Volcon Brat Wheel Removal and Installation

A while back, I found that my front wheel was out of true when I was recording the Easy Brake Alignment video. I let Volcon know, they sent me a new wheel, and I recorded the removal of the old wheel and the installation of the new one. A lot was happening around that time, so I didn't post that video then, so I am posting it now. Please, visit my website: www.dragontier.com

    Hey, Looking to get a Brat, best looking cafe/moped looking ebike I have found so far but there are really not many videos on it out there. I want to see what I can do to upgrade the top speed and range. I was thinking it looks like an additional battery might fit on that straight bar opposite the included battery. Do you think a sized battery of 14" length x 3.5" width x 4.40" height would fit in that cavity? Or maybe a ball park on average space in there? Thanks

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen 4 місяці тому

      Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, you will have to replace the controller and rearrange the batteries to set it up the way you want it. I've looked into it and it seems pretty pricey compared to what other brands have to offer. At the moment, I am focusing on my Triumph Scramblers, and when I get the chance, I will add a handguard, cassette and wireless gear selector, and a headlight grill to the Brat, so it can feel more like my other scramblers. I am not going to mess with the battery or controller on my Brat.

      I agree with you. I would like to do more to the Brat, but it is so expensive to modify it versus my motorcycle. At this point, there is not enough people demanding more Volcon stuff, so the prices are going to be crazy for anything aftermarket. And Volcon is so focused on their Stag, so I doubt they will put a good chunk of their resources into promoting the Volcon Brat.

    nice video. quick question, do you know if the handlebars can be raised (ie replace with a new stem?) thanks in advance.

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen 6 місяців тому

      The bike frame on the bike is built like a “motorcycle,” so a bicycle stem may not work. You can replace the handle bars or, you may be able to install universal handlebar risers. Droog replaced the handlebars on their Brat. By the way, the handlebars on the blue Brat is designed for an upright riding posture compared to the handlebars that are on the black Brat which are flat for an “aggressive” riding posture. Volcon will sell you either one if you ask.

    What’s top speed

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      It’s a class 2 e-bike, so they have to cap it at 20 MPH. However, in off-road mode, it can go more than 28 MPH when the battery is fully charged. A lot of factors can impact the high speed on Off-road mode. Otherwise, it has no problem maintaining 20 MPH. That is where I keep it. In Florida, bikes on the road, motorized or not, can’t go faster than 28MPH, and they can’t go faster than the posted speed limit on bike trails which is normally 20MPH.

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      My longest ride on the Brat was an hour, and I found the seat to be comfortable. The seat height is shorter than the Zooz by the way. It sits at 30,” and the distance between the rider and handle bars are different between the blue and black Brat. The handle bars on the blue model are higher then the black model. I am 5’10”, and I felt that the blue model feel more comfortable to ride than the black one. I also let friends and family try it out, and some like the seat while others find it uncomfortable. If you are still unsure about making the purchase, find a motorcycle/bicycle dealership that sells them, so you can try one out.

      Common issue with disc brakes on any bike or vehicle. My disc brakes squeal a little on all my e-bikes. They go away then come back. I don’t drive or go out much, so it happens to both my bikes and vehicles. I live in Florida… I wonder if humidity is the problem. A possible is can be misalignment that causes to much pressure on one side of the brakes. I might do a video on how to align them in the future. There is also a bed-ing procedure that is required to be done when the pads or discs are replaced. 1. Start pedaling and accelerate your bike up to a good speed, approximately 20mph. Apply your Rear Brake and squeeze evenly until you are almost stopped (About a walking speed). Use care not to come to a complete stop or to lock up the brake and skid. Doing this can deposit an uneven amount of material on the rotors. You may notice very poor stopping power at the beginning of this process, which is perfectly normal. There may also be excess noise created during this process, which is also normal. 2. Repeat this process between 8 to 10 times. You will know that you are done when you are able to stop smoothly and quickly, you should be able to skid if you were to try. But do not skid until you are finished with this process! 3. When the rear brake is properly bedded in and you are able to stop smoothly and quickly you are finished. 4. Now repeat the process for the Front Brake.

      @@JorgeMejiasBorgen Thanks for the reply. I live in New York and have a similar squeaking phenomenon so I dont think it's related to the humidity, as right now it isn't very humid. I'll save this comment for later as I will eventually replace the brakes eventually. Do you know how to tell if it is misaligned? Because if it is It would be great to know and would solve most of my problems with the brat.

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      @@redeefox2190 I just re-read your first comment. I thought that you replaced the pads. When I was dealing with my brake issue, I found that they were contaminated by something other than soap and water. Brake pads can absorb oil and cause it to break apart and/or squeal really bad, and it is common for the assembler to have grease or oil on their gloves or hands when handling the pads. After you replace the pads, you will have to align them, and then do an in-bed-ing procedure. I need to make a video on how I did it. Hopefully, I will have it up before Wednesday.

      When I was shooting the brake pad alignment video, I found that the right rear pad was closer to the rotor than the left, and there was a lot of brake pad material and dirt embedded onto the rear rotor. After the alignment, I sprayed both front and rear brake pads and rotors with soap and water, and the squeal went away. Now, I need to bleed the rear brakes because the lever became squishy after the alignment. Good thing that I checked. Checking the brakes, chain, suspension, and tires before riding is important.

      I am satisfied with the overall performance of the bike, but it will be difficult to recommend the bike without bias. It is my first e-bike after all. In regards to their customer service, don’t expect the stereotypical call center. When I contacted them about my issue, I found out that their sales team of one handles a lot of the calls, and they only have two people in their warranty department. I believe that it is good that they handle customer service from their home office in Texas and are not outsourcing it. They handled it professionally, and having direct contact with them gave me a sense of reassurance and care. I complained about parts ordering directly from their website, and they told me that they are going to start working on that. They recently added more accessories, especially the one with the retro color scheme that I made for my social media accounts…They told me that the colors scheme for their decal kits have been in the works for a while, but I honestly believe that I influenced their decision a little bit on that one. Their wink in the DM they sent me says it all. Anyway, they are a small startup company that went public, and I believe that they are going to be a well known brand found in motorcycle/powersport dealerships.

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      So off-road mode switches the motor’s output from a Class 2 rating of 750W to Class 3 rating of 1200W. I do know that Class 3 bikes are illegal in some areas around in the US. Before switching the Brat to off-road mode, please check with your local bicycle laws. I will use Florida as an example because I live there: In normal mode, the Brat is a Class 2 bike that can go where any bike can. However, some areas do not allow motorized bikes... That is why you check before you take it there. On the other hand, all bikes are allowed on the street as long as they follow the traffic laws. I doubt law enforcement is going to pull you over on the street as long as you are not doing anything crazy to get their attention. But if you do, make sure both the Class 2 and 750W sticker is not faded, so you can educate them about the bike (insert winky face here).

      In normal mode, torque is adequate. In off-road mode, there is a big difference in acceleration. I can’t really compare it to any other e-bike, because this is the only one any dealership allowed me to test out. I’ve been to a Trek and Cannondale dealership, and both did not allow me to move any of their e-bikes anywhere near the door. To answer your second question, it has a 750W motor, single speed, and weighs 86lbs. When you add the riders weight and incline, it might struggle a bit. I live in Florida, so I’ve had no issues so far going up an incline. Other bikes with a similar setup would probably perform the same. If you add multiple speeds in the mix, it might have better torque to tackle inclines like the ones you mentioned. They are pricy compared to the Brat.

      @@JorgeMejiasBorgen Would you maybe recommend this bike due to its speed, durability, and suspension?

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      @@samapfel_08 Volcon is in the business of making dirt bikes and SxS, so I have to say that both the frame and suspensions are solid. The brakes are Shimano, so I don’t see any major issues there. With less than 50 miles on the odometer, the battery and motor are still a mystery to me. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a cruiser bike that can travel well both simple on- and off-road trail. Speed is adequate on both of these terrains. Also, please keep in mind. It is not a traditional E-Road bike or E-MTB, so the seat cannot be adjusted.

      @@JorgeMejiasBorgen Thanks so much for responding and sorry but i have just one more question. Do you think it could handle wheelies? Ik you are not allowed to probably say that I should do them on the bike but is the seat high enough for them?

    • @JorgeMejiasBorgen
      @JorgeMejiasBorgen Рік тому

      You do not have to apologize for all the questions. I have no problems answering questions. Now, to answer the wheelies question, Volcon states that "riding over stairs, performing wheelies, taking it off jumps or doing stunt/trick-like activities" will void your warranty. Will it be able to handle some wheelies? The shocks probably can, but the wheels are a different story. You can replace the wheels with something more aggressive that would fit 20" X 4" MTB fat tires. Furthermore, the bike is the size of a small adult size dirt bike. The seat height is high enough for my height (5'10"). However, if you are 6 feet or higher, you might have some comfort issues. Oh! And by the way, I did a short speed test video on my channel: ua-cam.com/video/KOipoXoXyLM/v-deo.html

    Interesting that volcon has a small team, reminds me of black labs. Lots of similarities with small companies and quality I must say.

      They started in 2020. Their sales team is ran by one person, and their service department is ran by two people. They outsource a large portion of their business to third party companies. The Brat was designed by Volcon and put together by a local bike company. I can’t get mad at them for something they don’t have direct control of.

    Had brake issues on my BRAT as well. Volcon sent over a new set but since I'm in Cali there are no local dealers so I had to replace them myself. As for the squeaking on the front, mine was caused by the light connection wire rubbing between the frame and the light. Great bike! Love mine as well. Just the little things that should've had a bit more attention to detail on.

      I spoke with the service department, and they informed me that a local third party company assembles the bikes for them before they are delivered. My dad went through the same issue with his recumbent bike. The Trek dealership where I bought the brake pads informed me that it is common to have these issues in the bicycle industry. Everything has been fixed on my bike, and I need to do a follow up video.

      I have no problems with the seat, but two out of four people who sat on it said that it was uncomfortable. I am also trying to figure out the easiest way to add a turn signal. So far, you can’t really integrate one without hacking things up, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
