Making Monitoring Count with Janine McManus
Janine McManus, a wildlife biologist with ECCC, presents her presentation called "Making Monitoring Count: Leveraging long-term datasets and new technology to inform grassland bird conservation.
See abstract: Grassland birds are experiencing some of the steepest population declines of any bird group in North America. To address this continent-wide conservation challenge, science-based decision
support tools are needed to effectively allocate limited resources. Under the Grassland Bird Monitoring Program (GBMP), the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) in Prairie Region collects long-term monitoring data and integrates technologies, such as bioacoustics and the Motus wildlife tracking system, to help meet this need. In addition to monitoring population status and
trends, our program produces large, publicly available datasets, that can be used to inform research as well as address broader questions related to climate change, habitat loss, and land management. This seminar will outline the core monitoring activities of the GBMP at CWS and demonstrate how our program - along with key partnerships- use data to go beyond trend
estimates. This will include examples from projects that identify priority areas for conservation, integrate different data types, and assess the impact of drought on avian species-at-risk.

Population Dynamics & the Conservation of Migratory Aminals: Falling Down, Being Bold& Taking Risks

WildEcol seminar featuring population and conservation ecologist Dr.Tyler Flockhart on Feb.14, 2024. Abstract of the talk: Every second of every day, migratory animals are on the move as they traverse the globe between breeding and nonbreeding areas. These cyclical phenomena result from the behaviour and luck (or misfortune) of billions of individual organisms to maximize their fitness. As indi...
Migration Neuroecology with Dr. Patrick Periera
Переглядів 26Рік тому
Migrant birds prepare differently to fly north for breeding in the spring and for the flight to lower latitudes during autumn, avoiding the cold and food shortages of the Northern Hemisphere’s harsh winter. The molecular events associated with these fundamental stages in the life history of migrants include the differential gene expression in different tissues. Semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris...
Bat Community Ecology with Dana Green
Переглядів 32Рік тому
The evolution of migration has occurred independently in a variety of taxa, and three North American migratory bats are the hoary (Lasiurus cinereus), silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), and little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus). While all three species are migratory, they are not closely related and exhibit differences in wing morphologies indicative of foraging behaviour. In the C...
Quantifying individual and population processes for conservation with Dr. Mitch Weegman
Переглядів 59Рік тому
Quantifying the extent to which demographic rates such as survival and reproductive success contribute to population patterns, and determining environmental drivers of these rates, are fundamental pursuits in ecological research. In part, this is because of the utility of these data to inform conservation plans and management. Study of individual decisions, for example regarding movements, beha...
Managing Wildlife Health: A Provincial Agency Perspective with Dr. Iga Stasiak
Переглядів 96Рік тому
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment is responsible for the management of healthy and sustainable wildlife populations in the province. Adverse impacts to wildlife health pose as increasing challenge to wildlife managers as changes to landscape use, climate change, and emerging infectious disease impact the vulnerability and resiliency of wildlife populations to the many stressors they face...
Promoting sustainable agriculture through pollinator health research with Dr. Sarah Wood
Переглядів 37Рік тому
Since its inception in 2014, the Honey Bee Health Lab at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine has been investigating the role of sustainable apiculture practices in supporting ecosystem health. Specifically, we explore the spread of antimicrobial resistance among bacterial pathogens of honey bees, the effects of pesticide exposure on pollinator health, and the value of pollination service...
Saskatchewan Bat Monitoring with the Nature Conservancy, Presented by Kristen Martin
Переглядів 402 роки тому
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) conserves and manages land across Saskatchewan. To better understand the bat species present on their lands, NCC has recently been monitoring bats through both acoustic recording and direct tracking methods.
