Willie was a Hippie

Are you ready to hit the open road with me? Come along for an adventure and explore the SF Bay area from the seat of a motorcycle. On this channel, I'll share my stories, experiences, and insights from my rides. Join me on my journey and join in on the conversation in the comments section! My dad and uncle used to race motorcycles & my dad was a Harley Davidson mechanic for many years. I've lived all around the SF Bay Area growing up. I WAS a hippie kid! I went to a hippie school for a year and our teacher had several pet wolves, two cougars, and an otter! The Grateful Dead partied at my family's house in Palo Alto, CA. My dad was friends with Pigpen. Jerry Garcia gave my aunt guitar lessons. Riding is therapeutic and I'm doing this for fun and sharing. I've set the bar low. I can only get better at this. lol -Willie

Night Ride Hwy 9 Twisties - Kinda Scary
Переглядів 4514 місяці тому
A semi-scary night ride on the Highway 9 twisties while riding my Ninja 400 KRT motorcycle. I didn't plan my ride well and checked out a campground off Highway 1 but then got caught in a cold, wet fog bank on my way to the mountains. Then I had to ride in the dark through the mountains to get home. Stopped off at the vista point on Hwy 9 and was surprised to see all the people with sports cars!...
La Honda Road on a Ninja 400 KRT

This is a recent ride I took on La Honda Road, off Skyline Blvd in the mountains. I road my 2022 Kawasaki Ninja 400. I first make a left at Alice's restaurant, where all the bikers and locals like to frequent. Then I take a right and go down La Honda Rd. This road will take you to the ocean and Half Moon Bay. I didn't feel like going that far so I turned around. I took it easy on this ride as I...
Go To Backroads Ride on my Ninja 400 KRT

Does every biker have a "Go To" ride? This is mine when I'm short on time as it's close to where I live yet its a fun ride through the countryside. Also, part of my family settled off this road in the late 1800's! Just wish I could find the old 50 acre ranch we once owned as I've never seen it but in old photos. Breaking in some new Michelin Road 6 tires on my 2022 Ninja 400 KRT motorcycle. I had over 5K miles on the Dunlops that came with the bike. I hear these tires a much better than the stock tires. You are supposed to take it easy for 50-100 miles to break in new tires (wear off the slick coating). I got in about 75 miles this day. These tires already felt better than the stock tires. -Willie
Do you right at night? Suzuki S40 Boulevard

This is a short video. I had an electrical issue fixed that was preventing my front headlight, turn signals, and horn from working. I could not figure out exactly what the issue was and decided to bring it into Spec-1 Motorcycle Repair to have them check it out & fix it, which they did! Ninja 400 lane filtering splitting and close call

Lane filtering and splitting in heavy traffic after work on my Ninja 400 KRT motorcycle. Also, a close call near the end. The decision was to either brake and back off or speed up and get past. I'll admit, I did slow a bit to look they guy in the eyes before speeding off. :) Can you spot the number of Teslas in this video? There are so many of them around here! -Willie

After getting my ECU flashed in my Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT Edition motorcycle, I hit a small bump and my speedometer and odometer stopped working! Also, my ABS light stayed on. It turned out it was due to loose connectors under the gas tank. Two connector ends would not "click" together per my mechanic. They used zip ties to fix the connectors. All is good now! -Willie
Tennis meant no motorcycles...

In my past life, I was a tennis pro. I grew up eating, sleeping, everything tennis. It was my dream. I didn't ride motorcycles back then, as a result, trying not to risk injury. Ironically, I had so many tennis-related injuries over the years! I even had shoulder surgery (17 years too late). I'm still hitting on weekends when I can & hope to play some tournaments once I get back into shape! Hop...
Suzuki S40 Ride on a Hot Summer Day

I put on some new Avon grips on my 2006 Suzuki S40 cruiser motorcycle today. I had to do some drilling using a drill bit and saw for metal so I could put my bar end mirrors properly. Then I had to, obviously, take the bike for a ride to test out the grips! They are much better than my previous grips. As it is hot now, I wear a mesh Alpine Stars jacket to keep cooler in the summer. I know it is ...

Selllll it!!!!!!
It sounds like one big sustained WET FART!!!😂😂😂😂😂
hell yea I give you$1500 I paid $2000 for the same bike and it doesn’t sound like that , but I don’t regret it it’s a fun bike man
Nice ride!
Thanks! ☮
Not sure what the deal is? My high res videos end up not looking high res after uploading them. Ughh!
Very nice ride!
Guten Morgen.... :-)
Hope you are doing well in Germany! How's the weather? ✌
Lots of people run the s40 on the researve. Then they run out of gas. As soon as my bike starts to sputter, I turn it to the researve and get gas less than 15 miles after that. Yes, if you do a long canyon trip with no gas stations, it can run out if not topped off. Love your vids!
Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it! Yes, the sputtering sound and using the reserve switch were things I learned early on with this bike. Another thing I learned is if this bike sits for a long time (many weeks/months), it stalls a bit when first taking it out. After that, it runs great. Thanks again and ride safe out there! :)
This is my first bike and drive it on long trips a lot. Mine caps out at 90mph but it does have a lvl 2 exhaust modification. Mine also doesn't seem to vibrate as much as others I've seen though and really only starts vibrating after 75mph
I think it's a fine first bike. I liked getting to enjoy the "old school" feel of the S40 as it reminds me of the old motorcycles my dad & uncle raced. Probably nothing like my dad's old BSA but it has that old thumper feel to it. I agree with the power and vibration notes you made. 85-90 MPH max (sometimes, I just don't feel like pushing it for too long) and the vibrations are worse the faster you go. Thanks for watching and stay safe while enjoying your first bike! -Willie
I chatted to 2 gay lads touring on a Savage - they seemed to like it and reckoned it had enough power
Wonder how it performs with the extra weight? They might enjoy the vibrations though. "Doodle on a motorcycle" (channel) enjoyed it as her first bike. 😂😂
I use a GoPro Hero Black 7 to record my videos in 1080p. Something funky happens once uploaded to UA-cam. Perhaps, it is a compression issue. They don't look as sharp on UA-cam compared to locally on the PC. On this one, it looks like it goes in/out of focus. I need to figure out how to fix this. 🤔
How exactly did you do the exhaust?
@@daysgonesequel Custom made by the previous owner who just cut some metal tubing. 😂
What jets were in that bike?
Not sure. Bought it used off a buddy. Thanks, for watching. :)
i wish folks who post these nice vids would also give the locations... where is this? :D
South San Fran Bay Area. San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Santa Cruz, Highway 9, Skyline Blvd, are areas I ride generally.
@@williewasahippie oh thanks, I thought it might be somewhere in the Northeast 😀
Have a problem with my Triumph motorcycle engine knocking. Is it possible that the ECU programming cause the engine to start knocking ? Is it possible that the factory mapping could become corrupt or partially corrupt and cause engine knocking ? Thank you !
I've read that it's possible but not common. If the programming is incorrect or if there are issues with the ECU, it could potentially lead to knocking. However, ECU-related issues are typically less common causes of knocking. Just did some searching for this info: Engine knocking is more commonly caused by issues such as: Using the wrong fuel octane, Problems with the ignition system, Incorrect air-fuel mixture. Mechanical issues like worn bearings or piston problems, Carbon build-up in the combustion chamber...
@@williewasahippie : thanks Willie I appreciate your response. Been in contact with a guy in the UK and he’s been searching for the cause for three years. With the intensive research I’ve done in the past few weeks, the cause seems to be the cam-chain tensioner. Not 100% on this but it makes sense, considering all the 900 and 1200 bonneville engines have this very common knocking noise immediately following the initial oil change. Our thoughts are that the Castrol oil is thicker than the factory break in oil and it delays the oil pressure into the tensioner resulting in the knocking. What happens is, the engine starts out running fine, after 30 seconds it starts to knock in at last roughly 2 minutes and then as the engine has warmed up, the noise is less noticeable. It does not completely go away. At times when the engine is completely hot, it’s not noticeable. Yet if you continue riding it, it seems like there’s a bag of nails inside the engine bouncing around. I’m thinking that the tensioner just isn’t getting full oil pressure considering it’s hydraulically activated so the noise is intermitting. I don’t know much about engine mapping, but I mentioned it to the service and he said that the mapping is the original from the factory. Does that mean that the ECU programming is different than the mapping and they both control different aspects of the electronics ? They claim they made no valve adjustments and did not go into the engine during the scheduled service. I would love your thoughts, please !
@@ginoasci The ECU programming will differ from bike to bike (e.g., depending on what the bike has and what the ECU can control). Also, different people will have different mappings for different purposes. I've only had it done once. I didn't upgrade my exhaust, other than just putting a slip-on muffler.
I have bigger cc bikes but this is a perfect machine for around town. It’s light an nimble. Hop on something big and heavy and you will appreciate the small bike. I want to buy one.
Totally agree! It was perfect me as my first bike. It has that classic thumper look and, if you've never ridden before, will feel powerful because you have nothing to compare it too. It was great for me to learn on. I did try to sell it a couple of times but I still have it. My wife wants me to sell it but I'm leaning toward keeping it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry, for the late reply. :)
Hope you kept it
Hello and thanks for the comment. Yes, I still have it. I have it in my garage now. I kept it in the driveway under an orange tree for a couple of years and decided to save the bike from the abuse (falling oranges)! :)
Holyfreedom gloves, nice
Thanks! They are nice. They are well made, comfortable, and have a nice old school look. I wear them when I ride the old thumper. Thanks for watching, and commenting. :)
@@williewasahippie I recently bought yellow Helstons gloves and I also want to replace my rebel 250 with a suzuki savage/s40 :D
@@31user31 Nice! I'm glad I never bought either a Honda Rebel or Royal Enfield Meteor. Instead, I got the S40 for $1500. Sunk some $$ into it but had extra money to buy my gear and pay for my MSF course. :)
I have a 2001 Savage 650 with exhaust and it sounds amazing. Not a scratch or scuff on the bike and the chrome is all pristine.. will eventually get rid of it for something bigger but it was a very good decision, 7k miles and I only paid 1600… not a single problem, at all.
Nice! You got a great deal for a good starter bike! Mine came with ten year old cracked tires that needed replacing (had sort of a low side "slide" to prevent running over a homeless man who jumped in front of me) and things were dangerously loose (e.g., throttle cable housing was loose and resulted in a struck throttle while doing 50 MPH for my first time ever). :)
@@williewasahippie man I consider myself blessed then glad you made the fix lol, happy it ended well for you brother ride safe 🙌🏾
@@ammccc Thanks! Nothing new tires, a screwdriver and some Loctite couldn't fix! Haha. Ride safe out there as well. 👍✌
I'm gonna get one this year for commuting to college
You should get a good deal on one. Good for local commutes.
Your bike sounds great ! What are you running for a pipe?
My friend and his cousin "made it". :)
I'm thinking of buying an S40...how did you make yours louder?
My friend and his cousin got some metal and made a pipe out of it! :)
Hey Willie, nice that you made another video with the S40. Greetings from Germany..
Thanks! I still have the S40. I hope all is well with you over in Germany!
@@williewasahippie As always, we have bad weather for motorcycling. I hope I can get started in April!
What’s your exhaust sounds great
It was custom-made by my friend and his cousin who sold me the bike. I like the sound too. Just a piece of metal they shaped to fit! Definitely need to wear earplugs though! Thanks for watching. I hope to be more active on here when the weather dries up. Rainy lately. :)
Did you modify the exhaust? It sounds awesome!
I bought it off my friend and his cousin. They "made" the straight pipe add-on. Their homemade version of a slip-on. I do like the sound. Thanks, for watching. It's been raining a lot around here so I've not been active lately.
Is the main 30a fuse under it or in the same area?
Hi. Sorry, saw this really late! I'm not sure, but a bunch of connectors are in the same area as the harness for the ECU. I look at another YT channel to see how someone else removed the ECU.
I was watching your video , and I'm like that road seems familiar. hahhahha it used to be my everyday rd . haha nice brother
Hi there! Sorry, for responding so late. My channel is less active compared to when I first started on YT. Thanks for watching and posting. There are nice roads around here. I'll get out there and upload more vids when the weather gets better. Thanks & ride safe out there. :)

Hi. What does that mean, BTW?
I was at that race. I love Flat track. Need more events.
That looked like a fun race to be at! My uncle was suggesting I go check out the Sacramento Mile race.
keep it
I just got some electrical issues fixed (wiring for headlight, front turn signals, and horn). I still like the look sound sound of this bike. :)
Hell yea got a 95 savage and I put a harly muffler on it and it sounds mint
I also have same year but I have no exhaust at all just a baffle and it can be heard for miles
A nice ride down a twisty road. Perfect road for a thumper. What state was that in?
Thanks! Northern California, South Bay Area (e.g., San Jose, Morgan Hill).
to me that looks like watsonville rd awesome.
Yep. :)
How much vibration?
It does vibrate a lot. It was my first bike so I had nothing to compare it with until I got my Ninja 400, which is more comfortable and has less vibration. Thanks, for watching! -Willie
Love your defensive riding! The south bay traffic is getting really bad in the recent years.
Thanks! Yes, traffic is bad around here. Normally, I just ride up in the mountains and avoid cars, unlike this day. Thanks, for watching! 👍🤙
Where is this
San Jose heading into Milpitas, CA. Teslas are EVERYWHERE around here!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I have a 2007 S40, for five years I ride it almost every day. It's very easy to ride. Easy to turn. It was only 2,000$ with 7 k miles on it. So it was as cheap to own as a new 50cc scooter. But it is a motor cycle. Sounds like the lawn mower I used to ride on the golf coarse Thump thump thump. "Pop" (hint if you turn the idle down it will stop that loud pop when you shut it off) 🙂
Hi. Sorry, for the late reply. I don't get notified of all comments so I have to search... Anyway, yes, your bike was one year newer than mine and I bought mine for about $1500. That's about the cost of a lot of ebikes! I am planning to sell it but now my front turn signals, light, and horn stopped working after I hosed off the bike. I think something shorted!!! This bike doesn't want to leave me. lol :)
Where can I find that seat at
Hey there. Air-Flow is the brand and it was about $80. It's a seat cover meant to give you a little cushion but also some airflow to keep your butt cooler on a hot day. I bought it a couple of years ago but cannot remember from what site I ordered it from. I can't seem to find their website when I Google for info. But you will see other sites mention the brand. You might take a look at this site: windriderseatcovers.com/

@@williewasahippie Ah dang... I have been informed by both my neighbours and police that I CAN'T DO THAT. They don't like straightpipes around here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for reply tho!
UPDATE! FIXED! I had my local Spec-1 Motorcycle Repair shop check it out and they fixed it! Sensor connectors came undone under the gas tank & were no longer "clicking" in. They had to zip-tie the connectors and all is good now. :)
Now, it's the same with my problem. I will try as you say and feed back.
@@dongfangbubai671 Yeah. Unfortunately, I probably loosened the connector when I pulled out/put in the ECU. Good luck fixing your issue. I think some people are told to replace their sensors. That makes no sense (on a new bike) unless Kawasaki sold defective sensors.
@@williewasahippieI heard that the sensors are just really fragile. Even using a paddock stand in the rear can damage it, that’s what happened to me
@@Urnnn420 Yeah. I'm glad that wasn't the issue for me & it was just the connectors disconnected under the gas tank. I read about people replacing the sensors a few times. Sounds like a major pain!
@@williewasahippie I wanted to replace the sensor today while I was installing frame sliders but turns out you have to remove the gas tank. It’s not that you have to remove it, but it’ll make routing the new sensor a lot easier
