Rod Ridge Farm
United States
Приєднався 7 вер 2014
Rod Ridge Farm is nestled among the rolling hills of Appalachia in southeast Ohio. After being an instructor at Old School Survival Boot Camp, I was inspired to launch a UA-cam channel by my cousin and best friend Jessie - who loves to learn, fail, and succeed along with me on the farm.
On the Rod Ridge Farm Channel I will be showcasing real life on a family farm. I plan to share it all folks, the good, the awesome, the funny, the serious, the beauty, and the dirty ugliness which are part of this lifestyle we love.
While the Rod Ridge Farm Channel will be showcasing all aspects of life on the homestead, I will focus heavily on the areas of farming that I love the most: gardening, canning and food preservation, raising livestock, crafting,- and any other farming tasks that help prevent me from doing boring indoor domestic chores.
You will often see my family in the videos, because we are all in this together, farming is our way of life.

Our turkey is for Thanksgiving!
The turkeys on Rod Ridge Farm have been living a good life. The time has come to get one ready for Thanksgiving. Cruz had to do the culling for me(not shown but cut off the head). I struggled to dip her big ol body in the hot water to pluck but made it work. She dressed out around 12 to 15 pounds, I was finally able to get a close number on the scale. #homesteading #selfsufficient #thanksgiving #turkey #farmtotable

Riding Lelia's new horse!
Переглядів 577 годин тому
A girl had horse fever no matter her age. In this video, a bunch of us take turns riding Lelia's new quarter horse, Brandy. There are definitely different skill levels, and some of us needed help getting into the saddle, but we did it. Now, everyone who rode wants a horse of their own. I ain't rode in so long my short ride left my legs sore for three days. #homesteading #kidsoutdoors #horses #h...
Pork leaf fat vs. back fat!
Переглядів 24016 годин тому
Here at Rod Ridge Farm, my favorite fat to cook with is pork fat. This is so easy to render down and all natural. Nothing needs or gets added to this fat. There are two types of fat in s pig, leaf fat, and back fat. If you bake, then the leaf fat will come in very handy as this type of fat is fantastic for pastries. Either way, you can't go wrong when rendering the pork fat, which is called lar...
Planting garlic in the new raised bed!
Переглядів 3521 годину тому
Here at Rod Ridge Farm, I try my hand at garlic every year. Usually, my harvest is successful. This year, I am trying a few new techniques with growing the garlic. I am always learning new things as I grow, and I want to share that with you. #homesteading #selfsufficient #garlic #fallplanting #raisedbeds
The making of a raised garden bed!
Переглядів 150День тому
This year on Rod Ridge Farm, I want to do some of my gardening in a new section and in raised beds. I am reusing an old water trough that leaks as a raised bed. A rule of homesteading is to use what you have, and sometimes you get lucky, and it works perfectly. I filled the bottom of the tub with random items and then with soil. #homesteading #selfsufficient #gardening #raisedbeds #usewhatyouhave
Transplanting berry bushes!
Переглядів 3714 днів тому
Here at Rod Ridge Farm, we love our berries. In the fall is when the wineberries, a type of raspberry, need to be transplanted. I went to one of our picking patches and dug up a bunch of the plants. They have been planted at our farm now. It takes three years for the wineberry to produce fruit. #homesteading #selfsufficient #berry #falltransplant #foodforest
Making chicken salad from home butchered chicken!
Переглядів 2314 днів тому
The way we run things at Rod Ridge Farm is with minimal waste. I recently butchered chickens for a class and brought the meat back home. I baked the chicken for dinner, and it was delicious. After we finished eating the chicken, I used the rest of the meat and made chicken salad. I am the only one who eats chicken salad at my house, so I make it how I like it. Then, the carcass will go for maki...
Family Fall feast and games!
Переглядів 5714 днів тому
One of the favorite Rod Ridge Farm events of fall is having our family fall festival. We cook a big pot of veggie soup over the fire with our fresh canned veggies. We also play lots of fun games with the kids, decorate pumpkins, and just relax and enjoy each other's company. The kids always have fun! #homesteading #kidsoutdoors #fallfun #veggiesoup #familytime
Making flaky pie crust!
Переглядів 7714 днів тому
This is the go-to pie crust for everything pie crust at Rod Ridge Farm. This is a simple and tasty recipe. The lard is what makes the crust. I use this crust for pies, pot pies, and fry pies. It is perfect. #homesteading #selfsufficient #piecrust #recipe #flakycrusy
Making homemade egg noodles!
Переглядів 2121 день тому
This is a simple recipe, and the noodles are delicious. My mom gave me this recipe. The trick to the egg noodle is the type of egg. Farm fresh is best , the rich yolk makes them. These can be made and frozen for later use. I'm not sure about dehydrating them, I may try that. The next thing for your noodles is the stock. Homemade is the way to go. #homesteading #selfsufficient #eggnoodle #farmto...
Making and canning applesauce!
Переглядів 35121 день тому
One of the Rod Ridge Farm favorite winter snacks is applesauce. This is a one ingredient list of APPLES. I used two different varieties, and this applesauce is delicious. You can add flavors such as cinnamon, but I don't. That can be added as a personal preference when eating. My Amish neighbor taught me to do applesauce this way, and it is much easier. #homesteading #selfsufficient #canningand...
Meet our newest pig, Chucky!
Переглядів 47721 день тому
In the life of farming, Rod Ridge Farm is not an exception, you lose livestock. We had to get a new pig to buddy with Pearl because Opal got very sick and had to be put down. I tried to rehabilitate her for several weeks, but the damage was done. Chucky is from the group of babies I videoed a while back. Now we can all watch him grow together. #homesteading #selfsufficient #pigs #farmlife #live...
Making apple butter!

Here at Rod Ridge Farm, we have been gifted with a lot of apples. With those apples, I will make a lot of different things. In this video, I make apple butter. I have never made a large batch before. Maybe next year I'll be able to do it over a fire, but for now, this will work. This was then water bath canned to be shelf stable. #homesteading #selfsufficient #canningandpreserving #applebutter ...

Assembling the food strainer to make tomato juice!
Thanks for this one! I see chickens being done but never the struggles of a turkey.
Love it!
Very similar to our royal stove
Thanks for this one!! Now I know what exactly to ask for at the butcher if they will sell it to me.
I am hoping to get about a year's worth from this batch. Honestly, the lard is reused a lot before I have to toss it(and then it goes over the dog food)
@ great idea for dog food! I really do appreciate all your videos!
Great job! Good ole chicken compost, I put that stuff on everything lol
Yes, exactly!
Love repurposing things!! Wish I had one of those! Great job.
We tried to use it as a waterer but it wouldn't stop leaking, raised bed was the next best thing!
I have got to find some wine berry bushes!!
Sooooo Sweet!!! 🐷❤️😍🥰🤗😁 Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland!🐖😘
Donkey’s just soak up the love. 💗
He was. I just loved him and wanted to bring him home with me
Love chicken salad!
I think the grapes just make it!
I have never been able to make pie crust! Thanks, I will try again soon. Great job! 🥧
This one is easy. Be sure not to go crazy with the lard, melt 1/3 a cup and that is all. Otherwise, it will taste greasy and have a weird texture
I really need to get some lard!! Trying to get leaf fat to make my own but not having any luck. I can use any pork fat but it won’t be WHITE, correct? I have made ghee and tallow so far.
You can, but I have found the taste to be a little off with less pure lard. Honestly, use what you like, though.
Love making noodles and dumplings. I prefer flat dumplings and the guys like drop dumplings so we alternate. 😅
I like a drop dumpling too
Haha love that name😅 he will do fine there. Maybe you should get more 😊
He has escaped with the help of Pearl about 5 times now. I think I have it rigged up to hold them now. Crazy pigs
He’s a cutie!
Now that's a cute piggy....how you gonna eat him?
Well, right now, he is lose so that makes the decision a bit easier +
Well, right now, he is lose so that makes it an easier decision.
Looks fantastic!! I have made plenty of apple sauce but never apple butter. If I can get local apples I will have to try it! Hope you get them all used up!!
I'm still working away at them. Plenty of apple products for tbe pantry.
Looks good!
Thank you
Do you not own a rake?
I do, this wasn't at my house thougj
They make these things you can use that allow you to gather large amounts of leaves at the same time while standing up.
Lol, if I was doing the pile I would have raked it
Really good idea.
Thank you. Good way to use the onions up before they start to rot.
If onions hurt your eyes, wear goggles. It helps.
All I have are the purple swimming ones. Not sure if I could have seen good enough
I have wanted to do this but like you, it is too damp and cold here to do it outside.😢😅 Come spring I will be doing some.
I think after a bit we were nose blind because it didn't bother me that much
@@sarahrodriguez5404😆🙃
Great idea!
I'm excited to have them!
Super cute! Love her little voice. Reminds me of my daughter when she was younger.
Thank You. She is so curious and loves to help me
Fried cabbage is fantastic!! As a kid I hated cooked cabbage of any kind. As an adult I live it! I do it with smoked sausage or kielbasa.
I did too. Now I love it. It is so good with smoked sausage or kielbasa that is our go-to for meat with it usually
Those things just sneak up on you!! I won’t ever touch a reaper, that is just too hot!!
His face when it started to burn told it all
Too funny. When are you going to post the video after he takes a big bite of the Carolina Reaper Pepper?
He said not goin to happen!
This is what’s keeping me from making sauerkraut. The fear of just growing mold. Lol. I am on the lookout for a crock now. 🤞🏻🤞🏻I can find one.
For sure. I'm going to hopefully get more cabbage and try again in my crock
My least favorite job I did on the farm!! We raised meat birds, 500-1000 at a time. It was an all day job cleaning the chicken tractors. Great job!
Oh wow! That's a lot of chickens and a lot of cleaning
Cool apple picker!
Thank you. I got it off amazon and it is very handy!
I am so jealous! I wish I didn’t have to buy apples. No where near me to pick them. I am sure they will be delicious.
Apples are so expensive too
@@sarahrodriguez5404 yes!! My family eats them like crazy too.
How long you let it sit before use?
6 to 8 weeks. My mom swears by it. She already got more from me for this season
We just picked up an old Andes wood cook stove yesterday. We have a wood stove for heat, but not for cooking. I've wanted one for as long as I can remember, and now we have it. We will devise a summer kitchen for it, so it's not installed or working yet. I've learned alot in the last few days, looking things up online. I can't offer you much on yours, but I think you know a good deal already. Have fun!
Thank you. It's always exciting getting one step closer to your dreams!!
cmsc441 hw7 people i see you
Harvest all you can and keep the seed to plant more then have a larger harvest in the next year or two?
They are actually invasive, and my husband cut the one on our property down. I was angry, but I have plenty to harvest from that's not on my property.
@@sarahrodriguez5404 good to know!
So you start the timer after the weight starts jiggling? Is it terrible to start the timer as soon as you set the weight in the vent stem? I think I did that to my chili😮
It should be after the weight jiggles because you know it is at the needed pressure then. Honestly, I wouldn't discard the canned chili. If you cook it hot enough, you kill any botulism spores that may be present, 250 degrees, I believe. May have to pressure cook it to get there but better than wasting.
This is such a great use of what some would throw away. I have 1 pint of powder. Use it for flavor and thickening.
Definitely!!!
Can’t wait to make this! I love it and no one else will touch it. I have ACV and pickles going now.
Awesome. I eat it straight out of the jars. Getting ready to start my ACV this weekend!
@@sarahrodriguez5404 me too! With stuff or by itself, love it.
Looks delicious, thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I can't wait to taste it!!
@@sarahrodriguez5404 I bet!!
Looks great! Nice job 😊
Thank you. Can never go wrong with whole tomatoes in the pantry.
Hi, new to your channel! Great job! I have canned ketchup before, and it takes forever to cook down.
Welcome! I appreciate you watching. I was hoping 5o do ketchup this year but have run our of umph
@@sarahrodriguez5404 I understand! I am putting a video up tomorrow of starting to close down the garden!
What is your channel? I'll check it out

Tomato paste takes forEVER!! Love it but dang!!
Exactly!
If you are going to be making sauce or puree, freeze them! Wash and Core them just like with baking and into freezer bags. Thaw them in a strainer over a bowl, when thawed or mostly thawed pinch skins right off. No need for the oven heating up the kitchen.
Awesome. I'll try that too! Thank you!
New storage looks great. Have you considered putting strapping at the front and back of the shelves with your wonderful canned products. It would be a shame if they were nudged and fell and strapping might save your efforts from such accidents.
I have not, but I will definitely see if I can rig something up. Some jars are right at the edge, so it'd be a good thing to have
This is the one I have. Used it today making salsa. I actually put it together wrong! You just showed me that. Lol.
Lol, gkadbI could help
Boa tarde Deus continue sempre te abençoando 👍🙌
Boa tarde tamo junto e misturado 👍🙌
Wow! That’s crazy how bugs attacked the green and left the purple. Who would have guessed. I haven’t made sauerkraut yet. I am the only one that eats it. Is it in your cookbook?
I love sauerkraut! It is in my book. I'm going to do a video when I make it
@@sarahrodriguez5404 that will be great! I will look it up and be ready!
So beautiful!
It really was. I couldn't explain it
