Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT - test - riding the new Naked with automatic robotized gearbox
Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT has finally arrived for testing. And at this point the questions are: why present an ‘automatic manual’ gearbox? Why remove the gear lever and clutch lever? Why mount this equipment on a sports naked like the MT-09, which was revolutionised just this year? The first answer is that Yamaha had courage, sure of the quality of what it offers. And it is not afraid of the most conservative motorcyclists, who will presumably comment: ‘the system is useless and mortifies the sportiness of the bike’; ‘I can shift very well by myself and I like to use the gearbox’, ‘I might as well buy a scooter’ and so on. More than legitimate comments and objections, let's be clear, which have accompanied in the recent past many attempts at innovation undertaken by companies to make it easier, faster and more comfortable to change gears or manage the clutch. Unanimous, however, is the positive reception for the electronic gearbox (quickshifter), which makes it possible not to use the clutch and speeds up the change from one gear to another, without in any way detracting from the skill of the driver.

mpressive technology, but why introduce it on a hooligan bike like the MT-09? Seems odd as I would think this would be more applicable to the Tracer for touring. My hope is you don't think we ALL want an automatic. Please offer this as an option rather than replacing the manual transmissions, and the traditional clutch lever and foot shifter. I respectfully disagree that this technology will make anyone more "one" with the bike. I believe it will do the opposite, it will disconnect the rider from what is going on and make them more of a passive participant in the riding experience :(

the ONLY ONLY downgrading is the huge restriction on the mid-gears from 1 to 5th gear it is 60HP+ missing by the BME mapping to follow the euro 5 instructions while it is less restriction on the S1000XR so to feel its power you must do the tuning

The funny thing is I currently own a 2020 1000SX and have been in the market for a Tuono V41100. I love how comfortable my 1000SX is but want the aggression of the Tuono has for the once a month trackdays while still being very streetable. I’m in my late 40’s, raced superbikes for 20 years via trackdays and club races, but need more comfort with a competitive edge. The 1000SX can do both wonderfully but lacks a little on track. Still a great bike but definitely would be an apples to oranges comparison. If I had it my way (finance wise) I’d have both. My ZX10R race bike and 1000SX are fully paid off. But getting a Tuono would mean I’d have to sell either the 10R or 1000SX. Decisions decisions.

Hello from China. Owned this bike for exactly 2 weeks. Spitting water and dirt in your face when passing even the smallest of puddles. Sitting position is not comfortable. Rear suspension sucks, even the smallest of bumps you feel perfectly. And last, after 2 weeks of rather herbivore riding, the gearbox died. Full engine replacement (luckily, under warranty from the factory) was required. Sold it right after. If you want Chinese, get a CF. QJ is infamous in China for its reliability.

Made in China! Have we not seen enough of their manufacturing practices to not push their products? They manufacture cars but very little spare parts which is concerning but then couple that with their reputation for questionable reliability and it becomes a disaster waiting to happen. And that's with their cars. The situation is even worse with their motorcycle lines. The reality is, the chinese want to compete with the big names so invest a lot in their R&D but don't respect their customers enough to manufacture sufficient spare parts for their vehicles. Substandard materials used in their products means yellowing headlights and tainted plastic parts in 1-1.5 years, and then you'll be stuck with the ugliest bike on the road (assuming it still runs after 1-1.5 years) and without access to replacemrnt parts. Chinese vehicles are a pass for me. Not going to waste my money on them.

yes there are negatives too.. like comfort seat and rear suspensions are not confortable... and there is a lot of on-off (we tell in the video probably you didn't notice) but this is common on most of cruisers. And considering the price the bike is quite well.

Very pleasant, informative and well-paced comments - the new gen4 SP to succeed my current 2020 SP. Looking forward to getting down on a number of projects again: Tail tidy, weight less 5-7 kgs (-11,5 kgs on my current bike), Pro-tune (get the fulling optimized right - lose the factory limitations), swap the exhaust system for a full aftermarket Akra racing item, braided steel brake lines and uprated track / road brake pads, comfort seat, semi-high windshield (can cruise on the German Motorway at 150-180 km/h all day, makes a signficant difference on the race track (in combo with custom racing leathers and a Pista RR helmet) at top speeds 249 km/h in 5th and 263 km/h in 6th, GPS -8%). Confident to transform the new SP into force on the mountain passes again 😊💥🏁

Fantastic review! Lots of technical insight, you earned a new sub. 😊 I have the 23 MT09 SP... I found the bars far too high and front end a bit on the soft side compared to the rear which felt about right. I've fitted lower bar risers from the old FJ09 which has made a huge difference to front end feel it doesnt have that numb vague feel any more... but I still wish the front end had a slightly stiffer spring ( for my 102kg rider weight) So it's great to have confirmation that I was on the right track due to the fact that Yamaha have done exactly these things for the 24 SP model. Great bike and fantastic vid with good content. Congrats.
