Here's a look at a vintage guitar...microphone?! 🤯
I had long been looking for a soundhole pickup for this Harmony parlor guitar when I stumbled upon this Menorm GP-3 magnetic guitar microphone. It was everything I was looking for; a similar era to the guitar, it didn't permanently modify the instrument and it looked absolutely whacky 😎
This was a new find for me and it is something I would recommend checking out if you have the chance and inclination! 😄 I'd love to know if you have any experience with Menorm pickups; whether you've owned or used one, or if it's something you'll be in the market for yourself. Are you looking for a sliding pickup guitar on a budget? Then look no further! 🤩🎸😂 Sliding pickup guitars have always looked super cool to me 😎 but I've never played or owned one! Howlin' Hub Cab Hullabaloo

Here's an oddball I found in an antique store! 😄🎸 This banjo-esque instrument was so homemade and quirky I had to get it. It reminded me of instruments I've made myself, and seeing as someone had clearly put a lot of effort into making this, I thought it definitely deserved a home 🪕 There's certainly some features to this instrument that perhaps prevent this from being the 4 string Howlin' Hub ...

Here's a demo of a highly modified Epiphone SG Pierced with an Artec QDD onboard Distortion Driver! 😄🎸 The Epiphone SG Pierced is definitely an odd ball guitar 🥴 so I figured it needs an odd ball wiring. After the previous video I wasn't completely satisfied; as much as I love a weird guitar I do like them to be useful and functional! So I decided to get it back on the bench for Round 2 🥊 With ...

Here's a real oddball guitar 😄🎸 I found this Artist brand Telecaster when looking for a beat up guitar to revamp as a project. The pickups stood out to me as they reminded me of the pickups in the Kay K32 Strat model, and as I like the sound of those pickups I thought this was worth a punt! This project allowed me to try out a few techniques and repairs I hadn't experimented with previously. I ...

why do I have this knowledge now, an entire year late
Modding mine with a discovery neck.
Nice! 😎 is it the same scale length? They're great little guitars! 🎸
@@WeirdandWired yep its off one of the discovery series guitars with the built in amp
Oh sweet I hadn't seen those before! A perfect match for it 😌👌🎸
Danny.. Thats a Waaaaaay Cooool effect Brother!
Thanks John! 🙇♂️☎️🎸
I don't know what's going on but I like it! 👍
Amen to that 😂😵💫 thank you for the kind words! 🙇♂️☎️🎸
I wire mine up so they can be used as a output to a speaker OR the voltage is low enough that you can plug it into the front of a BIG amp almost like a pedal. Or into the effects loop. I made a damn business out pf it haha
I certainly have much to learn from you! 😎🙇♂️ I'm definitely keen to try the lower voltage guitar pedal approach! 📻🎸
Amazing
Thank you! 🙇♂️☎️🎸
I've got a natural wood, original 1970's k32 and yes it's heavy. I bought it from ebay about 7 years ago. I can't play a note on any guitar and so my k is just prompt up against the wall doing nothing. I live in North London England if anyone's interested in buying my original 1970's K32.
Nice bit of gear ! Nice t-shirt too!😊
The finest threads! 😎👕🎸
Excellent.... appreciate your help....I'm looking to do the frets in a Diatonic scale.,..so will give the 34 inch a go
Excellent video.... just starting out.... what's the longest neck I can do.... appreciate your help
Thank you for the kind words! 😄 there's no real rules or limitations in the world of diddly bows or cigar box guitars so you can go as long as you like really! 🎸 A longer neck would lend itself well to a lower tuned string. The scale length of a bass is typically around 34 inches from the nut to the bridge (or in this case the bottle!) so you could use that length to tune the string to a Bass Octave I hope this helps, keep me posted with how you get on! 😄 I love this style of project; experimenting until you find what works for you 😎🎸
Wow. I bought a pickup like that about 40 years ago, mid-80s…I don’t recall it being very expensive, there were other mountable pickups at the time that were sleeker, and far more expensive. It came with a special cord, that was grey, or maybe white, with a standard size plug on the amp end, and the little 3.5 earbud jack that plugged into the pickup. I bought an Ovation guitar not long afterwards, so longer had a need for it, and I put it away. I have moved about a couple dozen times since then, and haven’t seen it for a while. It’s around here somewhere…and now I want to find it!!!
Thanks for sharing! 😄🎸 I had wondered how these were priced at the time, good to know that they were reasonably priced! I hope you're able to find it and have some fun with it 🤞😎🎸
This is one of the best and most underrated single coil pickups. If you open it up, its not a P90 its a single coil with (sometimes) an extra magnet in the housing. John Denver was a legendary user of this pickup
Thanks for the info! That's great to know 😄 I did have a look inside this one and it doesn't have the extra magnet, though I was surprised with how clean it was (both the work and how it has stood the test of time!) Very cool to know these were John Denver approved 😎🎸 thanks for sharing! 🙇♂️
@@WeirdandWired i have one, and I am looking for another one for a guitar im building myself. Gonna be a sort of dual p90 thing
Ooh that sounds like a cool build 😎 P90s are my go-to pickup of choice lately 🎸 keep me posted with it!
I got one of these on eBay for £30. I was underwhelmed. I’ve used DeArmond soundhole and archtop pickups for years (they used to be very reasonable). I’ve also played Teisco guitars and pickups and the menorm doesn’t compare. I’ve found this pickup to be very harsh, unbalanced and really noisy. The instruction manual for the menorm pickup says that the magnets are ceramic and I think that’s one of the big differences between it and other old school pickups which used a different type of magnet. Yours sounds great :) but maybe I just need to use a birch guitar and play slide.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this! I did wonder whether I struck lucky with 'a good one' 😅 Sounds like you are a connoisseur of these older pickups! I do like the old Kay/Teisco pickups 🎸 I find they're quite particular - with the right amp sound and style they can be a real vibe, but maybe not the sort of sound I'd choose for an everyday workhorse guitar! Thanks for sharing your insight, I appreciate it! 😎🙇♂️🎸
@@WeirdandWired you can get a good sound out of any pickup, the menorm just seems to have lots of limitations.
Thanks, i have one, I never knew what it was as there’s no maker’s mark on it. It looks exactly the same but with black nobs which probably alters the tone.
Bro what is the sounds in the background
There's some backing music as well as the noisy humming Fender Blues Deluxe amp 😬😂🎸
@@WeirdandWiredthere’s music in the background while you are talking.
It is strange in a great way of how it gives your guitar a resophonic sound. I like it!
I’ve got one of these, cool piece of kit if a little dated
Great to hear you have one too! 😄 does it get much use? The design definitely reminds me of the 1950s vision of the future 😂🤖🎸 a little bit clunky, but charming!
I had one of those back in 1978. I had forgotten completely. Wow! Nice show ❤
Thanks for sharing and for the kind words! I'm glad to hear this brought back the memory for you 😄 do you remember if these pickups were well regarded back then? 🎸 I think it's got a great sound even by today's standards!
@@WeirdandWired back then i was a university student. I used to spend My grant money on guitars and stuff at the start of term. The music shop was small ... We bought what was available. There was no internet ... No one really knew what they were doing! I had mine on a stereotypical Epiphone 12 through a Selmer Zodiac 2x12. It fed back! We really didnt have a clue 😭
That sounds like a good time! 😂 and what a rig 🤩 I'd love to hear the music you were making with all that! 🎸
Carol Turnpike
It looks so much like those Guyatone sound hole pickups.
Or Teisco
Hey there Danny, weirdly, I've never heard of the Menorm GP-3. But now I'm curiously wanting one to play with. Thanks for the video and heads up!
Hey John! I'm glad I've sparked your curiosity 😎🎸 let me know if one comes up on your radar! I definitely bagged a bargain with this one, but I can see why they fetch a bit of money 💸👀 not just for the 'vintage' tag, but for a decent bit of kit 😌 I approve! 🫡
I've picked up Fenders and Gibsons that were real "friday afternoon dogs", you can tell that they were thrown together when the guy just wanted to go home for the weekend. I've also found some real diamonds from no name companies where the stars aligned and an absolute gem of a guitar has been made. The long and the short of it is you have to play all the guitars you can get your hands on and not pay too much attention to the name on the headstock.
I couldn't have said it better myself 🙇♂️ and I'm gonna have to remember the term 'Friday afternoon dogs' 😂🎸
I like the Neck/Mid and Mid positions the most often.
Middle position is definitely underrated! 😄😎🎸
Hey Danny, nice demo. Have a look at my new channel. I created PupTracks to allow pickup sliding and slanting in a discrete way. These are universal tracks that mount under a pickguard and within the body cavity!
I bought one of there on ebay about 6 years ago and always wanted to know more about it, so thanks for the info.
I'm glad it was helpful to you! 😄 they're great guitars 😎🎸
9.5/10 - I had to mark it down because no kill switch.
Understandable 🫡😂 I did try to squeeze one on!
How to plug it in and use it?
Hey! The speaker has been rewired to work as a Lo-Fi microphone, so you can talk/sing/shout into what would normally be the earpiece of the telephone ☎️ it has also been fitted with a 1/4" jack so you can plug it straight into an amplifier or recording interface 🙂🍔
Howdy Danny. This will be my 2nd attempt at leaving a post, apparently UA-cam didn't like me (at that time). Although I've never had a Wesley in my hands, I have a friend that has wanted one for years. SO going to send him your channel's link to this "Flying V", (which I'm sure he'll be drooling over). You know for being some 20+ years old, it's in surprisingly in really good shape (visually). Thanks for showing it off and the upgrades you installed too. Cheers!
Hey John! Thankfully this comment made it through 😂 I'd love to hear what your friend thinks of it! Is there any particular Wesley he's wanted? 🎸 I've only got my hands on a couple but they've both surprised me with the quality for an 'affordable' instrument 👌 then again the acrylic body Wesley guitars can fetch a bit more 💸🤯 Glad you liked the vid! 🙇♂️😎🎸
It was great to see how much you enjoyed your modding project with your Wesley Flying V! And how it brought back early teen-age memories. I picked up a Firefly Flying V earlier this year, so I understand the fun having a "V" when we play our Blues-Rock!--LOL!
Glad you enjoyed it 😄🎸 and great to hear you've had a similar experience yourself with the Firefly V! I definitely get more excited over more affordable guitars 😅 I suppose the bar for expectation is a little lower so it's easier to be wowed 😎 I've not played a Firefly myself but I've seen good feedback on them!
The neck-dive issue is solved by relocating the strap pin from the upper horn to the neck plate. Using a slide-resistant strap also helps.
I just got my first thunderbird and I have realllyyyyy bad neck dive on it, do you have any tips for that ?
Hey! 😄 SeattleSam commented about relocating the strap button to the neck plate and using a slide resistant strap, which is pretty solid advice! The neck dive is pretty common with this design 🙈 but it's a sweet bass. I hope you're enjoying yours! 😎🎸
Karen, it's me, John... 🥺
6:14 tengo la rojo intenso en México
Haha that’s pretty cool bud
Thank you kindly! 😄🎸🙇♂️
YOU WERE ABOUT TO PLAY THE BEST PART
But that's the hard part! 😭😂 maybe I'll learn it for a followup part 2! 🎸✌️
My wife is leaving me
Dang
Stay strong 💪
Nice guitar
Thank you kindly! 😄🎸
I have the demi lovatos one with her sign but now im using it, isnt that crazy?
LOL Danny... You played that perfectly.
Thanks John! I never appreciated just how intricate that music is before trying to learn it 😂😵💫🎸
Can you tell me the height of your bridge after you shaved it please?
How much did you shave of the bridge in mm?
Hey Rupert! 😄 I don't remember exactly how much I took off the bridge, but I believe it was around a good 10mm. This guitar has been an absolute gem ever since! 🎸
@@WeirdandWired Wow, that's exactly a centimetre! How much bridge is left - what's the height now?
The bridge saddle is 11mm at its highest point, where the strings slot in 🙂🎸
@@WeirdandWired Many thanks for the info, will get shaving...
wow the rubber bridge removes all clarity.
Definitely! I find it more noticeable with cleaner tones what a difference it makes 🎸 it certainly makes for an interesting texture! Especially when you put it in the mix with other instruments that do have a crisper clarity 👌
I can see how this could be done on just about any guitar with a little tire inner tube across the bridge. Definitely interesting.
Tire inner tube is a great idea! Maybe the follow-up video should be exploring 'Tone Rubbers' 😎😅🎸 it's definitely a fun mod to play around with, keep me posted if you try out the inner tube idea!
Awesome video - Hypothetically speaking...how much can one pick up a guitar of this nature for usually?
You can get this very guitar on Reverb for £375 + shipping! 😎🎸📦 reverb.com/uk/item/83035831-columbus-335-style-rubber-bridge-guitar-1970s-black-red-burst-hollowbody-modified
Bass and guitar players have been wedging sponges of different thicknesses near the bridge since the 1940s for a muted tone.
Absolutely, and a much easier method than this too! 😂 also the Fender Jaguar string mute 🎸 best of both in a second! Are you a fan of the muted tone?
Hey Danny... Personally, I think it's cosmetics look pretty darn good. But boy does that rubber bridge really mute the sound, but it's certainly an interesting characteristic sound. Didn't much care for the Tremolo with the rubber bridge, but using the Big Muff Fuzz was quite enjoyable ( but I'm weird). Great episode guy!
Hey John! It does have a great shape and look 😎🎸 I suppose this was made before Gibson started coming down hard on the copy cats 😂 Out of the Rubber Bridge mods I've done so far this is my personal favourite; perhaps it's the hollowbody that lends itself well to that particular sound 🤔 I'll have to try it on another to compare! Always love the Big Muff Fuzz 😎 I enjoyed it a lot more on this than I expected 😂 all the best bud ✌️
Same man, you gotta replace the whole bridge
Badass Bridges and Hipshot Bridges are the two names that I see come up often as alternatives for this style of Thunderbird bridge 🎸 I gotta say, I do like the look of them 😎 and definitely look a little easier to work with for a setup 😅
Sounds like a very fuzzy boss ds1, I dig it
Glad you like it! 😄🎸 fuzzy is definitely the word 😎
I own one but haven’t played it in 20 years …. 😅
You should get it back out! 😂👽🎸 do you have fond memories of it? 😄
Yes I’m planning to have it looked after and fixed …. Indeed fond memories 😅
Not only your guitar looks and sounds cool, but your playing is awesome too.
Thank you for the kind words! 🙇♂️ glad you dig it 😄🎸
Now I want one of those... I do know that for the album "Trace" by Son Volt an old film projector was used that was converted to a guitar amp.
Ooh that's great, I'll give it a listen! 😎🎧 I'd love to convert a projector, some of that old gear can make for phenomenonal amps 🤩🎸
