an anchor. Theoretically they are mandatory for most boats. Ideally the anchor rope should run through the centre of the Bow Bridle to avoid off centre drag. The Anchor is your Brakes, and together with a suitable Tow Rope for Rescue boats, should be on your Checklist of essential gear for every trip. I wouldn't promote these things unless I had learned them all by years of experience. All the best on your maiden voyage.

    • @michaelingram2890
      @michaelingram2890 Місяць тому

      If you need a gin pole to raise a 40 pound mast, then you should hit the gym. The 21 mast is not much heavier if at all than a beach cat mast. Anchoring is for newbs! You're absolutely right that it is NOT intuitive AT ALL to have an anchor on a sailboat that you just spent years and over ten thousand dollars building. A good sailor will heave to when stopping the boat for anything from sexual encounters to bathroom breaks and tie off to channel marks when sleeping for the night so that other boats can see him and he can be close to help if needed. You don't even need to waste electrical power running an anchor light if the channel mark is lighted. Win Win! The skipper of Primitiva is so lucky to have us for help, amirite?!

    • @dnomyarnostaw
      @dnomyarnostaw Місяць тому

      @michaelingram2890 The gin pole is more a convenience as well as an accessory, as well as removing the need to have such a heavy block and tackle. When the mast is horizontal, there is a lot more leverage needed. You also can't assume you won't have another crew member with less upper body strength to help, or that you will be fit enough at the end of sail session to muscle it. I have no idea why you said anchoring is for newbs. There are a dozen emergencies, like no wind and you drifting into a busy boat lane, rocky Point or concrete jetty as you struggle to get the motor started. I don't know what area you live in, but tying up to any navigation item is not only illegal in civilised areas, it's usually fraught with sharp barnacles or similar.

    • @michaelingram2890
      @michaelingram2890 Місяць тому

      @@dnomyarnostaw He is using the mainsheet for his "heavy block and tackle". It's on the boat either way. I've never seen a gin pole used at a beach cat regatta ever, even with the Inter 20's. It sounds like you have been rescued and drifted into a lot of rocks. Anchors are for P***ies. Learn to sail, bro.

    • @dnomyarnostaw
      @dnomyarnostaw Місяць тому

      @michaelingram2890 You sound like a tough off the beach racer, who only goes out when at least 15 knots of wind is expected for your little 3 hour circuit. You've never been caught in a heavy tide run out to sea where neither the motor or low wind could stop a trip to the open ocean , or collision with a headland. There is a difference between "around the can rodeos" with rescue boat officials on hand, versus extensive coastal exploration on your own. Maybe you'll mature to do some real sailing.

    • @michaelingram2890
      @michaelingram2890 Місяць тому

      @@dnomyarnostaw You can't even tell this is all tongue in cheek. Denser than lead! Now you're projecting because your feelings are hurt. The fact that you suggested a Macgregor product for anything says it all. Primitiva is a beautiful boat, and Scott is doing an excellent job. It's reasonable to assume that he could muster the idea of having an anchor onboard without help from the Mac26 manual. P.S. There are no "ropes" or "pulleys" on a sailboat, genius. Will I see you at the Macinac this year?

    I never knew about the sail zipper. After transporting my catamaran and several other homemade multi hull arrangements, I learned that making an "X" with the straps in the front, then another one in back to keep the load centered and pulled down. Not sure if it applies to your setup. My cat wanted to "shimmy'" but it has a flat bottom. You will find out how it wants to wiggle loose if it wants to. Less than 2 hours setup is quick. Mine was 3, but I'll be quicker as I get it down better. Sails look awesome!

    It looks beautiful! I wouldn't bother repairing the old sail, wait and see if you will even use it, and if you do, get a new one. I would, however, change the location of the plug for the trailer tail lights. If you put the plug near the wench (and add a longer wire to the lights) the plug won't be submerged when you splash the boat.

    Excellent progress, and good choices on the design improvements, especially the trampoline. Heavy rope netting is very hard on bare skin, so don't be too keen on removing finer meshes. I see you still haven't mastered the gin pole with forestay pulley for mast up/down. 🙂 Well worth the practice prior to confined launch areas, where ladders may be in short supply :-) Edit. PS - how did you get on for insurance for the whole setup ? Also, just make a little T piece from 2x4 wood, say 3 ft x 1 ft , cover it in old carpet, and then you can drop the short arm of the T into the gap between the hulls for anti-rubbing and it will sit securely behind those deck fittings. PPS - In any trip, a checklist is a great idea. Like a plane flight prep. Worst case you arrive at the launch place with missing ropes, or end up in the ocean with only 1 flipper and no face mask, towels, change of dry clothes etc. Also, a first aid kit, safety gear like in date flares, flotation vest, spares for things that you might drop in the water or break, waterproof cover for your charged mobile phone, even an old spare mobile phone before you get your marine radio. Tow rope, don't forget a tow rope.
