Square Quilt on Longarm with ProStitcher & Quilting Space
I recently started using the Quilting Space feature on ProStitcher to square up quilts as I longarm. My quilting friend, Sherri Harmer, told me about it. I used to think Quilting Space was to mark your throat space so you will not bump into the bars accidentally. It does do that, but it will also serve as a guide to squaring up a quilt. In this video, I demonstrate 1) how to create the quilting space and 2) how to utilize it to keep your quilt square.

Please know how very much I appreciate your views. I am doing this to help others and because I am a teacher and miss the classroom, so it lifts my spirits when I know I am not doing it for nothing, and that it has helped someone or at least been a little entertaining. What passionate quilter doesn't like to watch others quilt? I know I do.
Let me know what else you would like to see. I also do machine embroidery and sew quilts and make pillows.
Cheers!

Fix/Restitch a Previous Quilted Row

I completed a quilt and was checking the backing when I noticed a problem. I must have run out of bobbin thread and didn't realize I hadn't finished that row. Now, I had to go back to that row, line everything up and try to make it look seamless so the customer will never know there had been a mistake. While I was working on this, I had a thread break, so I also show and remind you that it is a...

Have you tried any other rulers and what do you like most about the Natalia Bonner rulers? I tried to google for comparisons but not found anything useful. Appreciate any feedback you can give me.

    I didn’t know that the stretch would shrink the design! How did you know for sure that the inside panto would fit the area without cropping once you got to the bottom?

    • @JuliePettyjohn
      @JuliePettyjohn 3 місяці тому

      That is a great question. I didn't. I cannot recall for certain, but I think I may have cropped the bottom. When I crop the bottom of an inside E2E, I have to be careful to make sure my marking points are falling perfectly within the stitch in the ditch area. It is not as difficult as doing the sides because I am only doing it for one row - the last one. Of course, it would have looked so much better overall if there had been no cropping. To do that, I would have needed to measure the height of the inside and used that in my area rather than my usual 30 or 35 inches. Then I would have subtracting 1/4 to 1/2 inch on that area. Not at all accuracy there but, rather, a guess. I would do that because quilting itself pulls at the fabric and makes the quilt top shorter than it starts out. I would then lay out the entire panto graph. would have to play around with the sizing again to get it to all fit. AT THIS POINT, nothing is certain. As I quilt down and only have three rows left, I would remeasure what I have left and how that compares to the design height size. Rather than waiting until the last row, I want to start at the 3rd row so I can redistribute any size adjustments I have to make so one row won't look different. I may need to readjust the height of the last three rows. I can also add or subtract some gap between rows. Even after all this, I could possibly have to end up cropping. It is tricky but can be done. You just have to be aware that messing with sizes is coming and don't wait till the end row. This is one more GREAT thing about working with border to border, though. It all falls in a straight line, but doesn't look perfectly straight with all the curves to your design, so it does not have to fall perfectly as close to each edge as all the other edges. As long as it is close, your eye will make the adjustments when looking at it to make it all look great. This has been lengthy, but could be another tutorial in itself. Definitely not easy to fit things perfectly within heights. Thanks for asking.

    On cropping the last row on my last quilt the row above dips down into my area that is being cropped and my machine wants to quilt that part that dips down even though my start point was at the new row. I couldnt get rid of it and ended up stitching the whole design on last row to get it right. Has anyone had this issue?

    • @JuliePettyjohn
      @JuliePettyjohn 5 місяців тому

      That is why it is important to first: Crop between start and stop. When you do that, you delete out that previous row that dips down and are only left with what you need. Always crop between start and stop. THEN, draw your area box and crop outside area box, closing ends.

    Thanks Julie for the great video. I always use the drag/drop method - like you do, and it seems to always work for me. I've never tried the method where you put a pin on the side of the quilt. At first I would do the HQ method of drag/drop with the needle in the quilt, but I have made many errors doing it that way. Like others, I've made mistakes with cropping the bottom of a quilt, but I'll put your method on paper, and make sure I follow the steps.

    • @JuliePettyjohn
      @JuliePettyjohn 8 місяців тому

      No matter what thread I use in the bobbin, I first set the bobbin tension. Using a Towa Guage, I set it just below 200, about 190. The way that feels in my hand is that it doesn’t easily glide out. Rather, I have to bounce it ever so slightly to have the thread start coming out of the bobbin. Then I set top tension after that.

    Why couldn’t you just flip the first design row upside down?

    • @JuliePettyjohn
      @JuliePettyjohn 7 місяців тому

      There are always multiple ways of doing things. Experiment and see what you like. I would rather not get into that, myself, because when I flip a row, it usually does not land perfectly horizontally. That means I need to make that row longer and move it to the left or to the right. That will involve more cropping and possibly moving the start point. It just gets to be a lot more things to change to get it to fit perfectly. Additionally, if I then repeat, I have another flipped row. So I would once again have to copy and paste. It feels, (to me anyway) like a lot more work to build a new design than to work with what I have. But you definitely are getting the possibilities of PSP because there are many ways of accomplishing something.

I am fascinated with all the things the Scan N Cut does. I used it to cut fabric for Hawaiin raw edge applique - my first time to ever attempt Hawaiian. (I was told (nicely???) at a retreat that they should have been needle turned instead of raw edge.) The things I love about the quilt are: 1) it is personal to me and 2) I combined some of the things I love: a) quilting, b) foundation paper piecing, c) applique, d) embroidery, and e) used the Scan N Cut, and f) it represented a trip with family. - - You may notice I jump from one topic to another quickly, just like I jump from one machine to another and one art from to another. But I do believe in keeping life fun. Thanks for commenting.
