I'm towing my Lotus Esprit S1 with a Tesla. I've 318 miles range and 151 miles to go. Doable?
Having a sports car hobby means that quite often I need to tow one of my cars to a workshop anywhere in the UK.
Although I didn't buy my Tesla Model Y as a tow car, that's the only car with a tow bar that I currently have. So Tesla it is.
This long range Tesla has been fantastic.
The range during a normal drive is fairly accurate and I've never had any range anxiety with this car.
Now I am going to put it to the test as a tow car.
I need to take my project Lotus Esprit S1 from Berkshire to Grantham. A distance of 151 miles and my long range Tesla has a 318 mile range.
According to the car I should have 167 miles left over at the end.
I really don't want to have to stop for supercharging with the car loaded on the trailer.
So my plan is to get the car delivered without stopping.
Should be plenty of range to get there?
For followers of the Lotus project, check @TheDIYTuners for updates.

Is the Alfa Romeo Mito the best sports car for a new driver?
Переглядів 9882 місяці тому
Is it possible to find a sports car with flair for a new driver who needs a low insurance rating? Possibly... Take a look at this Alfa Romeo Mito 1.0 twin air and see what you think. To me a sports car has something about it. It sounds sporty, is fun to drive and is great to look at. Trust an Italian design team to make something special out of an entry level car!
Jaguar Broadspeed XJC - the ultimate race car replica?
Переглядів 6 тис.3 місяці тому
When the Jaguar Broadspeed XJC was released in the 1970's, as teenagers in the UK we were enthralled with absolutely everything about it. It was the best looking race car we'd ever seen. It was fast, noisy and a proper beast. Although it set blistering times, unfortunately it was a glorious failure in that it couldn't finish races. But it's still indelibly etched on the brains of anyone who was...
Lotus Esprit S1 bought sight unseen from the US, is it a hit or miss?

It's arrived! It's been a bit stressful waiting to find out if I'd bought a pup or not but the day has finally come when I get to collect it from the docks. The Lotus Esprit S1 is a Giorgetto Giugiaro designed James Bond 007 car from the movie 'The Spy who loved me'. This particular S1 is a very rare car, as it was originally specified in white with the tartan interior. One of only 104 in this ...
Ferrari F355 Berlinetta was the car that changed my life and indirectly changed many other lives too

From the moment the Ferrari 355 was launched in the 1990's I really wanted one. Seeing Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear ordering one for himself made me want one even more. Then a test drive sent me to the next level of need. It took me three years from that point to finally owning one. I tell you how I did it. What motivated me. Then my ongoing 26 year story with the Ferrari 355. And my final quest...

Part 4 of my Jaguar XJC John Steed project that's based on the amazing model by GT Spirit. For anyone who thinks I'm crazy for adapting a perfectly good XJC, this John Steed car is an iconic car for anyone who was a fan of the New Avengers from the TV show set in the 1970's. I don't know the reason why the coupe doesn't have the chrome trim on the body beneath the window; however, its interesting that a chrome trim was indeed added to the coupe 2+2 variant. I imagine it was for design purposes in both cases. Thank you for posting your video.

      I had it done over such a long period , I’m not quite sure how much it cost. I bought it mid project, so it had already been completely stripped. And the guy had bought a trim kit, a brake kit, he’d had the engine built, etc etc, so I got lucky. I think it cost me £11k in 2010

    The 360 was not a bad follow up mechanical and design wise. Especially, when doing service on the timing belt. After that I lost interest in Ferrari. The newer stuff has too many cuts and creases (in the design)for aggression and cooling.

    3:15 - Breaking the cardinal rule of closing a trunk, overcoming resistance by forcing it closed. That resistance is how the trunk communicates something is preventing it from closing normally and needs attention before attempting to close it again. Forcing the trunk to close by pressing down hard as the narrator does risks damaging the securing mechanism or worse, could result in damage to the trunk lid due to a protruding object in the trunk bending the lid to enable closure.

    All depends how often you tow. If it’s only occasionally I don’t see that it’s much of a compromise. If you enjoy the EV when not towing and 90% of your driving is without a trailer in tow, just enjoy the 90% use and put up with the slight inconvenience on 10% of your journeys. People need to stop looking for the negatives in anything new.

    Dont get used to it. Send it to scrap and buy a Landcruiser that is suitable for towing, Unlike an EV on super low profile tyres which are really dangerous to tow with. Virtually no passenger car made in the lasat 25 years are suitable to tow a car trailer, large boat or horse float. Not just EVs. And that is Australian cars,, pommy prams have never been suited!! It isn;t 'tall people' who look over the top of the roadster windscreen - I am six foot tall, but I have a relatively short body and long upper legs. So I am fine for looking through the windscreen but I can only JUST get enoug leg- room in my Series II roadster with the roof down, as the seat hits the hood frame. I could never fit in a Series I. Did Sir William never actually SIT in one of these cars?

  • @OpticalMan
    @OpticalMan 23 дні тому

    When towing I reckon to get 50-55% of the range without a trailer which if you think about it is logical. Electric cars are incredibly energy efficient, with very low internal losses. This means that the energy lost while driving is due to two main factors, air resistance and weight. If you increase the amount of air resistance by a factor of 2 and double the weight then of course you are going to lose half your range. With an ICE car most of your energy losses are through heat lost in the exhaust and radiator and adding a trailer doesn't increase these, so proportionally the range lost while towing with an ICE car is far less.

    • @sportscarstory
      @sportscarstory 23 дні тому

      Yes all logical. The reality is challenging because it’s harder to fill up.

    • @dipladonic
      @dipladonic 22 дні тому

      Bullshit. It all comes down to the primary source of energy and the BTUs used thereof. Ultimately, both electric cars and ICE cars are powered via hydrocarbons.

      Yes. I regretted selling mine. The only cure was to buy another.

    Thanks for the test mate, I guess the result is no different to our LR Disco 4 SDV6; it hoses the fuel in when towing and the range halves. Once battery capacity and charging improves then EVs will make the perfect tow car - heavy, no gears, max torque from 0, 4WD. Just not yet.

      Yes. That’s it in a nutshell. Plus having plentiful charging stations geared to tow cars so you don’t have to unhitch

    Why bother, use a diesel to tow. I can see the future service station car parks full of unhooked caravans.

    Not for me, I have no interest in EV’s , diesel landy or Rangy every time , don’t have time for this silliness of finding chargers and messing with range, it defeats the point of using a vehicle to get a job done, it’s like the tail wagging the dog

      and you have to park/charge selfishly if towing

    The loss of mpg with a diesel or even petrol towing seems lower with respect to the energy loss of the EV. Thanks for the video. Aren't the Volvo turbodiesel estates good towing vehicles?

      @sportscarstory 24 дні тому

      Yes they’re good too. I just fancy an old Range Rover. Thanks for watching!

      I've got a 2006 Volvo V70 d5. On a long run I'll easy get 55mpg average. It could tow a mountain. Without towing anything, brim the fuel tank and you get 850-900 miles range. My car has 288k miles and still drives like it's new. Why would I ditch a £3000 car and buy a £40,000 car that in comparison is crap?!
