DIY Mistletoe - Decoration Idea - Glass upcycling Bottle Art

The idea to make mistletoe seeds with hotglue came to me while I made my dragonfly project. I love those delicate branches and their symbolic meaning (health, luck and protection for lovers). So I decided to model them with paperclay on the glass as if they grew around the bottle. The colour combination of yellow, crimson and orange reminds me of an early sunrise and amber. I have one I'm removing paint from now. Once I get the paint removed how will I restore luster and shine? Will I need to just add an oil or is there something else I need to do?

    • @craftingsparks
      @craftingsparks 3 місяці тому

      Hi @beachburlington . If your figure is made of spelter or another metal base it depends on of how much of the original covering paint is left. If you are lucky and what you find only has some damages in the surface I would try to restore those spots with acrylic colours. The figure in the video unluckily had nothing of the original coating under those horrible thick paint layers. So I had to remove everything down to the pure spelter core. Then I painted it with a prime coating which is especially meant for metal including spelter. That primer is a bit thick and I had to thin it down a bit to get a thin layer. You can see at 1:44 how it looked like with that primer. After that I used acrylic colours to achieve that bronce like appearance which it originally once had. I got good results by mixing brown with gold and a little black. For the flower parts I mixed a light green with some gold. That kind of shimmering green was quite popular during the Art Nouveau era. The acrylic colours I used give a decent glimmer so no additional finishing coat was necessary. The black and brown I used are from a local hardware store www.bauhaus.info/buntlacke/swingcolor-buntlack-acryl/p/27261790 so nothing special😊. And for the gold just a well pigmented gold acrylic colour from crafting supplies should do. I am not a pro conservator but I hope this still helps. I wish you a beautiful crafting time with your project 🍀

    Beautiful! You are so talented and crafty. Question: what is the black paint you use to outline? and can I use something else - like permanent marker. I have issues with my hands and it would become just a black wing. But I would like to try. Can always start over - right? Already printed my pages! I Love this Idea. Thank You!

    • @craftingsparks
      @craftingsparks 3 місяці тому

      💕Thank you so very much!😊 For the black outlines I use a black acrylic colour I bought in a local hardware store. It´s nothing special but it is liquid enough to draw very fine lines and well pigmented at the same time. The colour can be used for wood, metal and craft projects in general. But I am sure if you use a fineline permanent marker you can also get beautiful results. And even if the pattern is still too dense for the liner just leave out parts of the pattern to fit your project. It takes longer the way I draw the lines with brush and liquid colour but I love the lacquered effect and density. But as I said I am sure you can create beautiful dragonfly wings with a fine permanent marker too. I wish you lots of fun with the project and many beautiful dragonflies.🍀

      😍 Thank you very very much! I have to admit I am a bit addicted to painting with glass colours ... the effects and light intensity are so lovely. Most of the times I use solvent based glass colours (always keep a window open because of the solvent fumes). Especially when I have to paint bigger and curved surfaces I use those colours. The water based ones worked fine for my dragonfly project, too because they are so small. But it seems to me the water based colours are less intense and more runny. But on the other hand you can wash out the brush with water and the fumes while painting are less intense.😊🌼
