Hello and welcome to my channel, and Rail Media Productions.
A variety of steam locomotives have survived into preservation and can still be enjoyed today at the many heritage railways and museums. Throughout the videos, we travel to a variety of locations to record steam action, as well as showing the achievements that so many volunteers and employees have put in to make sure heritage locomotives are able to be enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide. Videos are being released on the channel as soon as they become available, we are history enthusiasts and the aim is to bring you action from Australia and a small selection of overseas content depending on funding. We also focus on the steam locomotives of the South Australian Railways, and many other heritage rail movements. I sincerely hope you enjoy these videos and if you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to get in touch.

This loco is 70 years old Is it still operational
Its great to see this locomotive still operating regular excursions on the mainline, and especially during its 40th anniversary since restoration in 2024. I still have a video to release about R761's visit to South Australia in the mid 1980's and 1994, but it may be a few weeks before I can get it released as it still requires quite a bit of work.
He was an amazing man. Rip Tony
Brilliant Mate ... thanks so much for this fine Tribute to the great man
@@paulusintas8627 Thanks very much for that Paul 👍 I wanted to do something for Tony as I had a lot of time for him, and it was extremely sad to hear about his passing yesterday. I hope you are keeping well mate, it’s been a long time since we last saw each other in person.
I hope one day these locos go into display in the Collie Roundhouse.
Sadly I didn't get a chance to see the roundhouse at Collie. I hope one day I can reach out to the caretakers of the roundhouse to find out if it would be possible to film it.
@railmediaproductions3677 I don't think anyone is allowed in sadly as it is full of asbestos
@@Trainanatic I should have a video out by the end of tomorrow of a few steam remnants that I managed to find around Yarloop last month.

The loco was in Australia between 1988, and 1989. The majority of the images and video footage was taken around that time, but the remaining shots of the loco in the UK were taken in the early 1990’s, then 1999, and finally between 2009 and about 2018. When steam locomotives were being built in not only Victoria but elsewhere, the quality of workmanship/craftmanship was absolutely mindblowing. From the drawing board to the final product, everyyhing had to fit correctly everything had to be manufactured to the highest of standards. Just totally beautiful efforts and totally brilliant outcomes. No wonder they were called 'the ironhorses'.

@@margaretcampbell2681 They do some great steam trips around Victoria 👍
That a really cool engine, imagine it being restored for operational conditions
@@User-KNEBEL555 Thankfully we can still enjoy the sight and sound of this locomotive running on the mainline today. When I filmed these scenes in November 2022, the engine was in the process of being prepared for a boiler inspection. R711 originally returned to mainline operations in late 1998, and it continued in service until 2002 when West Coast Railway ended their regular steam express programme to Warrnambool. It didn’t run again until 2004 when it was transferred with sister R class number 766 to Newport Workshops. R711 wouldn’t run on the mainline again until 2011, and since then it has travelled many kilometres on most of the remaining 5 foot 3 Broad Gauge lines around Victoria.
Great Video, is that device at 4:11 the controls for operating Diesel Locomotives in Multiple Unit? and if so does it still work?
@@JacobGrimaR761 Yes it certainly is. I believe the controls for operating a diesel locomotive from the cab of R711 still work on the engine today.
Very nice, thanks for sharing. Dave
Thanks very much for that Dave. There will be another video coming out tomorrow of sister R class number 761 which I filmed at Newport Workshops on the same day.
Now that is what you need to work on steam locomotives, a decent overhead bridge crane. Is the engine' combustion and cylinders still modified to South African Railway engineering...the 'Red Devil' 25 class modification?
@@rsinclair6560 Its a great workshop facility at Newport, and it is certainly a fascinating place to walk around. I know the oil burning system is still the same on R711 from West Coast Railway days, and the controls for operating a diesel loco is still fitted in the cab, but that’s about as far as I know. The ‘Red Devil’ is definitely a locomotive I would like to film one day.
its all removed but likely not destroyed. this is the loco that threw a rod. no r class ever threw a rod. it was blamed on excess horsepower that it got because of the mods. if i was rich and i owned r711, i'd build a set of replacement higher strength rods and put all the go-fast gear back on it. if i was rich i'd build another s class first.
@@vsvnrg3263 I remember hearing about the rod being thrown off the loco, was that back in about 2001?
@@railmediaproductions3677 , i found written info about it. someone who replied to my comment in a video starring r711 told me how r711 with the super mods never had to reverse to get a run-up at the grade through the tunnel out of south geelong station.
