This is by far the best way I've seen to load a kayak on and off a J Cradle roof rack. I have an Old Town Otter that weighs 43lbs. When I was younger I used to pick it up and throw it into the cradles. A few years ago I had to start using a step stool; picking up the kayak, stepping up on the step stool, then throwing it into the cradles. I recently almost fell off the step stool while trying to throw it into the cradles and decided that method was way too unsafe. I found your method today and gave it a try. WOW!!! What a difference. I put my kayak on and took it off the roof rack three times in about 5 minutes using your method, just to get the hang of it. I was completely blown away with how much easier it is to do. No straining, no struggling. Thanks for posting!

I first got a Scupper Pro double hatch in 2000, and in 2008, switched it out for a tankwell version. It is still in great shape, well loved and kept away from the sun in my garage. Apparently the Scupper 16 is a bigger and further refinement of that same design, using better materials. I would love to try this kayak and compare the handling & performance to mine.

Just wanted to chime in with some specifics that will make this harder or easier depending on the situation. I found this video and was very excited to try to solo load my Crescent Crew tandem kayak onto my 2020 Kia Soul roof rack (this is not a joke). There are 3 things that made this significantly more difficult than I was hoping. 1. While the Crew is technically shorter than the Scupper 14, it is 10" wider, and has a very bulbous side profile. This makes it pretty tricky to slide into the J cradle without it wanting to slide out. 2. The Crew is 79 lbs, which is ~25% heavier than the Scupper 14. The combo of the weight and the very round side profile makes it really tough to keep tucked into the cradle and maneuver the 2nd half into position. 3. My vehicle has OEM roof racks, and Yakima Jaylows. The OEM rack puts the Jaylows pretty far inboard, as opposed to the setup shown here, where the cradles appear to be overhanging the side of the vehicle. I mostly avoided contact by just throwing a bath mat over the space between the racks, but it was definitely impossible to only make contact w/ the cradle. I don't want to be negative - I imagine this method totally works for lots of situations, and I actually think that I could make it work with practice and the right approach/trajectory with my current setup. Just wanted to provide some context for others who might be looking at loading a big kayak solo. I can lift my 55 lbs Tarpon 105 over my head and throw it in the racks without much issue, so I was hoping this method would make the Crew just as easy. Thanks for making the video! Maybe someday I'll use it for a Scupper 14 ;-)

The scuba cylinder would be set with the BCD/back plate and regulator in the tank well. This way it's ready to dive in when you get to the site. Having the BCD inflated allows it to float. So the diver can don it in water.

Good to see Tim further developing his kayak concept. As a boat designer, I could see that the original was too wide forward of the cockpit inhibiting paddle catch (entry) close enough to the kayak to be paddling efficient and yet somehow it worked well enough to be one of the best SOTs for years. This says more about the poor designs out there. This incarnation is a huge improvement. My only wish is that it was not shorter than the original. 15' would have been the sweet spot. I have not seen or tried the Scupper 14 in the UK yet. I will be sure to try it when I do.

One correction you should make is that the hatch requires a 4.5 inch hole saw. I made the mistake of using 4 inches and then figured it out too late. Easy enough fix though taped the piece of plastic in so I have a guide and used a 4.5 inch hole saw and hatch is installed.
