Welcome
Looking foreward to sharing my every day horse-life with with great people like you!
I’m Henriette and I live in Norway. We run a farm with a stable and a riding school. We have 30 horses and a top-ranked Fjord horse breeding stallion.
I’m a teacher in equine studies as well as a riding instructor trained at the Norwegian Equestrian School. Trainer 2 certification in show jumping and dressage from the Norwegian Equestrian Federation and certified Trainer 1 in driving.
Twice county champion in show jumping, trained and competed horses up to Prix St. Georg level in dressage. I have competed with the national team in both single and pair driving. My apprenticeship as a rider was at Los Alamos Dressage Center in NJ.
I love horses! From gentling them to be quiet and soft, to their first carriage or ride undersaddle, and beyond. The hope is to give horses a solid calm start, and then a safe journey in life. I hope to share my experiences with you and contribute value to you.

How old is this young man? He reminds me a lot of my Fjord. A four year old gelding who was ridden for the first time this autumn. I learnt a lot of your Videos Greetings from Germany
Hi! Great, Thank you for letting me know! 🥰 This is a 1,5 year old gelding. You’re exactly the kind of person I’m hoping to reach with my videos: Is there a specific topic you’d like to see a video on?
@@Horsewise01 I'd like to see something about the first times of Trot and canter under the saddle, because that is something we have struggle with😅
@@Draconis96-04 Ok, I’ll make a video on that topic during the next weeks. Do you have access to an arena or indoor riding space, or is trail riding more what you’re looking for? There are definitely different things to consider based on what facilities you have available. So I want to make the video as relevant as possible!
@@Horsewise01 That is so nice! I have a small outdoor arena where we do our training sessions
Really good video as usual. You put words to all the things that is important when dealing with horses. And Olaf is proof that Tullen makes really well tempered offspring, he has the kindest eyes, and I am so much in love with him.
@@pernille2389 Super nice to read, thanks for that! It’s the little things that can turn into big problems for both horses and people if you’re not paying attention and taking them seriously. Is there anything you think is missing in the video?
That was such a nice comment to receive, and super motivating! These are things I really want to share knowledge about because I believe these little things can make life better for both horses and people. Is there anything here you’d like to see more of, or something you felt was missing?
Beautiful animals and a beautiful riding trail
Looks like an exciting ride with all those wild animals around and a lovely place to be able to go out. You can really see how much you look like your daughter here as well 😊
You should have been here, joining us 🤩
@@Horsewise01 aww I kinda felt like I was. I was being super still and quiet when watching the cow and calf lol
Ah brilliant. I think lots of people realise yawning is a release in horses but don't think about themselves ❤
Can't wait to watch, this will be SO helpful for trailering my fjord mare!! 🤗🥳
Clever boy, he is learning fast. I just love how polyvalent a Fjord is, I try to train all my horses to do everything, but to be honest my big, big draft junmps like a rock, and dressage is not his forte either, but if one needs a car sat on hes your guy.
I agree, it is that they are so versatile that is so great about Fjord horses 🤩👍
Haircuts on horses are okay, as long as you don't trim their manes -- with the exception of, are they around other horses? Horses will bite each other when bored or stressed, and long manes protect their necks from biting
Hi! Check the related video for more info about this breed and its mane 😊👍

It is horrible when something is wrong with our horses, thanks to all the vets and farriers that help us and them, I'm so happy that he got well so quickly. My farrier recommended horse boots for my horses when out hacking in rough terrain, and it seems to prevent a lot of bruising from stones, she also has some silicone boots she uses when treating abscesses, it is less difficult than wrapping with duct tape.
Beautiful horses

@@Horsewise01 I watched the beautiful bicolor mane's trim video. Now, my first thought was, if nature is perfect, then maybe the thick and heavy manes are a protection and a way to keep them warm as wild horses from the extreme cold winter from Norway ?! Just an idea... 🥰

Biggest challenge of owning a young horse-trying not to be too biased when you see such potential and beauty in their baby confirmation. It’s so easy to daydream about how talented they’ll be when they’re grown-when it’s just as likely that they’ll be pretty average.
I totally resonate! And with emotions in addition, it can be a challenge to see that the horse is ordinary and not special 😂🤭
Taking a guess , the young horse’s boundless energy and urge to play and not work ?
What do you think is the most challenging aspect of owning a young horse?
A lovely video as usual, Gråman is a handsome boy, and he was the cutest foal. The biggest challenge for me with my young horses was to make sure that I didn't make any horrible errors training them. I'm fortunate to have a very good trainer with strong principles, but when in doubt I think it is so important to be patient and err on the side of caution. So my two young horses were trained with lots of treats, and very little pressure, probably too little at times, but it worked out in the end, even if I never got round to teach them to wear a bridle, I might do it next year.
There both stunning ❤
Thank you! What part of the video did you enjoy the most today?
@@Horsewise01I couldn’t tell you why but my heart melts when I see a fjord driving ❤
Very useful information and some really clear steps for me to try out and follow. Thank you. I am quite stiff in my hips and have an old tendon injury in one knee which seems to make me slightly different from left to right. But fortunately my horses learn to adapt.
Is that a stallion?
Hi! When this was filmed, both were stallions. (The grey one is gelded now)
Love your channel!! I have a Fjord I make videos with too! 🥰

@@Horsewise01 Aw thank you so much!! ❤
Great video, you are a very good trainer. When I first learned to ride many, many years ago none of this was ever explained to us, we just had to figure it out or get yelled at. When I started taking riding lessons again here in France I was happily surprised that this now is part of the training, and includes something they call mise en selle which is yoga on horseback, and can feel a little like torture as you a posting trot without stirrups, ot galloping with your knees and arms up, the place I train even has weekly young classes which has helped me immensely as I'm no longer quite young.
Thank you for sharing and your nice comment! ❤️ Do you mind sharing what you found most useful or valuable in this video? Was there something specific that resonated with you today?
My elbows tend to get too straight. I have short arms, and to get straight line from bit to elbow means I am reaching down. It gets exaggerated in trot.
Hi, Thank you for your comment! We are who we are, some have shorter arms than others. That means that if we are not to have straight arms but a soft bend in the elbow, our hands tend to be a little higher than those with long arms. To have a straight line from the horse's mouth to our elbow, our arms must necessarily be straighter than those with longer arms. I think the most important thing is to do our best to ride relaxed and in good balance, and have a soft contact with the horse's mouth. So let the hands be a little higher or a little straighter than we might wish. We are different, but we just have to make the best of the conditions we have. Keep riding! 🥰
What do you find most challenging when riding? Feel free to share in the comments, I'd love to know!

The horse is objecting strongly to her insensitive hands and the contradicting cues she's giving him. Very funny! She obviously needs more schooling before she's ready for this advanced level. Is he at 4th level/Prix St. George or what?
The horse looks beautiful
Yes, he is! Are you familiar with fjordhorses? 😊
@@Horsewise01 a bit.. Is my favorite bred and I alr saw some... They look adorable ❤️
To be honest, I believe that the biggest mistake when buying horses is inexperience. And by this I mean a young rider (a teen or a little kid) with parents that have minimal or no involvement with the horseworld. Parents often think, that a horse is just a large dog who eats more and their kid can sit on it. Even though, a properly cared for and trained dog needs way more care, time, space and money than the average dog realistically gets. A horse is many times more of that. But parents who have the money often don't have the knowledge. They may get the help of a trainer or another equestrian, but these people are more often than not invested in getting those horses bought. I have heard of plenty stories where a "family friend" equestrian sold a problematic horse that either belonged to them, another friend, family, business partner or otherwise they got a cut from the sale. Similarly, a trainer might want a horse bought because the trainer or friend/family gets money from the sale, or perhaps the trainer wants to sell their services to "train up" the horse, which then ends up being completely unrideable for months and months, because it's too dangerous for the kid, and the trainer has to work on it. Or perhaps they have other designs on the horse - like a horse bought for the kid to compete on later, but first the horse needs to gain experience under the trainer. Who then not only gets to compete on a horse they didn't spend money to buy, but also gets paid for their "service". And would this trainer rather buy a horse that would be good for the kid, or better suited for the trainer? Right. There are a million and one scammers and selfish people. If you do not have the experience and knowledge to buy a good horse, you have no business buying one. The problem is the age old "you don't know what you don't know". So parents with little knowledge think that they can make an informed choice, when in fact, they cannot. Altough it doesn't have to be just the parents of a young rider, even if that happens often. I have seen adults, who have not been around horses for long, but have enough money to drop on a horse, rush off to buy one. I myself don't have the confidence to buy one, even though I know what to look out for. It's just too much money and responsibility to decide for me. It always boggles my mind, when I hear about a person at my barn searching for a horse to buy, when they started riding like 5 months ago. One example, that remained forever in my mind, was that of a TV show, where the poor and rich families exchange homes and spending money for a week. And on one of these episodes, there was a poor family with a mother (if i remember correctly, she didn't have a husband) and like 2-3 kids. They were really poor. The mother showed no signs of having any equestrian past. The only thing she mentioned was that "I always wanted a pony. For the kids". Said kids showed no interest. Anyway, the rich family had such a large budget, that she could buy a pony with that money. And she did. Instead of any home appliance, or supplies for the kids and herself, she bought a pony. It was a small one too, not something her size could ride, so as soon as the kids grew a couple years older, it would be basically a pasture pet. I simply cannot imagine, how she could finance the care of that horse, when on an average day she struggled to feed herself and her kids. She probably thought, that she only needed to buy it, and then let it eat the grass in their yard. The last time I had such delusions about horse care, was when I was around 10-11 years old.
Sounds like you've really put a lot of thought into this! I agree that many times, unfortunately, there isn't enough knowledge and experience among those considering buying a horse. My hope is that the need for education and experience can be uncovered through good conversations beforehand, and that the buyer is motivated to acquire sufficient knowledge and experience. So that both they and the specific horse can have an easier and better life when a deal is eventually made.
74 YRS OLD AMERICAN AND THANKS FOR YOUR IMPORTANT AND KIND WORDS ABOUT HORSE BUYING. A HORSE GIRL IS A HORSE GIRL 😂 SO TRUE. WE LOOK AT LIFE THRU OUR HORSES LIVES. @@martylesnick2032 Hi Susan 😊 Wow, thats so true! ⭐️Life without horses is incomplete⭐️ Would you like to share what advice you found most useful here today? From a horsegirl in Norway to a horsegirl in the US 😊 Henriette
Was looking for an Icelandic horse. Ideally 8-12 year old, preferably black, bay or red or any other easy to keep colour. Tried many horses that fit the category. Ended up with a 6 year old black tobiano mare with a lot of white 😅 She fit my needs the best, I had the best connection with her and a very honest seller. They also dropped her off hours away because they wanted to see where she'd end up and we're still in contact. I can always call if i have any problems and they will try their best to help me, or even take her back temporarily for training if needed (the extra gaits are hard if you're inexperienced) My nr 1 advice is try multiple horses, bring someone with experience, and if you find a horse you like try them multiple times in all the disciplines you plan to ride them in. If the seller doesn't want you to test them multiple times don't buy from them.
Thanks for sharing 🤩 Sounds like a great experience for you, and what a super seller taking such responsibility 👏🏻👏🏻
Do you have any experiences, stories or tips, feel free to share in the comments section! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Never, ever trust a person wanting to sell you a horse😂
Thanks for all the good advice. When I bought my horses I knew exactly what I wanted, a Friesian that was well ridden and could help me remember my skills as I was a bit rusty, and a Fjord that I could learn to drive with, and do a lot of ground work with. I found both horses with amazing owners that wouldn't sell without me also taking the Shetland pony best friends, so instead of two horses I suddenly had four😅 and by now I have seven horses and two donkeys, the rest is rescues. I have to add that I'm over fifty, and have no intention of competing, I just want to spend my days hanging out with horses.
Great! I used to have a friesian too, he was really one of a kind ❤️ It feels like the two of us have a lot in common! Was there anything specific from what I talked about in the video that you found more helpful or interesting?
@@Horsewise01 you mentioned not bringing the trailer, and even if it is funny it is also very good advice, because it forces you to go home and have a good think before buying. I looked at many horses before buying the ones I did, and had I brought a trailer I wouldn't have the amazing horses I ended up buying , because I'm not very good at saying no, which is probably why I have nine équidés instead of the two I planned for.
@@pernille2389 Great! I’ve promised myself never to bring the trailer first time anymore 😂 The yearling in the trailer, I actually looked at two times before I brought the trailer… I gave myself time to think through, and I do not regret either the time to think or the purchase 😊
I have always wondered what genetic composition you need to get a Chance of a yellow dun horse. Do you know? I believe Red dun and a brightening gene?
The gene that makes a horse white dun or red dun is called the cream gene. This gene lightens red pigment, and therefore is not visible on gray Fjord horses. A brown dun horse with the cream gene will become white dun, and a red dun horse with the cream gene will become yellow dun. This gene cannot skip a generation or be hidden (except on gray Fjord horses), so for a horse to become yellow dun, white dun, or gray with hidden cream gene, one of the parents must have this gene. A horse with the cream gene will statistically pass this on to 50% of its offspring 😊
Aww that was fun. Lovely dynamics
Thank you! ✨
