Trucks are going to love them roundabouts
I have been driving big commercial vehicles in Halifax for many years, they are not so bad. The drivers of the tractor trailers, not sure how most of them feel. This one might be ok, since the main trucking goes down one road, unlike Armdale.
Simply amazing! !
It was unreal. I was able to walk on Upper Water street and see up Cogswell, see Scotia Square and so on.
Any decks
that blue glass building top floor is 6k , middle floor is 4k and botton floor is 3k and she is full of people lol , affordable housing lol
Those prices are unreal. I don't think that project was ever labeled as affordable thought. The building on Jowe Howe has some apartments that are going to be discounted. They are not low income, just more affordable then the regular apartments.
cool so there most likely going to build more expensive apts with nasty prices that nobody can afford lol
Someone can afford it, or they wouldn't build it. I would love to see them have x percentage of the units at in the affordable range and some in low income.
Halifax might look better but the traffic is going to be complete HELL after this is done. I work center downtown Montreal I had lunch meeting on east island today I took the highway out of the core to the meeting and back in 1 hour and 30 min there and back. Highways to the center core of any city is imported for business and travel. Halifax destroyed all this.
There are cities all over North America that are getting rid of the structures like the Cogswell interchange. The road in hasn't changed, only the mess in this area that shouldn't have been built in the first place. The only changes to the drive into the core are the streets with bus priority lanes. Cogswell on its own will not cause a problem. Montreal and Halifax are two different animals. I drove through there at least a few times. Once was during a parade. That was poor timing and a nightmare. Once was during rush hour. I didn't feel that rush hour there was any better. There were more lanes, but a lot more traffic. There is only so much you can do with Halifax traffic. I don't think you could ever make traffic good in this city. Way too many single lane roads. Hollis, Barrington, North Street, the bridges are too small...I could go on. Come for the Halifax Waterfront, Citadel hill, Point Pleasant Park, Peggy's Cove, stay because you are trapped in traffic.
@@beautifulnovascotia I had to visit back in 2019 after they added the bus lanes to robie I got stuck in Traffic for 3 hours it was complete grid lock. Montreal has bus lanes as well but the key factor is 3 lanes per side two for cars and one for bus. Halifax keeps calling it self a smart city. Funny how dumb they are. You have a Shipping terminal downtown and no way for trucks to get there except on city single lane streets. I did see the plans for the Third Bridge that would have solved many things. One a highway to the downtown core, two a highway to the terminal allowing trucks to avoid the downtown core. Three a highway to north west arm. That 3rd Bridge would have killed 3 problems with one stone. But nope never happened.
@@beautifulnovascotia I lived there from 1999 to 2018 glad I left. Period!
Wow Glad I left Halifax when I did in 2018. So glad I moved to Montreal that has a highway to the downtown core. Which I work center city everyday. Halifax and NS has always been so backwards. Build a brand new convention center but then destroy all chances of a highway to the core. Not great for big trucks to get to a convention center. NS wants more ppl downtown to shop then destorys the quick way to get there. They wanted more tourists downtown for the tall ships when they come in. Solution destroy all the parking lots downtown and build big buildings. I used to live in Joesph howe area. It was a nice small community now its look more like huntario street in mississauga.
It wasn't getting the traffic it was designed to handle, and it was in rough shape. I drove over it a lot and it was hard on vehicles. I sat on it many times trying to get onto Barrington Street. There is a roundablout being built by the base. That will help with traffic. I don't feel it will get much better but will not be worse. No parking lots wore removed for this for this project. Well the base lost some parking for the roundabout but that sections hasn't been full in a long time. As far as the buildings go, we need more hosing.
Please don't be afraid of tall buildings, we are all grown up now and we expect some 40 story buildings.
I'm not afraid of tall buildings, the city seems to be. We need more housing, seeing some of the shorter buildings drives me nuts. It seems like a lost opportunity. They need to make some improvements that will help with traffic. That is right behind housing for high priority needs right now. I would like to see the Windsor Street Exchange project get started.
Halifax is going to look so good after this is done. I can hardly wait to see the new high density housing and other buildings plus a park or 2.
6:00 Looks like they found the remains of an old boat.
Does almost look like that.
Just out of curiosity, where are the trucks going??
I was wondering that myself. I'm not sure, I will see if I can find out.
It is fascinating to follow this as a life long Nova Scotian. Halifax is already a stunningly beautiful Capital City, but this will be the cream on the cake. I contrast the more angular buildings built during the late 1960's evidenced in your update. Now we will see more truly modern structures and I look forward to what city planners and developers have in mind. Let's see some real imagination and beauty, curves and height. Please Halifax don't be afraid of high density and height. Since we often, by tradition, refer to cities as feminine Halifax needs to put on her big girl panties and build for and plan for one million plus people in a modern city with greater amenities beginning with a third bridge, aquarium, sports facilities, new museums & art gallery, and much more. The east coast of Canada needs a big city, and Halifax is the answer. No more silly being afraid of height and density in the city core. The day a new Opera House opens will be a true sign that Halifax has grown up to her million plus place among cities in North America. Halifax you have permission from this life long Nova Scotian to grow up!
I agree with a lot if that. Some problems with height I heard use to be Citidel Hill. If so, this area isn't blocking a site line of the hill. And you can only do so much. I think a lot of the new buildings going up are too short. I'm not so sure Ai agree on a third bridge. Where would you put it? I think both bridges are under sized. I hate to think of the traffic caused by replacing one of them
At last! They are going to start on that hideous cnoncrete wall!! BRAVO
I'm excited as well and am currently filming the next video.
Can I just say I really appreciate this series on the Cogswell District development? I'm really excited to see what comes of it, and your videos help me keep track of it's progress.
Thabk you. I appreciate it. I enjoy doing it. Let me know if there are any other parts of the city you would like to see videos on.
Many thanks mate!!!
You're welcome
Great addition to that corner. I remember the old Birks store when it was there!!
I'm impressed with the building. I'm not sure if I remember Birks.
It looks absolutely disgusting 🤮, like whole city Halifax, and whole Canada in general. Infrastructure so outdated, public transport is absolutely garbage. Country running by morons
I will be so happy to see that concrete wall disappear!!
Same here. I'm ready for it to be gone.
Thank you
You're welcome
I miss the concrete labyrinth
Really? I'm enjoying the changes, just not the traffic that comes with it
How about a vid of the new Press Box building!!! :-)
I can do that.
I am not a fan of glass buildings but i would be thrilled to see Scotia Square covered in a glass exterior
I like some glass. The glass has to be maintained, though. There is a building in Bedford with mirrored glass. Some of it isn't in good shape. It makes the building look bad.
It's unfortunate that Scotia Square does not redo the exterior of their buildings. It is quite dreadful looking
They did a little years ago when they did the food court. I do agree that it needs to be dressed up. It has no curb appeal. But the inside matches so.
When you spooned that stuff on them muscles My wallet caught on fire looks pricey lol
Lol. The oysters were $3.50 each. That isn't too bad.
This has been the best lobster roll I ever had at a restaurant. It is definitely worth checking out the Bicycle Thief if you are on the Halifax Waterfront.
Halifax NS is growing rapidly with a goal of reaching one million people in most of our lifetimes. It will be necessary to take down many short buildings to find more space for high rises. It is vital for Halifax to start building high density housing, many buildings of at least forty stories. So many plans for high rises include 2 or 3 retail levels replacing one retail structure with another more thoughtful building.
I spend a lot of time driving around Halifax for work. I can't imagine Halifax with double the population. I would like to think that some things would improve but the traffic wouldn't be one of them. I was in NY during rus hour. Took the subway for a bit, then got off and walked to avoid some of the crowds. Even for walking, they have wider sidewalks in a lot of those areas. One issue with doing 40 story buildings, they have put up a lot of buildings that are much shorter, and have more going up now. You will have a lot of new or newish buildings that will not be removed to put up 40 stories. There have been buildings that have went up that were shorter than I thought they should have been. You do need to take advantage of that piece of land, but there are limits.
Will they close Water Street to take down that large concrete wall???
I was wondering the same thing. I can't see them taking it down without shutting down the road, at least for a couple of days. To do that, they would need something open so the truck traffic can get to Hollis street
Perhaps they will wait until the new Cogswell Street will connect with Water Street
@@iworshipgloves The problem with that is, Cogswell meets Upper Water Street, right between the two parking structures. So that wall has to go first. Another option would be to finish Barrington and then have traffic use Bells Lane. That could be a bit tight for the trucks though. The also didn't design any of the Cogswell to Barrington Street intersection. Seems like making that first would have been the right move. Rather then redo that section at a later date.
The concrete wall facing Scotia Square is all down!!!HORRAY
It looks amazing. Only two walls left. The small one by the Hotel Barrington, which might have to remain in some form for the hotels receiving doors, and the massive one by the Casino. In part 26 you can still see a bit of the base of some columns that still have to be removed. For the first time I could see the treatment plant from the Hotel side. Huge transformation so far.
All the money this is costing could be spent on something more important. What a waste.
I disagree. They wasted the money when they first destroyed a community and built this. I'm not sure if you have drove over these over passes but they were not in the best shape. Always full of pot holes, and the concrete for the guard rails were starting to crumble. It was going to require a lot of money to maintain it. This project opens land for new buildings, and business which bring in taxes, it creates area for a new bus terminal, as well as public spaces.
It was more necessary to built a full capacity hospital.
Both are necessary. There is work being done at the hospital. I haven't shot a video there yet or heard what exactly it is for yet
The progress on the concrete wall with dirt removal is going nicely. it will be interesting to see what Barring Street from Scotia Square will look like once finished.
That will be interesting since the street will be lowered.
As more and more beautiful new buildings replace old structures with a great story/history it is important to remember the history of the earlier buildings. Space should be created within the new building to simulate/illustrate the Pharmacy space.
I like how they keep the old facade on some of the old buildings in Halifax. You get to keep some of that old look from the street.
Trash heap before the demo
Ay good to see this video my demo crew takedown the overpass 😃👍
Nice work. It came down fast. I almost missed it.
There are two hundred streets in the downtown core of Halifax that were built before the automobile. Honestly these two hundred streets are better suited for pedestrians, cyclists but not horses because of the poop. We should think car-lite and bus- only lanes .These two hundred streets really can't be widened and the only place for parking would be these horrible multi- level parking lots .
They seem to want to do that on some streets. I can't see it happen for them all thought. People were up in arms with the changes to Spring Garden road that would cause some to park around the corner, rather than on Spring. If they couldn't even drive it, I think it could hurt the downtown core. I see people jump on the bus to go one stop which was about a block/block and a half.
@@beautifulnovascotia Here's another problem. Something like forty thousand new immigrants moved here in the last two years and the car-centric culture here convinced them that the American dream is for all of then to have an automobile. So how are tens of thousands of those new cars going to fit especially in the gridlocked, congested downtown core ? People have to have choices cars , buses, pedestrians, bicycles, ferries and trains. As it stands now cyclists and pedestrians don't have that choice because cars make it to unsafe. That's not democracy and if other cities in Europe with cold snow and ice can afford more bike lanes so can we .
Looking like a totally different city !!!
The waterfront is a gem for Halifax!!
I can't argue with that. I have spent many days and nights down there throughout my life. I think they have made many positive changes to it over the last 5 to 10 years.
I love Queensland Hope u enjoyed it to :)
We do enjoy it there. I have gone out there more than a few times to relax and listen to the waves
could you do an update for me. Thanks
Yes I can. I will go do that today. I was hoping to do that Wednesday or Thursday but was out if the city linger than planned.
@@beautifulnovascotia Beautiful job mate!!! It's looking great!
@@iworshipgloves Thank you. I appreciate it. One thing that hit me when down there, that angle between the excavators and the hill from the ramps, hasn't been visible for over 50 years. Being able to stand between the two parkades and looking up Cogswell will be mine blowing for me.
@@beautifulnovascotia I look forward to be able to walk down Barrington Street past Scotia Square into a new neighbourhood!!
@@iworshipgloves That is a wild thought. I'm excited to see that new neighborhood. I'm also excited to see people headed back to the waterfront. I was down there last weekend and was surprised at how many people were down there.
Did everyone quit working?
Lol. No. I wasn't able to make it down during the work day. They are hard at work during the day, Monday to Friday. I like getting video during thr work day but it isn't always possible.
I always found it funny how there was a McDonald's and a gym directly next to each other
Lol. They seemed to do well together. Opposites attract.
Can’t wait to see this new home for tents
Apparently, the city would rather them in the commons and in Point Pleasant Park, so this area should be OK. This site will be under construction for years, so I doubt this would make a good spot. It would be nice if the province could find a way to find homes, and mental and addiction help for those in the tents
halifax...an ugly city
No its not. There's a reason they're doing this development though, it was a crappy development from the 60's so they're tearing it down and replacing it with something better
Halifax sure can use a strip bar or two because it's about the only city in Canada that doesn't have one .
I sthis a tempory road????
From what I can find, the Cogswell rd section will go right down between the two parking structures by the casino. So the bend to the left will straighten out. The section at 0:48 will go right in front of the sewer treatment plant, up into the roundabout. That will be a part of Barrington st which will connect to the section in front of Scotia Square. The other side of the dirt lot at 0:36 will become Proctor St. which comes down the road between the parking structure behind that lot and the building beside it. The section just up from the shot at 0:59 will not drop down like that. It will go straight from Nora Barnard, to Proctor St. and will be called, Poplar St.
Well done . It's looking amazing!!!
Thanks. It is coming alone. Now they just need to remove the not so great wall of Halifax. As someone who loves the water, I can't figure out why they thought a massive wall that close to the waterfront was a good idea? I'm excited to see it open up.
Bye bye 😕
When I was young, I thought it was interesting. As I grew older, it just seemed like a poorly maintained waste. As I learn what was lost to build it, I was happy to see it go.
@@beautifulnovascotia I can't wait to see what they'll build in it's place. For now, getting around it will be a PITA.
Beautiful project ❤❤❤
You can stand on the parking garage to get a good view. It's hard do get up there though since there isn't an exit from the building to the top floor.
I have footage from there that I need to edit
Beautiful street ❤❤❤
Granville Street has such carm!!
It is an interesting street that seemed forgotten for so long. It is changing a lot with the Press Block, and that empty lot is being developed. I was surprised to see that when I shot this video. Last time I was down there, there was no evidence of any work coming up. The empty lot below it, on the other side of Hollis, is also being developed currently.
