This episode felt like a full-blown epic movie.

Liam has spoken about how Vax getting the killing blow on Thordak was cathartic for him. Throughout the campaign Liam's mother was dealing with cancer and eventually passed away. Liam said that when Vax killed Thordak (who had killed Vax's mother), it was like a manifestation of being able to kill the cancer that had killed his mother.

Thanks for the reaction. Look, it was never going to easy to kill Thordak. But it is especially hard losing Kashaw. He was a great character. He and Zahra were highlights from the campaign.

Oof. The ONE TIME Kiki lets her guard down and doubts her past suspicions… and she’s shown that her distrust was justified by almost being killed by her nemesis. She is NOT going to let this stand. Also, Vax getting the kill on Thordak, like the paladin of vengeance he is. What a ROAR from Liam.

I don't know if it is poor taste. When they were carrying Percy in the coffin without his glasses I was transported to "My Girl". "Where is Percy's glasses! He can't see without his glasses!"

The stone lid sliding over Percy is the moment that really gets me in the feels. Just the finality of it.

“I don’t want to be alone tonight, do you?” “I haven’t wanted to be alone most nights.” That’s an iconic exchange between them from the campaign, and I’m happy that they included that here as they mend their relationship, with Vax learning from his sister’s tragic mistake and choosing to open his heart. Because joy today IS worth pain tomorrow, if it means finding love and comfort in the wake of tragedy. Also, I’m glad that it’s Kiki that initiated their second kiss. She’s come a long way from when we first met her in Season 1. And she's become the confident one in their relationship!

Little easter egg, the dead guy in the cell was patterned after Taliesin Jaffe.

I would say the only villain who wasn't humanized was Umbrasyl the black dragon. Thordak was humanized by showing his care for his eggs his quite literally the best still living father in the series so far

I wouldn't really call Keyleth, Cass, or Vex "fake outs." Keyleth and Cass were dying. In DnD terms, they were making death saving throws, and were brought back by Vax/Scanlan and Keyleth, respectively. Vex straight up died. Had Vax not made his deal with the Matron, Vex would've stayed dead (assuming Pike and Kash weren't able to resurrect her).

6:16- Apparently Vex can breathe under water but can't hear underwater

There have been no death fake-outs. Dead and dying are two very distinct things in DnD and this show takes that distinction very seriously. When you're dying any healing can bring you back but once you're dead, healing can't do anything for you and they treat resurrection magic as difficult and impactful. So Cassandra and Kiki where only dying in S1 and Vex straight up died but they were able to resurrect her with Vax's deal with the Matron.

Fun fact: Ripley's stats in the game were exactly the same as Percy's, a perfect nemesis. She's got Orthax giving her extra speed here in the animation, but she's the same dex-based fighter build. clever, fast, and hard to hit. This episode is a masterpiece, it gets me in the feels every time. I always tear up when Percy falls, the lost look on his face. Like he's worked so hard to get to the point where he can reach out a hand to Ripley, can put aside vengeance for real and try to find a better path. He's BECOME the better man Vex believed he was, and ...it failed. And he's alone as he dies, and it just breaks my entire heart.

Vex’s death in Season 2 was NOT a fake-out. She legit DIED. And Vax had to become the Matron’s champion to get her back. And the thing about Pike's blood is new to this storyline. As is Ripley getting away; she actually met her end here in the campaign. As of now, the story has gone off the map.

Hopefully we won’t be waiting too long for the next episode, as it HAS been a while.

Yeah, that episode title was a bit of a bait and switch for those of us who watched the table play. S3 is telling the story in a different way and I am enjoying it.

You're right about Chateau Shorthalt. It is based on the spell Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion which Scanlan had in the campaign. And only serving chicken is canon as well. And there's a quick cameo that references a big moment from the campaign, IYKYK

Scanlan grabbed the key from Umbrasyl hoard at the end of the last episode of season 2.

Scanlan grabbed that key last episode of S2. In the actual play campaign whenever Fenthras makes a kill it grows a tree. Lot of changes in this season but they are making them work and I have been thoroughly enjoying not knowing what exactly is coming next.

“…survivor of Emberhold…” Yup, that is absolutely a callback to the Underdark arc, as Vox Machina rescued Kima from the duergar stronghold of Emberhold. And it was the Shalesteps that got wiped. And Allura is a wizard, specifically of the school of Abjuration, thus why she specializes in defensive and protective spells.

I’m so glad that this episode was a Kimallura-centric episode. After all, they’ve always been so close to Vox Machina that they might as well be ancillary members. And of course, the finishing blow to Vorugal was also done by Vex in the campaign, albeit they changed it a bit for LOVM where it’s Keyleth assisting her. as for next time… Chateau Shorthalt… and another very big story swing.

If they make the gods all shitty, it will do a grave disservice to the original campaign. There, the Everlight was severely weakened when nearly all her followers were killed due to the betrayal of Asmodeus, who reigns in the Hells, but she was always kind and respectful. Zerxus was lying to himself all through his history, but it wasn't an official question so there was no penalty. His own hubris and arrogance was part and parcel to starting the Calamity. And the gods below wanted to wipe out the mortals, and the gods above didn't want that. It's like those idiots who say "both parties are the same". a bit ironic, all your Vecna talk at the start - who did we last hear say "We are his blood"? Back in season 1?
