CYCLING and EXPLORING South Carolina CHRISTMAS 2024

I was visiting family over Christmas in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and was lucky enough to have some nice weather for a nice ride! My dad decided to tag along as well! We made the mistake of skipping lunch before this ride and paid the price for it. We were STARVING by the end.
I actually did two routes while I was down there, but the second ride was mostly road, and while it was a fun ride, there wasn't anything very exciting to make a video about. I've added a clip at the end of this video from that ride as bonus footage if you stick around to the end.

#gravelbike #bikelife youtube.com/@BikingBeyondBoundaries?si=9ISIUHVyofkWtajX?sub_confirmation=1 This was my most ambitious trip yet. The path from Lake Erie in Westfield, New York wasn't easy, but I'll never forget this experience. The first day was full of chilly headwinds and punchy hills all the way to Titusville, PA. Day two was relaxing, following the Oil City Trail, the Justus Trail, and...

How I started Cycling as an overweight cyclist...And why I LOVE IT

A short intro video to my channel. Here I'll talk about what motivated me to get started cycling, and how I got myself into my current situation. I hope to inspire others in my weight-loss journey. Please like and subscribe!
Hey all, the deteriorated bridge at Spartansburg is being repaired this spring. Happy trails!
Oh wow that's awesome! It's totally terrifying in it's current state
Kudos to you for finding an extra 10 degrees this time of year to ride, you shouldn't age shame your dad, us old people don't appreciate that. Does look like like a great route, how did you come across it? Love the cutaway also. Happy New Year mark.
Oh I wasn't age shaming him at all. I'm sorry if it sounded that way. I always enjoyed riding with my dad. I found the route on Ridewithgps.com.
Just messing with you Mark. 😂
Can’t believe you didn’t get chased by any dogs!
We only saw a few dogs, and they were behind fences. I guess we lucked out? haha
beautiful!
Thank you! South Carolina is such a beautiful state to ride in.
Working in that drone footage nicely! Strong work!
Thanks dude! It's definitely a learning curve getting the footage you want.
I'm part of the HopFly Gravel team, glad you enjoyed the route! We do a monthly ride of that route during the winter months. Love to ride some of the other gravel in York County with you next time you're in town! My friend Chris created the route, you'll be the first person who's told him he's a rockstar haha.
Oh wow that's awesome! I'm sure I'll be back at some point down that way. We will have to connect for sure! It was such a fun route. The topography down there is so different from western PA. Around my house, you can't make a route that doesn't have at least 3-4 climbs that are 0.5-1 mile long at 8-15% grade. It was a nice change!
That looked like an awesome route. I want some of those overshoe things.
The shoe covers are amazing in cold weather. Kept my feet super warm. Highly recommended! Mine are made by Bongtager and they're fleece lined.
nice countryside riding. Hooray for Dad.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed watching!
I’m going to have to try that route!
You should. It was a ton of fun
Great to see you enjoying the route. How did you find the route?
I found it on ridewithgps just searching around the area where my family lives. There were several other routes down there I'd love to try sometime.
Excellent video thank you for sharing
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I am so impressed Mark. Never give up, keep biking and keep challenging yourself. Maybe tackle this trip again during better weather. You got this.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Definitely giving this trip another attempt sometime next year if all goes well.
I love his new bike!!
It's way better for him than the other one
Your fails beat my rides! Way to show how it’s done! Cold weather clothing is always tough to get right. A little cool is better than too warm. Remember cycling makes you healthier with the caveat ‘not terrible weather’.
You're so right about the clothing. Between us, the pants were a bit too tight. Once I shed those I had a much easier time peddling. Haha. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Got here via the Trans AM Matt Ryder video. Somewhat relatable in the fitness department. Picked up mountain biking a couple years ago with zero previous experience in riding or being consistently active at all. (Barr my high school / college days when it was all pretty much free: almost 50 now). Anyway, my first rides consisted of a 5k loop which took just under an hour, with multiple stops required. Discouraged, but found riding to be amazing, so I'll be following your journey for sure. Hopefully Matt's words helped towards getting the channel back on path. Sub'd. Watching from Canada.
That's awesome progress! Welcome to my channel. I've definitely revived my channel and have added a few new trips recently. Trying to consistently put out videos, though winter is making it difficult.
You planning on doing it in winter??? Not a good idea... Why can't you wait until spring???? For God's sake, go south... You are just asking for problems...
I did it November 8th. The video is up on my channel. It went pretty well until the last day when it rained nonstop. Still ended up being a fun trip. I think I'll end up doing it again next year if I am able. I'll be in south Carolina in a few weeks. Do you know of any good routes down that way?
beautiful drone views 👍
Thank you!
Thanks for the video Mark. Fantastic scenes and good conversation as you traveled. I appreciate the way you approach this whole cycling way of life.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's so fun getting out and making these. I hope to have another trip planned once the weather gets a little nicer.
Great vid Mark, wife is right health first, looking and speaking more natural behind the camera, thought I even saw the Mat Ryder behind the back camera hold...on the icy snow.... on a gravel bike. Careful man.🤔🤣 looking forward to the next.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's definitely gotten easier to talk to the camera that I've fondly named Wilson. Bonus points if you get the reference. Haha. Definitely being careful. I almost wiped out getting a few of those shots in the snow 🤣
@@BikingBeyondBoundaries WILSON!!
Glad to see you back out there! Winter rides are a lot of fun!
I missed riding during those few weeks I was sick. I really wanted to finish this ride but my lungs weren't having it. I think without the mud I could have done it. Still debating on what I wanna do when I'm in SC at the end of the month. The roads down there look a bit scary.
@@BikingBeyondBoundaries It's great you're showing the reality of riding, it isn't always easy. Have fun and take care of yourself, that's all that matters!
Good video! Awesome shot of the cooling tower. Good travels!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
You’re out there and therein lies success !! Huge kudos for riding in wintery conditions also !! Nicely done video and the drone shots of that giant coal thing were something I had not seen done before. I rode out and backs on both the Redbank Valley Trail and the Armstrong Trail last May camping two nights at Nautical Mile Campground in Templeton and one night at Redbank Valley Municipal Park in New Bethlehem. I especially enjoyed the Redbank Valley Trail (including the Sligo Spur) for the more remote and woodsyness of the trail and of course the sculptures !! Hope you’re feeling totally recovered from the chest congestion now.
I think I need a fat bike for these kinds of rides. My gravel bike wasn't having the mud and snow. When you're camping, do you have a cookware set that you use with your jetboil? I'm currently shopping for one with a coffee cup included. I'm starting to feel a little better, but all the downtime killed my fitness. I've been doing short zwift rides indoors to build it back up. Thanks!
@ I love my fat bike for winter riding, especially in conditions like you had on this ride. I ride it when the trails are wet and muddy too. Around here, our single track mountain bike trails get groomed for snow riding too and that’s really fun.
It's definitely a learning curve, I'm fairly new to bike-touring/packing myself (also a youtuber lol) Check out "bar mitts" if your hands are getting cold, the rockbrothers bar mitts work.
I'd heard about the bar mitts. Haven't looked into them yet. I actually started watching your Cranberry Wilderness video yesterday but haven't finished it. I thought it was pretty brave to fly your drone in the snowy weather like that.
@@BikingBeyondBoundaries the snow itself won’t bother the drone (shouldn’t anyways) but the cold will. You have to keep your battery warm, so keeping it in your jacket pocket or heated in some fashion before flights is good.
And if I crash it I’ll have an excuse to upgrade lol
Which drone do you have? I just got mine a few weeks ago, its my first. I got the DJI Mini 4k. I wanted to spring for the Mini 3 or 3 Pro but I figured it was a good starter drone in case I crash it.
@ I have the dji mavic air 2. I want to get one of the minis but I’m waiting for them to upgrade the camera enough for me to justify getting my another one.
Can I ask how tall Dad is and what size bike did he get? Great to see you riding together.
He's about 6' and got a 58cm bike. I'm an inch taller and I'm comfortable on the 56 checkpoint but I have a 58 domane that fits me. It's all about geometry and physiology.
Thanks for sharing! The Allegheny River Trail is amazing and I've been exploring it more this year, eventually to go Erie to Pittsburgh. Sucks about the rain, it's never fun to get caught in it! I did the Ohio to Erie 3 years ago and did an 80 mile day mostly in the rain, miserable.
Oof...80 miles in the rain sounds miserable. Ohio to Erie is on my list hopefully for next spring! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@BikingBeyondBoundariesyeah the OTET is a great trail, as is Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany. I've got a 5 day OTET itinerary I'm happy to share, as well as any advice!
Oh awesome! Yeah I'll definitely take you up on that. Advice from someone who's ridden it is always welcome. If you're on Instagram, my info is listed in my channel. Otherwise you could email me at bikingbeyondboundaries@gmail.com

Awesome. I'll check it out. Much appreciated!
As a hunter and cyclist, my two least favorite things are wet and cold. Separate them and it’s barely tolerable but after a while I’d be over it too. You did a great job pushing as far as you could but as others have said hypothermia isn’t worth the gamble. But looks like you had gorgeous scenery and good friendship on the ride.
100% agree. The combination of the rain and cold is what really did me in. It was just too much. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Hopefully my next adventure is a bit better weather.
Well i thought you would have started in Erie Pa...fall in pa sucks...
I looked at doing that, but the official route starts there and just runs along lake Erie to where I started for like 15 miles. I decided to cut those miles out due to time constraints. Yeah..this time of year wasn't great for weather unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I enjoyed the video ,the temperature, combined with the constant rain just drains your core body temperature and then your soul, your a warrior for trying. Thank you for posting the stunning views along this route.
The cold drained me way faster than I expected. Still bummed I had to stop the trip but it was the right call. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Congratulations! And I salute you for your effort!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed watching my adventure!
@@BikingBeyondBoundariesOf course!
Still a heck of a ride. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you!
@@BikingBeyondBoundaries This is the first video I've seen from you, it showed up in my feed today, but now you got me wanting to at least try Pittsburgh to Washington along the Great Allegheny Passage. Good luck on your future rides.
Pittsburgh to DC is such a fun trip! I did that back in May. I have a short on my channel showcasing some photos from that trip (I forgot my gopro that day of all things). You should definitely give that route a try. I did Pittsburgh to Cumberland 3 times this year.
@@BikingBeyondBoundaries I'll check that out.
I live in Erie, PA and go to Franklin to ride the trails several times each summer. It was great to see places I am familiar with including the brewery you ate at. I was really pulling for you to make it. The weather was very poor that last day. Great video.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That brewery had such good food. I'd totally eat there again.
Carry a good paper map of the area and your route, just in case. WRONG TURN. Excellent low budget horror movie about a family of mutant killers in the woods. The studio did well financially with the first one so I think they made 5 or 6 sequels 😃 Keep cycling.
Yes! I have a soft spot for good horror movies. The ones from the 90s and early 2000s are some of my favorites. A paper map is a great idea. I should have probably also downloaded some of the maps with Google maps. Didn't think of that unfortunately.
I'm with you on the bikepacking. I want to get into it but so much to learn and research. Winter project for sure.
I feel that, it takes a lot of time to find the right gear.
I'm in Canada, I ride all year long. Picked up a mountain bike for the Winter rides. More clothing, less mileage, still lots of fun!
I've got to get my hands on a mountain bike! I'm always looking for a new challenge.
Congrats on the new bike! I want a gravel bike so bad!
It's not a fail if you learn something from it!
Very true. I keep sodium hydration packets with me at all times now. They've been a game changer
Just found your channel. Can't wait to watch your journey! Good luck and have fun!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the other videos! I'm hoping to get another trip in next month that should make for another fun video.
I love the Allegheny Trail! The views are amazing and the tunnels are pretty cool.
I love it too. The views are amazing. My only complaint is how bumpy it is from all the tree roots. I'd almost rather it be crushed limestone than asphalt. Still an amazing trail.
You definitely needed some castelli shoe covers or the like
I've got some on order now. Massive mistake on my part for this trip.
