HOME THEATER ---- Receiver vs Separates
This video is telling my story growing up from starting with home theater receivers to eventually upgrading to separates. That is a separate pre-processor and an amplifier. MUCH better sound! I am using Anthem AVM70 as my pre-processor and the Monolith 9X amplifier and it sounds incredible. 300w going to my Martin Logan Motion XTs and 100w going to my surrounds.

Klipsch FRONT ELEVATION speakers! (Install)
Hello! I agree with you 100%. I have the same Klipsch speakers as you, along with four 12" Klipsch subs paired with a Denon receiver. My first upgrade was a MiniDSP 2x4HD, and the bass improved tenfold. My second upgrade was replacing my receiver with an Onkyo RZ50. Dirac Live made a noticeable difference, and it felt like I had an entirely new set of speakers! My room is small (12x15 feet), so the power from the Onkyo is more than enough. I usually listen to movies at -15 dB or -10 dB, and I’m very satisfied with my system. However, I became curious about what an external amplifier could do. I bought one to power my LCR (left, center, right) and surround speakers, leaving the Onkyo’s amplifier to handle the Atmos channels. At my regular listening levels, the loudness remains the same as before, even though the external amp is rated at 150W per channel. I don’t notice a difference in power until I turn the volume up to 0 dB. At that point, I can really hear and feel the amp’s power-it gets incredibly loud! That said, I don’t typically listen to my system at such high levels. So, why do I have an external amp? Because it made a huge difference in the sound. At my usual listening level of -15 dB, the difference isn’t about power-it’s about channel separation and clarity. Dialogues are clearer, the front left and right speakers sound brighter, the surround speakers are more detailed, and the Atmos channels... Oh boy, the Atmos channels came alive! Listening to 5.1 content with DTS Neural:X mode has completely opened up the soundstage. The system feels more immersive than ever, and I couldn’t be happier after adding the external amp. Watching movies has become a whole new experience. Now, I’m wondering what a pre/pro would do for my system-LOL!
Nice! I also used the 2x4HD MiniDSP before went to separates, now the Anthem room correction is amazing. I heard that Dirac is really good too. I agree 100% more separation and clarity. I'll tell you what I love the Anthem, but they are very spendy. AVM70 is doable which is what I have, but Id love to upgrade to the AVM 90. lol
I am curious wether or not its worth it, since i already own a Arcam Avr 20, which has excellent stereo performance, noticably better than my old Denon Avr. Still contemplating getting an external 4 channel amplifier for my bed Player, since i don't use a center.
I would definitely still get a 4ch amp. Thats just my opinion but you'll get better sound with more power to your speakers than the Arcam is giving them.
The fact I was utilising arcam pa410 4 channel power amp for my Atmos channels gave me a perfect opportunity to test it on my front stage Sonus Faber speakers. Which btw was being processed by it's avr20 stable mate as well. Let's just say I was so impressed I ended up buying another one. Only this time, rather than Atmos, this one's for the front stage duties. The first thing I noticed when I hooked it up was how the leading edges were more refined and, of course, how the snare drum now has a distinctive snap to it. Quality interconnects are key (noise floor is everything!)
Nice tidy setup that. I have seen some where the speakers and subs are that massive overpower the TV making it look like a 12" pc monitor 🙄
haha ya can't go overboard
I have a Denon x4400h connected to a 3ch Hypex NCx500 amp to run the front three speakers...that's about as separate as I'm going to get....sounds great.
If it works it works!
separates give you the flexibility in home theater. not as much now with wireless digital communication but back in the 90,s when lucas films pushed cinema standards into the home market there were two parts of the system based on the commercial setup. one was the source chain and the other the B-chain. the B-chain typically would consists of analog based units like amplifiers, subwoofer and the surround speakers. those units are set. the source chain that consists of processors decoders and various digital playback components. are at the mercy of the steering tech thats available. Over the years A/V formats change. dolby pro logic goes to dolby surround that leads to dolby digital leading to extended panning formats like 6.1 7.1 and so on. source formats also change laserdisc to blue ray and various streaming formats. there tons of AV units released in the 90,s that only supported dolby and not DTS. these formats are fluid and can change at the drop of a hat. with separates you dont have to worry just piggyback another processor that supports the latest formats onto the pre-amp. Don't have to worry about the dedicated channels assignments some receivers may have because you will have a separate amp that has a flat response to all channels with no dedicated inputs for rear or front channels. However there can be some ergonomic challenges when going separate. can't just stack amps on top of other units because of weight and you dont want to stack source units on top of amps that vent from the top. also one needs to start paying attention to load requirements on circuits. easily run over a 20 amp circuit when adding amplifiers. i would always dedicate a circuit to B-chain equipment that yield at least 30 amps allowing you system to grow as needed. you can also integrate commercial amps that are for more powerful for the cost minus the UI bells and whistles built into the consumer brands that jack up the costs. it's a different world that gets you closer to the commercial experience
I have a 5.1 setup Marantz Cinema 70s AV Receiver connected by Preouts to a 3ch Emotiva BasX A3 Power Amp then Marantz Cinema 70s just powers the 2 Surround Speakers sounds great in my living room
@@Music.Movies.67 nice! I’d recommend a second sub! It’s amazing how much more bass and better quality sound you get with 2 subs especially in a living room where you have sofas and furniture that’ll cause your subwoofer sound to suck out or drop
Hey so whats the best way to listen to music? I heard to start talking about it but lost me. I have a nice beginner set up but the martin logan that you have something like that is my goal next but i have been noticing as well that my music suffers for sure
For music best sound quality is from a Stereo Amp
@@michaelmarquez6133 yes the best way for music is to utilize a stereo amp going to your speakers. Then you can Bluetooth or airdrop from your phone to your receiver. That’s the most basic way to do it. Use your phone app Spotify or Apple Music or wutever
Getting a receiverwith pre-outs is a good middle ground when considering upgrading to separates. You can get the recevier and use its internal amps for a while, then take your time to find the amps you want and add them over time. Then once all your speakers are externally amped, you can start looking for your dedicated processor you want to upgrade to.
@@FURognar that’s absolutely true!
Eeeh , my new Denon AVC -A1H is enough power and great sounds so don't need 2 gear
@@LEMON48 that’s great!
I thought the same with my Marantz Cinema 40, until I added an AudioControl Pantages G4 5 x 230w ext amp for my bed layer speakers. Yeah, my system sounded great before the amp, but after the amp, so much more background details became present and everything came more alive, crisper, dialog more pronounced, etc.
@@PinkstonFilms awesome!
@@PinkstonFilms Damn , this sucker cost almost as my entire A1H 😅 but Yes might be better sound
@ it was expensive but I got it because of its size and power. It’s 50lbs vs 90lbs for a Monolith amp. And being a Class H amp, I don’t notice any heat from it since it’s more efficient.
What dbs for the Subwoofer? 75db c weight?
Technically yes but a lot of people increase it to 80 or 85db
Wow ok! A quick question. For me to be able to even reach 75db, the subwoofer are super loud and the floor is vibrating alot. Is that normal for 70db when Audio is set to 0db? Also, in Audyssey app I only are able to measure and fix up to 250hz, is that normal?
Dude Murph is actually so precious! I gotta ask, when getting a pup, should you specifically ask for a friendly and playful pup? It’s scary to put all the trust in the breeder to pick out a puppy that matches the lifestyle/temperament requirements yk, but I just wanna hear your experience! I would appreciate any advice!

I’ve been lagging on this for years. I bought an SPL for this reason but figured the auto calibration sounded good enough. I was wrong, it’s so much better using the meter. I especially found the setting for the mic helpful. Otherwise, I would have used the default “A” and fast response settings. Thank you
i’m getting one and i’m super exited and ur bag matches perfectly to the green and black
great! Yes the bag matches perfectly thanks for watching!
@@coreyskinner np
Question Why do you use C weighted and not A weighted . I see alot of calibraters using A Weighted. I see that C weighted is more sensitive.
Well it’s because of the level of decibels we are trying to pick up. Around the 70 range. A weighted filters out low frequency which we want to hear and pick up
I review a lot of CaddyTek carts on my channel. I personally think this is the best one because of the front, swivel wheel! Nice video and congrats on the channel! Almost 1k subs!
