The reasons why students need to nap more
I am a partial to a nap pretty often, and like my last video where I delved into whether it's actually a benefit so as to justify myself being useless, I did it again! I'll share some studies and bits and bobs that point towards short and long term benefits of napping as a student. Links to the studies I mention can be found below x

Can playing chess make you smarter?

I have sold my soul to the overlords of chess over the past few years and have gone from being complete trash to only slight trash at the game. People always say that you have to be intelligent to play the game, although when they hear I play it begin to question that assertion rather quickly. In this video I share everything I found and my thoughts on whether playing chess really does make you...

    Chess is really a magical game it makes you open minded, able to memorize more, have more attention and willpower, more critical thinking, increases self awareness and boosts planning skills my average iq at start of 2023 when chess was introduced to me was 127 before playing chess and now after playing for a long time and reaching 1800 my iq is around 134 and highest score i got was 138 when i was in a perfect mental state

      Who the heck takes multiple professional IQ tests? These things cost up to Hundreds of Dollars per Test and take 4 hours to do at max concentration and also usually about a Year to schedule... The fact that you are talking about them like with high scores makes me theorize that you don't actually take real IQ tests but some Internet fake stuff. Just so you know. If it's anywhere on the Internet it's entirely fake. That being said even if you do take multiple real ones (for whatever weird reason) it can fluctuate quite a bit. It's normal that your IQ changes. To make out a correlation with Chess based on that, disregarding every thing else in your Life + your Mental development (as you are likely young I imagine) is quite useless. Difference between Correlation and Causality. You cannot just assume it's chess cuz you want to.

      @@LewisSeal yes, of course, it is very important that we treat chess only and only as a hobby and not to spend too much valuable time on it. Reaching an IM or GM level is neither possible nor justifiable as most GMs struggle to make enough money from chess to buy bread! Of course, if we are in the top 50 chess players in the world we can win enough prizes from tournaments to survive but reaching top 50 is impossible unless we start chess from the age of 5 and practice hours everyday with regular good coaching and enough number of regular tournaments!

    In my Opinion it doesn't, I know it might improve some of your iq and intelligence but not so much cause after a time you start to study the game and just memorize the game and techniques and in that phase it no longer challanges your brain it becomes much easier for you. So just mastering and memorizing a game doesn't Specially increase your intelligence in a highly number. What chess does other sports does too chess is not different or extra benefiting from other sports. For example football also recquires hardwork, dedication, clear thinking, focus mental tactics, the ability to hold pressure, makes your nerves stronger etc.

    • @LewisSeal
      @LewisSeal 27 днів тому

      Yeah sauce I think you're right in saying that the memorisation is taking over, that's what some of the top players are even saying banging on about the game isn't what it used to be- game's gone. That being said I do think it's telling that if you can utilise that time when someone is new to the game like they did when the students did from the study, then they haven't got to the stage when they're memorising everything but still trying to solve it all

    • @eliasvonbrille
      @eliasvonbrille 26 днів тому

      @@LewisSeal Well even "solving" is almost exclusively pattern recognition. It makes no difference as far as I am aware if you have specifically memorized the Move or memorized the concept by seeing it a hundred times. And there is no move possible in chess which you wouldn't find after having seen the concept a hundred times. So where is the Open space to get Intelligence into this? I don't see it.

      @LewisSeal 5 місяців тому

      I'm happy to hear it's made some sort of an impact! In terms of balancing everything, I think the point I'm making with time allocation is to not... balance everything. Some subjects you will find easier than others, even if not subjects there will at least be certain modules that you're much better at. As a result you should be able to dedicate more of your time to the stuff you fin really tricky. If you're really good at biology and it comes naturally but find Geography really tricky, then rather than doing 2 hours of revision for each of them, you might be better off doing 3 hours of Geography and only 1 hour of Geography- this will be a better use of your time. Hope that helps :)

    • @LewisSeal
      @LewisSeal 5 місяців тому

      Econ was all in the evaluation for me, I thought the points themselves were actually quite repetitive (so try and find analytical points that are quite common across topics so there's less to learn). For the evaluation (which I found harder) I think your best just repeating essay plans. You can get so many more essay plans done in the time it would take you to actually write the essay that it seems like a better use of your time. If you can nail essay plans then the essays themselves are just about fleshing it out and gaslighting the marker to think you're some next level academic- that's what I did anyway!

    • @LewisSeal

      Geography is an interesting one. I think you've got to approach it on layers of importance. Get all the basic stuff down first like the key processes to the point where you would be comfortable giving a top 4-6 mark answer. Then you can start adding some of the niche layers from case studies into answers. It's easy to lose the forest from the trees in Geography because of how much information there is, but once you nail all the basic processes and facts, then you can go into more details on the case studies so you can take it to an 8 or 9 level

      @LewisSeal 5 місяців тому

      Hello Jordan mate. English language is a muggy subject, I found that what worked best for me was coming up with plans for essays rather than actually doing them. So if you get up an extract from a past paper, time yourself and see how quickly you can come up with ideas for it because the essay itself is just pulling that all together. I found writing essays was a bit of a waste of time, I could try doing 4 or 5 essay plans to different questions in the same time it took me to write one whole essay, then see what the teachers thought about the plans and whether they were any good or just absolute waffle. Felt like a better use of my time

    Good video, thinking abt applying to maths at Cambridge, do yk any1 who’s doing maths rn? How are they finding it and what were there a levels like, in terms of grades

      Thanks for watching mate. I know a couple of people that do maths, and despite getting As and A*s from what I gather they found it to be a pretty big step up from A levels. I've seen some people spend ages on just a few questions but they seem to have enjoyed it, sounds like they already view maths in a whole other way. Hopefully that helps, if not lmk. Good luck!
