    To be honest, I was never really interested in the ESC.🙈 As a child, this was exciting, especially since it was one of the few occasions when we young people were allowed to stay up until midnight.😹 Well, especially in the last few years it's been interesting to see which countries have joined forces; there was definitely a certain group that had obviously been passing points to each other for a few years. There were even rumors that they were conspiring specifically against Germany.🙄 But well, German songs really weren't that good in recent years...🤦🏻‍♂️ This year, the German song was initially given quite a good chance - until a few other countries presented their songs, since then we can count ourselves lucky again if we don't come last again.🤭 But according to the classics you listed: I have to admit, I don't know some of them. But I can completely agree with you, especially when it comes to Abba, Cliff Richards and Bucks Fizz. And “Safe Your Kisses for Me” is still a catchy tune from my childhood.😄 Time will tell whether the modern, current pieces will one day also be considered classics. The German Lena Meyer-Landrut (ESC 2010) is a bit like that. Her victory was completely unexpected. But without that fake English accent it probably wouldn't have happened...😜😅 In any case, we have something to look forward to tonight - well, after the Netherlands were apparently kicked out for unpleasant incidents...😒

    • @PopMonkeyPodcast
      @PopMonkeyPodcast Місяць тому

      I like your take on it and I thought the German entry this year was really good (I heard about the Netherlands but they've been a bit sketchy here with the details on the news 🤔). We did ok with the jury votes and got a big fat zero in the public vote 🤣 The Lena Satellite song stood out and deserved to win in 2010 and who doesn't like Nicole's song 'A Little Peace'? You have a decent record for ESC! If you got a chance to see WIndows 95 Man last night, I have to admit that it made me laugh and reminded me of how Eurovision used to be - a bit silly but for the right reasons! A nice winner though so all is good in the end 😀

      @@PopMonkeyPodcast I'm very sorry, I'm a little late again. Well, the ESC didn't used to be so much fun in former times. When the first really funny songs were performed, it was basically a scandal; people said they weren't taking this song contest seriously anymore. But the ESC should have been a big party a long time ago, that's true - and that's a good thing, in the early days it was all a comparatively dry affair.😉 Even in our Nicole's time this event was already more "party", but this "call for peace" from a very young lady simply hit the nerve of the times. The producer and composer Ralph Siegel had the right instinct, but he hasn't succeeded since then, especially in the last few years he has completely failed with his "big songs" at the ESC (okay, he wasn't the only German composer who has completely failed in the ESC because of his ego😈)... Unfortunately the Germans are an ungrateful people, in fact over time (actually even shortly after the ESC victory) people made a lot fun of Nicole's song, especially about the way she performed. Well, despite everything going on in the world right now, this song wouldn't stand a chance today, especially not at this kind of performance...😉 Well, I actually missed the ESC on TV this year again, I was busy elsewhere. But in the meantime I specifically watched the performances of GB, D and CH. I have to admit, I actually liked the German song, this man really has a good voice. But there wasn't much to be gained with this quite "basic" performance in these days.🙄 On this point, however, the British overdid it “a little”. It was definitely fun, but also somehow disturbing.😶😅 The Swiss song really wasn't bad, but if you take away the show and the person (and his self-portrayal), there's little left where the German song would have really been better (and I mean that objectively). But anyway, that's how the ESC works "today".😁 Many people were surprised by the Swiss victory, but over here it was highly rated early on...😉 But after the ESC is before the ESC, you can look forward to next year again.😄

      @@PolLight3000 You make a good point in that we can't escape the politics in any of our countries. Here too, they are very unhappy with our song choices and our performance (it was rather OTT, shall we say!). • @PolLight3000

      @@PopMonkeyPodcast Well, in the last couple of years we Germans have never been really happy about who represented us at the ESC (this year was an exception, here the acceptance was much greater). That's why the selection process was changed again and again.😬 Everything was tried out, from direct voting by the audience to several more or less obscure mixed voting procedures to the completely “autocratic” and secret selection by the German ESC committee.🙈 Everything went completely wrong. This time the audience was on board again and things went much better, as we now know. It remains to be seen how the election of next year's ESC participant will work from a purely technical perspective and what kind of song and which musicians will come out of it...😉 I'm very happy if you like my thoughts, I really appreciate that. I hope that one day I don't disappoint you...🙏🏻🙇🏻‍♂️😀 🍀👋🏻

    Very interesting topic😎, but also a little complicated (sorry, this is going to be a loooong comment😏): This all came at a time when I didn't watch a lot of television as a child and then as a teenager. Nevertheless, I know a couple of the series you are presenting. What I don't know in Germany are such young presenters who sing along to the title songs. It may be that there was something like that e.g. in TV Christmas specials (=> "Wir warten auf das Christkind"), but I don't really know that. Most of the theme music was brought to us in our own German versions, which were at least based on the original melodies and were mostly translated pretty much accurate into the German lyrics. For example, "Dogtanian (...)", over here called => "D'Artagnan und die 3 MuskeTiere" (please notice instead of Musketeers - in German "Musketier" - the separate word "Tier", translated => animals😄). I remember a little about this series and the music, but I only watched it very rarely. I can also hardly remember "Ulysses 31" => "Odysseus 31", but now I do remember that this series was also on our TV, also with German-language lyrics to the original melody. What I didn't know until now was "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" => "Die geheimnisvollen Städte des Goldes". At the time, this series was only shown in East Germany (GDR). It was only after reunification that it was shown on TV for all Germans, but then it completely passed me by. Here too, the title song was translated into German (I just did a quick search online). But when I now just heard the original title song here, I have to say that I really like it! I definitely have to look for it...😃🎶 The series "Around The World With Willy Fog" => "Um die Welt mit Willy Fog" is really a rare exception to the theme music: The English-language version was actually used here in Germany😯, which was extremely unusual at that time! However, I never really watched this series... Unfortunately I can't say anything about Thundercats; I've had virtually no contact with this series until today.🙄 I know of course He-Man and She-Ra from my early youth, and certainly the action figures, but both of them were somehow never really my thing, so I didn't have any action figures of them myself (interestingly, no action figures at all, regardless of the character, whether Batman, GI Joe or whoever). We had other famous comic series with theme songs that were very “important” for us Germans and that I grew up with, some of them from the late 70s - by the way, in principle all from Japanese drawing studios: On the one hand, "Heidi" with the title song by Gitti und Erika, who normally sang folk hits for adults as a duo. Just as famous was the animated series “Maya the Bee” => "Biene Maja", with the iconic theme song by Karel Gott, also a very famous folk and pop singer. And another extremely famous pop singer sang the title song for the German Tom and Jerry series: Udo Jürgens. All of these are still well known today. The German theme music from “Speedy Gonzalez” and “The Pink Panther” were also extremely catchy and famous tunes; some lines from the "Der Rosarote Panther" theme have even become household words in this country...😅 There of course were other series and their theme music, but you can clearly say that the most iconic one to date is the German theme music (not really a song) by Christian Bruhn for "Captain Future"! You can confidently say that you can hardly find a comparable piece of music in animated films (at least in German-speaking countries) - I just listened to the American title for comparison, it absolutely doesn't come close in the least... Of course, as always, it's a question of personal taste, but still...😏😁😇 So I hope you find my answer a little interesting. Yes, I could probably turn this all into its own blog, "Ralf reacts to Elaine".😂 But my thoughts are better off here, I think...😇😉

      @@PopMonkeyPodcast I am happy if I can contribute something to “international cultural exchange”.😄 Of course, this is my own personal, purely subjective selection. Except for the topic of "Captain Future", most people probably agree... Shame on me, I have forgotten a very famous comic series in our country in the 80s, even my mother loved it so much: "Wunderbare Reise des kleinen Nils Holgersson mit den Wildgänsen" (= Nirusu no fushigi na tabi = The Wonderful Adventures of Nils). But even if the German theme song itself had very little meaning (very short and actually just a single line of text), it was still a little special in a way, because these days you'll hardly hear a waltz in cartoon series anymore.😉😀

      @@PopMonkeyPodcast Well, “good” is relative.🙄 Our celebrity version isn't really funny most of the time, it's somehow more embarrassing (and this is what people want to see over here). Well, it's all a matter of taste...😶 Then I'm curious to see what else you have in store for the future, maybe I'll think of something that could be interesting and/or amusing.😀😉 (The joke with the "D" immediately came to mind too, but I didn't want to be so bold...😇)

    I watched the US one for a couple seasons, but decided it wasn't for me. Would be entertaining to see a celebrity version. Do you have a UK Survivor too? That is the only network show I watch now and never missed a season since 2000. 😅

      I found the US one quite hard to get into too. Here in the UK the celebrity version is chaotic and hilarious. Most of them admit later on that they did it for the money (tax bills being a common one!). The funny thing about Survivor is that they've tried a few times to make a version here and it never seems to get the viewing figures. I see online how popular it still is so I'm guessing it must have remained consistent or you wouldn't still be watching it. Maybe we need a celebrity Survivor here 👍

    Hello Elaine! As already mentioned before, I didn't know The Rum Runner at all until you named this club. However, it really has a very interesting story.😯😃 Big names emerged, but somehow that wasn't really made public at the time. Or maybe I just didn't notice that in my small provincial hometown.😒 Anyway, I never knew much about many musicians and bands - like Duran Duran in this case. Of course I knew this or that song from the radio. But shame on me I have to admit that I was rarely directly interested in the musicians/bands, I never collected records, and from the mid-80s onwards I preferred to spend my pocket money on my new hobby at the time, which I still pursue today...😇 It's interesting that you mention that many musicians couldn't do anything with the emerging videos - 1979 The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star".😁 In our family we hardly watched any music videos on TV, my parents didn't have much to do with MTV (nor did their German "competitor" VIVA), nor did I. I still haven't seen many of the original videos...🙄 I did listen to the radio a lot from the about the early 80s onwards (the time when I got the first radio of my own), but often more casually. At some point I was able to do homework or study for school better with my radio on in the background, and this continued until the end of my apprenticeship (and actually beyond). However, this has now completely reversed. The fact that I don't actually listen to the radio anymore and prefer to be left alone when I'm doing delicate and tricky things is another story... But nowadays we have internet.😎 Every now and then I come across a piece of music from my youth that I have almost forgotten and that I really liked back then. Of course I can now search and find a lot of it on the internet, which has advantages over before.🤓 But sometimes I also realize what I've missed over those younger years...😶 Many thanks for this video and all the information, a lot of this is not mentioned in Wikipedia.😁 Have a great time and take care! Cheers - Ralf🍀👋🏻

      I know a lot of people who can't bear the sound of anything when they're concentrating on work, so you're definitely not alone! I really enjoy your take on these subjects and I seem to have had the opposite experience in growing up - lots of tv and music everywhere clearly had an influence on me 😃. It's a nice trip down memory lane when a song provokes a memory in you and I'm intrigued to hear in future videos which bands or songs might have had an influence on your taste (when you hear songs you remember liking originally). Glad you found this interesting & look forward to hearing from you! 😁

      Once again I'm very late, I apologize🙏🏻🙇🏻‍♂️ (I'm currently doing the math and thinking, I have one last chance to get back to "my" good old glass engraving, but the material/tools are insanely expensive, I I'm afraid it won't work again - but that doesn't belong here...). Yes, it's always interesting for me too what memories come up with some music.😏 But I'm not sure any music really influenced me. A lot has come and gone, my tastes have changed a bit from time to time (I shouldn't say it out loud, but "Woodpeckers from Space" by Video Kids is one of the few vinyl singles that I was very happy to buy back then🙈🤣). Well, let's wait and see what happens next here...😊🍀👋🏻

      @@PolLight3000 Yet another string to your bow - glass engraving! I just searched on UA-cam for that song - it's peak 80s and I am loving it! 😆You've introduced me to music I'd not heard before and that's what I love about this platform. Looking forward to more new discoveries 👍

      He was so good - even better than I'd hoped! Our passports are so strange here - you're not allowed to smile, wear glasses, need to have your hair back & then they put a holographic effect over it. Ironically, you don't look like yourself anymore 😂

    I got to see Sophie supporting George Michael many years ago now, it was pouring with rain but she went on and performed with an umbrella and bossed it.
