Foil provides zero insulating value when there's no air gap. It only blocks radiant heat transfer but all heat transfer between your subfloor and floor is conductive transfer

Hello, I live in an old house with wooden floors upstairs and downstairs. Unfortunately, the upstairs floor area (in certain parts) has been badly treated in the past - I think by workmen using indiscrimminate methods of accessing wiring and pipes. The result is that parts of my upstairs floor is uneven and feels insecure under foot. There is a thin carpet covering. What I want to do is roll back the carpet, place some sort of high-density tiles or covering and replace the carpet. Could you recommend a good product which should make the floor feel solid and firm underfoot? I live in Dublin Ireland and I am assuming that your products (which sound great) can be purchased in Dublin or that I can, at least, purchase them online. Also, do they need to be glued or screwed down or might there be sufficient traction to hold them in place? Thank you for your help.

Hi, thanks for making this video, so much great content on UA-cam! I am replacing a laminate floor and intend to put electric under floor heating in under the laminate. What advice do you have re the insulation? I don't know yet what the sub floor is, but it is a residential development of flats, built in 2001 and we are on the 2nd floor, so I am guessing it will be timber. With energy prices so high we are keen to insulate effectively so that we minimise the cost of the underfloor heating. Do you have any idea how much energy you save by 10mm v 6mm? Or whether some materials are more effective at preventing heat loss than others? I don't yet know how much space we have, but I would appreciate any guidance you can give on optimising for energy loss/thickness. I don't have an unlimited budget, but think that insulating as well as possible would be a good investment. Thanks!

  • @johnworsley9371

Regarding the beginning of your video Why would you not want to use an underlay on a 2nd floor that has OSB boards when nailing down solid horizontal strand bamboo that is 3 3/4 x 9/16" thick (also has T&G edges)? Seems like you can't lose and might help any miniscule leveling imperfections and gain soundproofing while at it... This solid bamboo product I have has the following written instructions under the nail down method "Prior to installing flooring, roll out 15 lb. felt or asphalt impregnated paper in the same direction of the flooring. Overlap each row by 3 in to 4 in" I'm thinking about using the Pergo Gold 3mm underlayment instead of the felt. Any thoughts..it's around 280 sq foot area.??

@@woodfloorwarehouse781 Thanks for your answer. The installer when he saw the pergo gold 3mil , said , sorry charley, I aint using that , Basically gave me the same reason. He went and got the manufacturers recommended underlayment. Looks pretty solid so far, we acclimated it for about 7 days or so. I have to say the Bamboo is pretty satisfying compared to the old cheap carpet a builder installed. Feels like a real floor now.

Hello very informative video, but not much said for hardwood other than not recommending underlayment. I will be nailing 3/4" (19mm) red oak hardwood over oriented strand board subfloor. From what I gather I need to use at least rosin paper to help with squeaking. What are your thoughts on felt, foam or cork? My subfloor is level but not very even, with up to 1/8" (3mm) height difference between subfloor boards. Of course I will even out the edges between the boards with a planer, but as far as underlayment, is there one that will improve this situation even more? It's my first flooring project and I can't find any definitive information about underlayment for hardwood floors since credible sources seem to all be saying different things. Thanks

Enjoyed your instructive video. Very helpful :) I'm installing engineered wood over the original timber floorboards in the ground floor hallway of our Victorian property. For the underlay I need good levelling & heat insulation with some degree of sound insulation ... so I'm swaying between the Acousta 3mm (Timbertech) and Techni-board Insulating underlays. My understanding is that a DPM is not advised for a timber sub-floor, so would that rule out using the Acousta 3mm as it includes an 'aluminium vapour barrier'? Maybe I'm confusing this vapour barrier with a DPM but would appreciate your advice. Many thanks.

I am looking for an underlay for a cold concrete floor in an old property. I note that the underlays for concrete floors are both insulating and suitable for underfloor heating, but isn't that a contradiction because if it was insulating, wouldn't it lessen the transmission of temperature from the concrete floor through the barrier underlay? Hi I’ve just recently purchased a old Florida house built in 1922 that has original heart pine floor that was buried underneath some trash carpet. The floor is actually not terrible, considering it’s almost 100 years old; but their is a few spots. The house is on concrete stilts that keep the bottom of the house a little over a foot off the ground. As far as I can tell theirs nothing else under the heart pine floors other than the foot of air space and then the actual ground (one board was loose and allowed me to look through it and I saw the ground) I’m not actually trying to restore the heart pine as I’m way too busy now to take on that project as well, so I settled on just putting laminate down over top the heart pine. My question is, with the foot of air space, and with how great heart pine locks out moisture, would I be able to JUST use a moisture barrier overtop the pine and then lay the laminate? Or should I actually install a subfloor of plywood on top of pine and then a moisture barrier and thennnn finally the laminate? I know this is a super long question😂 any help is appreciated. Thanks again
