Fun, Food, and Marathons: A Chat with Biomedical Engineer Tom Smoot | Run Tri Bike
In this engaging and lighthearted episode, host Jason Bahamundi from Run Tri Bike sits down with biomedical engineer Tom Smoot, who is currently training for the Marine Corps marathon. This conversation dives into much more than just running-it’s about food, pop culture, and Tom’s unique approach to marathoning, offering inspiration and some good laughs along the way.
The episode kicks off with a lively discussion about pizza. While Tom shares his surprising love for cauliflower pizza topped with pineapple and bacon, Jason counters with some favorite New York City pizza spots, including a special recommendation for Tivola in Hell’s Kitchen. The light banter continues as they swap local NYC food recommendations, covering everything from ice cream donuts at Holy Cream to the perfect post-race meals.
Running enthusiasts will love the insights into Tom’s marathon preparations. As he gears up for the Marine Corps marathon, Tom talks about how music fuels his runs, sharing his habit of creating new playlists for each marathon he runs. His biomedical engineering background adds an interesting twist as he humorously compares his lab work to the popular show The Big Bang Theory.
The conversation then shifts to food preferences and racing in New York City. From favorite post-race meals like hot dogs and crab cakes to Tom's contemplation of getting into triathlons, the episode offers a blend of humor, inspiration, and relatable moments for endurance athletes. A fun rapid-fire question segment highlights Tom’s love for apple cider over pumpkin spice, edge pieces of brownies, and his surprising enjoyment of circus peanuts.
Tom’s reflections on his running routes through New York City, along with stories of navigating construction on his favorite trails, will resonate with any city-based athlete. If you’re looking for an episode that will motivate you to lace up your running shoes and explore new post-race eats, this is the one!

    Such a great episode. Agree with the choices. Sauerkraut just has to go. And the bread might soften up if you run with it a few miles and be good eating further along the way.

    Second comment: I recently joined an endurance running community with a pay wall model for their coaching related information. I payed up $100/year to try and develop resources to support my fitness and endurance goals. I sampled a few others before deciding which to join. What my initial experience has been is that many of these up start communities of the last 5 years are all learning the “culture” part of endurance sports. My group has a problem many other sports have had in the past which is that many of the people they hold up as role models are not very good people outside of the sport. Many have views that drive them into endurance sports because they believe it is exclusively for people like them. Sharing the trails with people who don’t look like them, come from the same communities as them, or hearing from people within the group who come at their knowledge of these sports from other disciplines, is not very easy to accept for many in the dominant groups. In the next decade America will see an influx of African athletes coming to endurance sports. As more African youth come into the NCAA distance running, cross country, and swimming programs, remain in the United States to live and raise families, you will see endurance sports see a larger black presence and a dominating one. The number of young East Africans I’m trailing with in the hills here is SW Washington between Seattle and Portland is fairly impressive. These athletes will continue beyond the marathon and that will put them right in the heart of our endurance events. It’s important that we create communities and teams that welcome and appreciate every athletes journey and contribution. Endurance is our human super power. It’s important for our mental health and physical longevity. It’s a human thing right. So let’s be inclusive before it becomes us vs. you guys. That may sound like fun, but it should be teams, not racial or gender groups.

    Thank you Jason for clarifying and emphasizing the issue of “imposter Syndrome”. It’s very real and has massive health and lifestyle implications to the negative side. Our society is full of unicorns and model minorities of some kind. The presence of an average archetype that pulls in everyone possible in an organic way has to be created and promoted because most of us are not that exception. Endurance sports is the worst when it comes to being set up to amplify imposter syndrome. If we don’t see it, we are part of that culture, and it’s important to talk about.

    • @runtrimag
      @runtrimag 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for your comment. Imposter Syndrome is something I deal with on a consistent basis and there are times where the stress and anxiety from it are difficult to deal with and I need to step away. Getting away in those moments is critical for me because I can self-reflect and see where we started, where we are and what we are doing to continue to move forward. That is in business and in my performance in endurance sports. - Jason
