Hi,
We're Ritch & SJ (Sarah-Jane to give me my Sunday name!)
So what's our channel all about?
A bit of this and a bit of that we'd say! We live a simple life in the British countryside that we love sharing with our viewers. You can see what we get up to in the quest to sort out our plot of land, it's always an adventure!
Along the way we'll go on the odd road trip and take you along for the ride. We're a creative duo so there will be a few makes thrown in there for good measure, be it food, crafts, clothing or some sort of construction; and if we buy anything for our home or garden we'll review it so you have an unbiased view.
We're a bit like a countryside lifestyle magazine but on film. So like we said, you'll find a bit of this and a bit of that on our channel after all "Variety is the spice of life!" and we'd love you to come along on our journey.

Restoring a Mid-Century Modern magazine trolley
SJ flies solo on this one. Refinishing a recent purchase from a local auction.
This Danish made mid-century magazine trolley needed a little refreshing to bring it back to its former glory. To begin, I carefully examined the trolley for any damage, taking note of scratches and worn areas that needed attention. After cleaning it thoroughly to remove any dust and grime, I decided on a suitable wood finish that would revive its natural beauty. I lightly sanded the surfaces to create a smooth base for the new finish. It was essential to work in the direction of the grain to prevent any additional damage. Once sanded, I wiped down the piece to eliminate dust particles. For the finish, I opted for a hard wax oil, which not only nourishes the wood but also enhances its color and grain. Applying it with a soft cloth, I made sure to coat every surface evenly, allowing it to soak in before wiping off any excess. After allowing the trolley to dry completely, I took a moment to admire the transformation. The once dull piece now had a rich, warm tone that showcased its mid-century design beautifully.
As usual, please comment, like, and subscribe if you want to see more content like this; it's the only way we know it's worth the time and effort. Thanks, Ritch & SJ.

Hi and welcome to this weeks video, where we take a 1940s chest of drawers, we found at the road side and restore it. We discovered in this renovation that it was a piece of CC41, Controlled Commodity, utility furniture. You can see more about this here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CC41. Upcycled - Lap tray from a pallet
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 роки тому
Recently it was SJ's Dad's birthday, so we decided to make him an upcycled lap tray. As luck would have it we'd recently found some interesting looking timber from an old pallet and thought it would be perfect for this project. This really was a true upcycling project, pallet wood, an old shirt, Polystyrene beads from an old bean bag and leftover fabric from a recent chair project.Think the res...
Upcycled - Greenhouse from an old shed

Welcome to our lastest video. Bit of an epic one for us, 20 mins long, it took over a couple of weeks to complete the build and it's also taken a while to edit! So, we needed somewhere to sow and propogate seedlings and a place to grow on tomatoes and other tender plants. We also needed somewhere to protect plants over winter. We knew that this one wouldn't be our permenant greenhouse, so decid...
Upcycled - Making a large planter from scrap materials
Переглядів 2104 роки тому
Welcome to Ritch & SJ, This week we need to make a new garden planter for our fig tree. As usual we'll be creating something, rather than buying new. Upcycling whatever we can find to create something with character and a certain style. This is part of our ongoing patio project, where we aim to use as much, second-hand, reclaimed, repurposed and recycled materials as possible. I hope you enjoy ...
Just for fun - A visit to SJ's Terrible Trimmers
Переглядів 624 роки тому
Welcome back! Today we dip our toes into the world of hair styling. Ritch needed a hair cut but in this time of Covid 19 all the hair salons are closed so it's been left up to me to do the honours. Big gulp I hear! You'd be right, I've only ever trimmed the very back of his hair before with trimmers and that was years ago. So as you'll see I'm very out of practice. I hope you enjoy this video, ...
Making - A Craftsman style clock with stained glass panel
Переглядів 9354 роки тому
Welcome to Ritch & SJ, This week I ‘m making a Craftsman style clock for a birthday present. I'll be repurposing leftover oak from our home rennovation and reusing a clock mechanism from an unwanted gift. Can we call this one upcycling? We think so, as we are giving the oak a new purpose as it was originally cut as a door lining and skirting! I'll also be making a decorative panel from stained ...

Quick and easy Plastic free gift decoration
I have done the same to an identical chest of drawers which was also put out on the street to take away! I had to replace the top plywood, which had been damaged by water and also had something heavy dropped on it, but thanks to B and Q cutting sheets of plywood to measure if you need, that was very easily done. An interesting thing was one of the drawer bottoms was a bit short and didn't reach its slot in the side timber - maybe in wartime it was use that or nothing? I didn't replace it, but put in an extra baton to support the end firmly. I felt it was a little bit of wartime history.
Great craftsmanship. You have special skills to craft that tile at the bottom. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you, appreciate the kind words
Great job. Background music is a little loud though.
excellent
Grotesque..ghastly...hideous NOISE.. not MUSIC..spoilled it.
I love it
Well done! Greetings and I invite you to my place
Oven is great, the pizza is ok :D
Great build and effort. Your biggest mistake is not adding floor insulation. Your oven floor will cool down very quickly while cooking your pizza. I made the same mistake while building mine and I had to add insulation to the floor after finishing my oven.
Thanks for the feedback. The bricks on the base are actually fire bricks, so do provide some insulation. We actually built this a while back and have been using it for a few years now, with no problems. If anything it probably gets too hot. Curious though, how did you add the insulation afterwards?
Nice job, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I watched all 4 episodes. Nice work guys! I want one. Unfortunately I don’t have a good space on my yard to do this. Definitely in my next home though
Thanks for watching!
Looks Great, Hungry now 🥃 👍 😊

They look cool. How do you clean them out?
Just unscrew or unfasten the laces
Still watching with interest 🍺 👍 😊
One note: If you put a metal rod rebar into the place where high temperature will be, it's gonna expand due to thermal expansion of metal and crack the concrete. I wouldn't recommend that.
Thanks for the advice but, if you watch the next video you’ll see there is a layer of fire bricks above the concrete. It’s not cracked in three years!
Nice. No music would be even better.
🍺 👍 😊
How did this turn out?
It was okay, it did work, although felt strange as there was no bubbles. It was a lot of effort for the amount produced. Certainly not time efficient. But a good exercise to see if it could be done.
Hello from TEXAS USA 🤠
very creative! but i cringe when you cut hole in pan, cuz now hole saw gonzo...
It was a bi-metal hole saw, and I have a spare 🙄
@RichardandSJ - I'm refinishing my Granfathers 100+ yo oak rolltop - Question, do I use a "ROTARY" sander on the oak panels? If so, how do I prevent circular scratches? I'm using a belt sander on the large surfaces and that seems to work great. The difficulty I have is on smaller panels where the belt sander is too large. I appreciate any advice you have! GREAT VIDEO!
Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes you could use a random orbital sander, but keep the pressure light to prevent the scratches, and work up your grits. Scrappers are a good alternative to remove old finishes. You can sand by hand, just make sure you’re following the grain. Don’t forget to leave some the marks and scratches, it’s not necessary to make to factory fresh, as it’s a piece of your family’s history. Good luck Ritch.
Very artistic
Some brilliant ideas here and so good not to use plastic. Thank you for all the tips.
You are so welcome!
What product did you use on the wood ?
If I remember correctly, it was a hard wax oil by Treatex and a Fiddles polishing wax.
Oh yeah. Way cool 😎🫶🏻
great show great times great people great memories great vid
Thank you for the great idea ..... I have one or two that my boss wants to throw away so now I'll save them.
Good for you!
What an interesting piece of furniture, Lovely work! Nice to see you Guys back! 🥃 👍 😊
Thanks, we know it’s been awhile! Hoping to get more videos up soon 🤞
Did you use a stripper on the apron the rolltop part of the rolltop desk?
Yes you can use the paint stripper, but be careful not to damage the webbing behind the slats.
Great job all, love them roll top desk's, have a nice day !!!. Brian West Mid's !!!.😀😀👍👍.
Remember that the birds need to be able to get up to the exit hole, or they will be trapped. Don't assume that they can fly or jump up to the hole.
That's good point
Still great idea can't wait to start building with my dad
SORRY MUSIC TOOO LOUD and bird don't like burnt wood ...
their nice, but how do you clean them out without taking them back apart?
These are DOPE - subscribing. So Creative
and where did you get that sketch book/book cover???
I love your sketches!!
Omgah!! I LOVE THE BOOTHOUSE! my brother has kept all his old hiking and work boots. He said he didn't know why...like 20 pair I'm going to get them and make these. We are having unusually harsh winter this year. Thank you so much! You are the greatest! From South Carolina, USA
That's awesome I wanna make this to can't wait to make bird house with my Dad
I wonder if the wind will blow the shoe tounge over the opening. Why not tie the laces on both sides of the toungue to prevent this?
My husband and I have just inherited a desk identical to this. It's been in the family for 3 generations and I would love to get it restored. We are in Yorkshire in the UK, is this something you would do?
Hi Kirsty, although we don’t do this as a service, no formal training, it is something we could do. We’re coming into a very busy period for us, so wouldn’t have any availability until at the earliest April next year. We’d also need to see the item before quoting, if you are interested please DM us on Instagram @ritchandsj. Thanks
@@ritchandsj3333 done :)
Where can I find the recipe please
The recipe is in the description box
Hi, does this work well cleaning dishes? Thanks
It cleans dishes & cuts through grease but as it doesn’t create suds I felt I had to add more to the water than conventional washing up liquid.
where did you find the lock?
Good work.
I just bought an antique oak roll-top desk almost identical to this one. Paid $300 for it and it is pretty worn out but very repairable. this sucker is heavy as H*** :) Very excited to get on with this project. I wanted to give it an updated look, but I'm noticing that even the brand new ones are typically stained, not painted.
A master carpenter! Loved your finished greenhouse; much better than all glass. Quality control officers are just like the real ones in Montana, USA!
A bird house called CAT! LOL.... Brilliant idea, brilliantly put together.. Well done
thanks for the inspiration. cheers!
