This channel is about my journey through racing.
I'm currently racing with Spec Corvette, which is a growing series based on the C5 Corvette (1997 - 2004) that I absolutely love. I post race video from the tracks that we visit, like Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Auto Club Speedway, Willow Springs, Chuckwalla, and Circuit of the Americas. I also make how-to content around building and maintaining a Spec Corvette.

Spec Corvette West Region Race 1 at Buttonwillow Raceway Config 25 CW - 9/15/2024 with Cal Club SCCA
This is the first (and final for me) race of the weekend. I started 2nd of 12 cars, with a 1:53.059 in qualifying, 0.5 second behind Gena and 0.4 second ahead of AP. The start was a bit of a circus, with the new Vitour tires taking a bit longer to warm up than the Nankangs did, everyone was a little more slidey than usual. I received a little bump from the rear, coming into the buttonhook (turn 2), which sent me solidly into Greg Nester at the apex. Not sure there was enough room there, even without the help, though. My alignment got knocked out from the impact and I thought about bringing it in, but the car was "good enough" to keep racing. I picked up the pace after a lap or two and managed to get to the front, with the help of a few front runners retiring from mechanical issues, then suffered my own mechanical the lap after taking the lead. Note the nice plume of smoke in the rearview at the end of the video. When I saw the smoke, I reached for the kill switch immediately, thinking I threw a rod. Looks like it might be a failed head gasket, though. Will know more when I get it home and pull the head.

Hot Lap from Morning Warmup at Buttonwillow Raceway, Config 25 CW - 11/16/24

Shaved off 0.4 second from the day prior and managed a similar time in qualifying. There's still a 1:52 out there, for sure.
Hot Lap from Testing at Buttonwillow Raceway, Config 25 CW - 11/15/24

Here's yesterday's hot lap from test. The comparison lap was from the second session of the day, this one is lap 10 of the last session of the day. (There was a lot of slow traffic in the afternoon, so it was difficult to get clean air...) As you can see from the delta comparison, I have some work to do on consistency. There's a 1:52 in there if I can combine the best areas of those two laps......

This is race 1 of our 2 race weekend with Cal Club SCCA. I'm starting 3rd in class (4th on grid). I lost ABS about 1/3 of the way into the race, but managed to find a decent balance braking into 1 and 5 to stay competitive.

Plastidip on a Race Car - 1st Attempt
Переглядів 390Місяць тому
I’ve been curious about Plastidip for a while and decided to give it a go on the Spec Corvette. The last time (and only time) I painted a race car, I did it without a booth and had a few boogers/bugs in the paint, along with abundant orange peel because I had no idea what I was doing. The Plastidip was fairly easy to lay down (no runs or tiger striping) but you have to pay attention to the gun ...
Spec Corvette at Laguna Seca - Best Announcing EVER

We're back at Laguna Seca this weekend, which had me thinking about our race here last July. This is definitely my favorite segment from a Spec Corvette race. Chris and James (announcers) had me cracking up when I watched the race afterward. Can't wait to see what they have to say in the broadcast later today. I’ll go install that passenger seat now.

One of my favorite moments from the last race at @WeatherTechRaceway_LagunaSeca. Side by side through The Corkscrew with Marc LaCorte. Didn’t even come close to making contact. Big high-fives and a hug in impound after the race. That’s great racing!

Spec Corvette Build - Corner Balance and Alignment
Love the notes from the run. I hope we can make it to more races next year and that we can have more fun. Till next time. Thanks for being one of the best in sharing your videos and knowledge of everything involved.
It'll be great to get back out there with you! I'm already looking forward to 2025!
That doesn't look good! Damm! Sorry to see that.
Yeah, I saw and felt a loss of power at the end of the straight and saw the smoke just after turn-in, so I hit the kill switch at the apex of riverside. Not sure if it’s just a blown head gasket or a cracked block. It wasn’t a complete failure, though. Pulled the plugs and had a nice oil/water mixture come out of cylinder 2. Pulled the valve cover and the valves/springs/pushrods all look good. Guess we’ll see when I get it home and pull the head.
@@joshc1017 Hope it is not serious. sorry it didn't go so well yesterday. Points are going all over the place. Can't wait to see what happens today.
Do we know if there will be in car race coverage? Lookin good! Good luck and hope you sweep it!
There wasn’t yesterday. Not sure why. Likely that the producer wasn’t available. Not sure about today.
Thank you for the video Josh. I hope that you set a new personal best time.
Thanks! I got it down to 1:53.05 this morning but I know there’s another 1/2 second in there…
Thanks for the video looks quick is this with the new tire
Yes, the new tire seems to be 1.5 to 2 seconds per lap faster. The prior lap record for this configuration was 1:56.6 but that was in 2019, before the rear spoiler, I believe.
Hey! Loving the videos - helps me create a vision for what to do with my C5 (getting it on the edge with still being streetable though) QQ about all of the switches: Specifically for the fuel door release switch, did you use a relay or is it literally just a momentary push button? I'm relocating mine and wondering what I need to get (if it's just as simple as a button lol)
It’s literally just a simple momentary switch. No relay needed.
@@joshc1017 Gotcha - thank you! Some friends at a garage near me were telling me I needed a relay for it or I'm gonna start a fire... and I was scratching my head😆
@@dylanameyerthe fuel door, trunk release, and traction control are all low load signals, like a signal wire to a relay. Simply completing the circuit is good enough and that all the factory switch was doing in the first place. You do want relays for heavier loads. For example, I run relays for the wideband O2 sensors, trans and diff coolers, cool shirt, and even the camera system. I still use the ignition supply to trigger those relays but agree that you wouldn’t want to pull a bunch of power from that wire to run heavy loads.
What happens if your measurement is wrong ? Will you know right away or will it cause damage?
If you have a stock master cylinder, you notice that the clutch releases too close to the floor. If it’s set properly, release will be closer to the middle of pedal throw. If you ave an adjustable master cylinder, you can adjust there to make up for it.
I cannot tell you how many times ive watched your vids and learned a lot about my car 2002 Corvette
Awesome to hear! I’m glad they help!
I gotta get this done over the winter. Great vid! Thanks!
Thanks! It wasn’t as impressive as I was hoping on the dyno but still a good thing to do.
You west coast guys are having way too much fun!
Have you ever done a dyno tune on your engines to see how close you are the 380hp limit? It would be interesting to see how motors with a lot of miles on them have held up and to see how much a good tune does for them.
Yes, we’re required to supply a dyno sheet to be eligible to race. We also use data acquisition to calculate theoretical horsepower and torque, which is collected after qualifying and races. Interestingly, older engines have a tendency to produce more power than freshly rebuilt versions, but that’s not always true. Certainly a tired engine with worn rings, etc. will start to produce less power. To be honest, I was surprised by the lack of power increase in the silver car after cleaning and replacing the injectors. It came back within 1 HP of the original tuning session. It never produced more than 360 hp at the wheels and is down to 340 (according to data acquisition) after 3 seasons of racing. That motor is coming out for a refresh this winter. The blue car (formerly black) produced 383 and was detuned to 374 to keep it safely under the limit.
Misleading video thought it was gonna be showing you how to fix it
@josh Carroll did you ever find a more permanent mounting solution for the front shock reservoirs?
They’re still mounted that way. I haven’t seen a better mounting solution from anyone else, so I’d probably use the same roll bar mounts that I used in the back to mount the front canisters more securely in the exact same location (replacing the band clamps). Access to the schrader valve each weekend is important and I really do like how easy it is to measure pressure.
What happened at 21:40 down the straight? Looks like you let up and shifted into neutral for some reason.
It was a complete brain shutdown. The engine was about to hit redline (like it does every time down the straight) and I instinctively tried to grab 5th. When I did, I realized a screwed up and went to grab 4th, then thought better of it and decided to coast into the braking zone. No good reason for any of it. Just a brain malfunction.
Now you just need to flock it while it's out.
It's one of those self-flocking dashes (flocked with dust, that is), every time I drive the thing off track... Which happened 4 times in turn 9 at WSIR during test on Friday. LOL
Do you need to have the clutch/flywheel balanced before you install it?
I’ve never had mine balanced. Just installed them straight out of the box.
Great to know Thanks!!
Mine had a bunch of clear in the slots too. I just spun the bolts in the slots with a drill and it cut exactly how much I needed. I dropped more hex keys than I want to admit inside the bumper while tightening it onto the bumper.
Looks awesome & great video!
Thank you!
Are you just using low amp switches? No relays or anything right? Gonna work on this soon and would rather save the money if I don’t have to buy heavy duty switches!
Yes, the momentary switches are only sending a voltage signal. No need for heavy duty.
Hey man, first thanks for all of these videos. I am in the middle of a build and they are super helpful. Did you ever make a video about getting that airbag cover off and back into the dash? I just got mine removed today. Thanks!
I did make a video for that but it looks like I never posted it. I’ll dig through the footage to see if I can find it. In short, you can slide the cover off of the airbag and use silicone or caulk to glue it in from the back.
@@joshc1017 No worries man, I think I figured it out doing exactly what you described. Thanks!
Hi,Josh when you rotate the coupler to find the less round out you have to torque the bolts every time you change the rotation?
Great question! It’s probably best if you do but I did not fully torque them each time because it’s kind of a pain. I got them close, then double checked everything after final assembly.
@@joshc1017 Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.Regards
As always thanks for sharing. For a racecar it looks good. I may try that with mine.
They make a glossy clear that you can use as a top coat. I would have laid that on top if I could get it in CA. Maybe give that a shot. I think it looks better and it should be easier to clean.
That was awesome! you should make a short out of this clip as well!
I appreciate your videos Josh as I have learned quite a bit from you. Thank you.
I’m glad they’re helpful. Thanks!
Do you have to sand the car before painting or just make sure it's clean and go right ontop of the existing paint job?
It just needs to be clean. It’s basically a spray on wrap.
Congratulations on two good races.
Thanks!
Good race. Too bad the camera froze at 15:50.
Yeah, I need to figure out what’s up with that camera. It missed some good action in the second race.
71 had some good brakes or a great corner approach, always seemed to hold that inside line.
That will never get old! 😂😂
Wow! That was fun! I thought you were going to have a hood ordainment on lap 2 in turn two. You about drove right over David H that time. Great driving. Can't wait to be on track again.
Yeah, my brakes did not want to cooperate that time around. Dave's eyes got huge when we watched the footage last night. I had a couple pucker moments at the exit of 6, too. Now to dial it back just a hair so I make fewer mistakes...
That was a close one!
Racing today at laguna? Speccorvette website says there was a race last weekend in Utah
Yeah, we cancelled Utah and replaced it with Laguna. Sounds like we need to fire our web admin...
@@joshc1017 dang that could really mess up someone’s weekend. Are you guys racing tomorrow at laguna?
@@sshag4653yes, qualifying at 9:45, race around 2 pm. Race should be livestreamed on the racing network.
About fuel load. I know the C5 pulls fuel from the right tank first until empty, then starts pulling from the left tank. Do you think this would make a significant difference during the balance weighing whether half or full? 9 gal of gas is around 60 lbs.
Yes, 60 lbs makes a difference and the right rear wheel is light at 1/2 tank (from a cross weight perspective). Some folks like to bring the car in close to empty at the end of a race and calculate the amount of gas they need to have in each race. That stresses me out, so I prefer to start full. In either case, weight distribution is changing as you consume fuel, so you’re either starting closer to 50/50 or finishing that way, assuming you’re running 30-40 minute sprint races.
Damn, dude in front at 8:44 practically parked it on the apex. What was the car doing before you lowered the rear 1/2" and how did lowering it help? Thanks Josh!!
Yeah, I really wasn’t expecting to reel him in like that, even with the different lines we were taking through 1 and 2. Before lowering the rear, the car was more twitchy under braking and wanted to rotate too much when trail breaking. With the back wanting to step out at turn entry, it was hard to get power down early.
Nice work. Did you re use the factory upper shroud? I’m thinking of deleting mine not sure if it will affect the cooling.
Yes, I used the factory upper shroud. I’ve seen one racer make his own shroud and use silicone to get a tighter seal and force all air through the radiator. He also removed the factory fans and replaced them with a 14” fan to keep it cool enough at idle in the pits but allow more air through at speed. His coolant temps run lower, so I’m putting that (replacing fans) on my list as something to try.
Some spicy driving there boys! Nice work by all!
Thank you!
bad ass! i got a little turned up watching that!
Wow!
What do I do with the air hose? I plugged the hole with a grommet like you said. But I have the hose just hanging around there.
Are you going to disable the AIR system? If so, you can remove the air pump, etc. Spec Corvette AIR System Removal ua-cam.com/video/zpP5dauYVOA/v-deo.html
@@joshc1017 I didn’t plan on it. Do I have to with the zip tie conversion?
@@shawn1394if you want to keep the the air system functioning, you can either extend the hose over to the original port, drill a new hole in the opposite side of the air box to move the port, or install a small cone air filter directly on the hose.
@@joshc1017 thank you so much for the info. I appreciate you!
Legend mate, this just helped me fix up my intermittent HVAC power issue on my '97 .. cleaned up contacts and gave them a little bend and bam, now powers up immediately on acc switch ! hugely appreciative :D NOTE - the green cover on the switch is holding the 4x delicate contact parts together, be careful taking it off as mine sprang all over the floor and i had to figure out how they went back together, not too tricky but still
Right on! Glad to hear that it helped!
what is the part number for the steering wheel puller tool?
Well done!
good racing!
Thank you! I had the will power to go light on the WhistlePig this time. LOL
Great driving Josh. That Avian team has strong running cars. I had a hell of a time passing them in my C7Z during the SpeedSF challenge time attack at Laguna.
Thanks! Yes, they are well built. Tim is a pro driver and AP gets a ton of seat time, too.
What a move in traffic to secure P2! I like how you stayed patient and consistent throughout the race, ready to take advantage of the opportunities.
Thanks! It was hard to back out of that first side-by-side with Marc but it was better to not let Tim and AP get away from us.
Congrats-Nice! Wish Barber ran Spec Corvette,
Congratulations on P2 Josh!
I would love to know which bad words were going through your head when you came up on the rental Miatas!
I think the announcers referred to them as ‘flies”, cracked me up. I didn’t have any issues with them though. They were all quick to point by and make room.
I'm surprised, I thought you were running a rear Gspeed wing but it looks like yours isn't but man it looks like a ton of fun!
I am running the spec spoiler from G-Stream but no wings in Spec Corvette. That little spoiler produces quite a bit of extra downforce; so much that it took a while to figure out how to rebalance the car when we added it a couple years ago.
yes sir!
Really enjoying your posts detailing your Spec Corvette experiences. If you don't mind my asking, can you give us some idea what you pay (just to the event organizers, including track access) for running at Laguna Seca. I've tracked there several times so I'm familiar with all the other associated costs. Thanks in advance and keep the great videos coming!
SCCA charged $702 for the double race weekend (Sat and Sun total).
