S4 - Broadsword vs Rapier - HEMA Steel Sword Fighting

Here is a match with the broadsword against a rapier. The rapier has reach, but the broadsword has blade presence and cutting power.

Here is a fun match against side sword and saber. Both have close weight and length, though the side sword features a straight blade which gives advantage for reach, but carries the disadvantage of having exposed hands.

S4 - Katana vs Longsword - HEMA Mixed Weapon Sparring
Переглядів 1544 години тому
In this one, I finally get to wield a sparring-safe Katana. I faced off against the longsword to really get a test of how well I could handle such a weapon. All in all, it was tremendous fun and extremely light weight with quick swings. I would need some time to get comfortable with it, but could enjoy using one of them more often.

In this exchange we kept scraping each other and didn't really have anything direct until he got my wrist good at the end. • @McCameyMedievalCombat
      @McCameyMedievalCombat 5 місяців тому

      Some schools historically just did thrust oriented fighting but that is really just for small sword. Rapier up to about 40 blade inches are very capable of cutting. Anything longer starts to require a more blocky edge to keep the sword from flopping. Some longer ones can cut but may struggle. Joachim Meyer's (German master circa mid 1500s) rapier and side sword teachings is very cut oriented. Your sca guys may have been doing a specific time period, or country customs but in general yes rapier can cut (and their cuts pack a punch. I've been hit enough by em haha) Let me also add this is an old video now and a terrible example of sparring lmaooo, some much better rapier fencing in newer videos!

      The longsword was definitely more one sided since it was their first time fighting against it with the arming sword. @@Von_NoVa If your cousin is newer to HEMA and is doing longsword they will want thicker more forgiving jacket. AP light is the good choice. So is standard AP. If experienced, or only doing 1 handed swords then the Renn jacket I use would be an excellent choice. This would be more like ultra light. I had to modify mine and add breastplate to make it safer for longsword. Both are almost the same jacket, but the ap light has a lil more padding, whereas the renn has more style. Not a bad idea to do a review video though, I've been meaning to start doing those. In the mean time I hope that info helps!

    Thanks for showing bad cuts on the tatami roll. It is the first time I saw it, so it helps me appreciate a good cut. Also, beautiful work on the paper.

      Thanks I appreciate it. The tatami and paper are both harder to get a clean cut on than they look, the tatami for sure!
