Chainsaw Milling Engelmann Spruce in the Rocky Mountains
Переглядів 2213 роки тому
I scouted out this dead standing Engelmann Spruce tree today for a little slabbing project. The wood was challenging to mill, it was super dry and dulled the chain more than anything I have ever milled. I managed to pull a couple decent slabs out of it despite the sappy mess. #chainsawmilling #engelmanspruce #liveedgeslabs

CHAINSAW MILLING IN BOARDSHORTS: DOUGLAS FIR
Переглядів 2423 роки тому
Milling a beautiful 32" Douglas Fir followed by the hottest sauna session of my life. We soaked in a cold tub with shrubs from the forest to make a nutrient bath. Then we laid down in an ice cold creek. Since I had my board shorts on and the chainsaw mill all setup, I milled a slab in my boardshorts with hearing protection only. It was a good day indeed. @chainsawmilling ChainsawMilling.com STI...

Scouting for logs to Chainsaw Mill: English Walnut Edition
Переглядів 1723 роки тому
Somtimes I drive around town scouting for logs ready to be milled with all my chainsaw milling equipment loaded up ready to roll. This time I was successful and found a nice English Walnut section that had been left behind by a tree service company. This log produced some beautiful live edge slabs. I did a 50/50 split with the land owner.

      In this video i'm using a Stihl MS880 stock with a 50 inch Cannon superbar. I recently went back to my Husqvarna 395xp with a 36" bar and Granberg alaskan mill. Much lighter setup that can tackle 85% of all my projects.

    They remind me of my Meindl Jorasse climbing boots. Not sure if the same applies in Canada but in Europe if you have problems with your meindl boots they can do a number of repairs including re-soleing, eyelet replacement, lining & hem repair, rand replacement etc. My brother has size 15.5/16 US feet and his special order Meindl Islands have lasted years.

    I like milling too. Jack that log up and put two 24 inch rounds under it on end. Your back will thank you and you will get the clearance for your saw. I usually don't give away my tips but you seem like a nice guy. I often put small pieces of wood under near the middle. Then like a teeter totter you can have your wife put larger blocks under until you are at the right height. Then use wedges to keep it from rolling off. I am in a bit of a time warp because it says The tree was removed in October 2022. 😄

    Pants look good and would be fantastic for climbing over stumps and logs plus kneeling down for lower cuts. But I don't know what I cringed more at? The fact you are standing in sawdust with socks and then stepping into your boots with sawdust on the socks or running your saw through the log without rolling it over to finish the cut . Lol good demo on the pants

    Would you say they are worth the money or would you rather go with the Meindl Airstream generation 1 that a bit cheaper. It’s easier to find information about that boot than this one and the reviews is really good also, with makes me thinking about buying the first generation instead. The insole hasn't crossed my mind. This boot is not overly impressive. It comfortable and gets the job done for me - that's about all I have to say. It's wearing well... they look good. Soft around the ankle i'd say. Try a high tech insole for sure

      They still look good. Soft around the ankle, the inner liner above the heel is starting to clump up from the friction of sliding my foot in, but that happens to me on other boots. Overall pretty good, also pretty damn expensive. I would try another boot on my next purchase, i'm not married to them.

    I think I read these are rated as class 1, so what size chainsaw would these max out at to stop the chain?

    • @lukewilcock428
      @lukewilcock428 3 роки тому

      You are correct they are class one so I believe they would stop any chainsaw and they come in type A and type C but you only want type C it you are a climbing arborist.

    • @danielbabcock7004
      @danielbabcock7004 3 роки тому

      The class ratings are based off of chain speed, not saw size exactly. Class 0 = 16 m/s Class 1 = 20 m/s Class 2 = 24 m/s Class 3 = 28 m/s Then there are two types of pants/chaps: Type A and Type C Type A only offer protection on the front of the leg Type C offer protection on the front of the leg, and back and sides of the calf
