Glazing Showdown: Double Glazing vs Single - Our French Renovation, The Good Life
Welcome to our Glazing Showdown, where we witnessed the epic battle between Double Glazing and Single Glazing! Join us as we dive into the world of window efficiency and aesthetics. Is all the hype about noise reduction and thermal efficiency true?
Our current windows are on their last legs, leaving our freezing bathroom exposed to the elements. The broken paned single glazed window has become an invitation for howling winds and unwanted drafts. It's time to put these windows to the test!
Before the freezing winter arrives, it's crucial to give our bathroom windows some kind of attention. The putty is in desperate need of replacement, and the rotting wood cries out for a makeover. These pine windows might not even be original to the house, so it's time for an upgrade.
Now, enter the double glazed units. These beauties come in standard metric sizes 'off the shelf' in France, making them a cost-effective solution for our problem. Forget about custom-made units; we're going for affordable and efficient A+ rated replacements, that come with 10 year guarantees!
While we know that double glazed windows will instantly enhance the aesthetics and prevent pesky drafts and insects from sneaking in, the burning question remains: Will they pass the thermal test? To find out, we set up a basic experiment. We all learnt in school, heat rises, but exactly how much radiates sideways?
Equipped with thermometers, we first measure the temperature with our current window setup. Then, we turn on the heated towel rail and repeat the experiment once the double glazed window replacement is complete. The results will surprise you!
So, if you're thinking about window replacement and want to make sure your home stays cozy this winter, join us in this Glazing Showdown as we uncover the truth about Double Glazing versus Single Glazing.
We reveal the true winner of the Window Showdown Will double glazing prove its worth in better insulation and thermal efficiency? Or will the single glazed windows cling onto their last shreds of dignity? It's time to find out!
Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell for more home improvements! Comment below if you've had your own window showdown or have any other experiences. Let’s get started on this chilly challenge together!

Chimney Demolition, Down it comes! - Our French Renovation, The Good Life

The rear of our house has a serious damp problem. It's mainly been caused by a badly constructed concrete chimney. However the guttering and down pipes leak, the rendering has started to detach, the windows are rotten and rainwater is being directed into our caves. Before we can even start to repair the damage caused, we potentially have months of labour intensive clearing to do. Most of the tr...
Clearing the Decks - Playtime in a Chateau Hay Loft - Our French Renovation, The Good Life

Applying hard-wax to redwood parquet floors proved to be incredible satisfying but nowhere near as pleasing as clearing a chateau hay loft for a couple of lovely friends. Lesa and Ted, our good friends at Chateau De Montmagner offered us a Bus-man's holiday, for a few hours work we could come a stay in their wonderful chateau. Obviously, we'd be daft to say no. Our chestnut parquet floor was caked in the detritus of decorating. There was no way it could be bought back to life. The boards were originally cut with an axe and were very distorted. Broken windows, missing boilers, rodent and insect infestations had all left stains, scratches and holes. Having used huge industrial floor sanders in the past, I knew their limitations and issues, so I opted to...

We have nearly finished renovating our bedroom. However, without furniture it will be empty. Luckily, Antique Fairs are springing up everywhere. Ready, Set, Plaster : Our French Stucco Bedroom Makeover - Our French Renovation, The Good Life

French stucco plastering is much more difficult to perfect than the less pure gypsum plastering many are used to in the UK. It never sets as hard UK plaster, however with tons of patience that doesn't mean the final finish has to be anything short of perfection. You do have to be pre-prepared, with all your tools to hand and the wall nicely wetted down. Mastering the art of French plastering at...
Bump in the Night: Building an Oak Window Frame Without Loosing Sleep - Our French Renovation

The recent change in weather brought a nasty surprise; a window including it's frame was blown in with a earth shattering boom. Not exactly what you need in the middle of the night. Our only option was to prop the 150 year old rotten remains back into the hole until we could make a handmade oak replacement. Having never trained in woodwork, with few tools to my name, making an Oak multi-pane wi...

Home Improvements - Our French Renovation, The Good Life

Basic home improvements are the name of the game. Thermal insulation and a complete re-wire. Last year we saw amazing results from packing natural wool into our ceiling cavities. Not only was the sound deadening incredible but at least 10°C were retained each night. This essentially means having the heating on for less time per night and for 4 weeks less per year. When we bought our property, w...

Still binge watching my way through your videos. Some observations: 1. You both are judicious in your decisions about how to restore and renovate the house, 2. As I'm sure you both know better than anyone else, you make a great team. 3. It appears to me over the course of the videos I've watches so far, you are both in better shape physically and better shape mentally.

Like many who take on renovations, we are just DIY novices, with barely a clue. We were just up for a new adventure and fortunately we have had a fair amount of fun along the way. We recommend the experience and slower rural way pace of life to anyone willing to take the leap. Have faith in your abilities.

Great job and good info. Do you need a vent/fan in the bathroom?. I'm only asking because we'd always used just a de-humidifier [DHM] with the single glazing in winter and noticed a negative difference [mould spots] with the double glazing. It was too much trouble for us to go through the outer walls for a fan so a friend with the skill made a vent in the top of the new wood framed DG window [it was a surprisingly easy job]. We manage easily in the summer by opening the window and still use the DHM in the winter when we have a bath. We know a proper vent will do away with the DHM, we just haven't got around to it yet. Maybe [if required] you could rig a ceiling fan up when you do the new ceiling.

    • @ourfrenchrenovation
      @ourfrenchrenovation 19 днів тому

Yes we definitely need an extractor fan now, another job to add to the list lol. Will wheel our DHM in until we get round to the ceiling :)

Welcome to the Creuse! Yes, Extremely easy to fit. A doddle. We've done numerous ones now. Leroy Merlin for new ones or check the brocantes as the often have immaculate second hand ones in a ton of sizes. ReMaBat, Maximums, Reclaimation Yard etc... Just remember they are bigger than the size advertised on the web, so add a few centimeters.
