Mandy Patinkin Sings You've Got to be Carefully Taught; Children Will Listen Medley
OMG, I'm crying. "You've Got to be Taught" has always been a powerful song for me. My BF was in South Pacific in a summer production, saw it a dozen or so times. The point was memorable. Merged with "Children Will Listen" it just gets me right in the heart. My dad tried so hard to "teach me" to hate (not so much fear), I'm so glad that lesson failed. I was a huge disappointment to him for that LOL. I'm glad of it. But damn, people need to pay attention to this.
For Josh Groban and all other nen who are taught to hate physicaly ugly wo mm en by their beautiful women. By their beautiful mothers.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 Ugly stech
Mandy is a Broadway legend
❤
Wow what a performance and so moving.
Hello to whomever posted this. I hope you see this comment. Please post the whole concert!! I'd love to have the whole thing!!
❤🎉
Rodger’s and Hammerstein had the guts in the 50’ to include songs like this and Old Man River in their musicals. These songs were very controversial.
Babatunde Olatunji was my uncle and his music was always spectacular. Listen to one his very first recordings, "Drums of Passion". I'm sure you will enjoy it.
The best narrator is Wiliam Warfield, also on video, also with Bernstein conducting. He does it with great feeling and he's the only person ever to have memorized this short text.
While this video was posted over 9 years ago, it was originally broadcast in 1998. As one who has a Morehouse grad as a family member and a friend who performed in the original broadcast with another group-- she pointed me to this clip on her FB page!-- I took great interest when she posted it. When I listen, I often wonder how (or even if) these then-young men are doing now. And I certainly still enjoy coming back to watch, several years later! Thank you, Mr. Trimborn, for posting this video!
Rest and peace my cousin Dennis G Moore
Perfect.
Saw him sing this in Lawrence, KS, April 1, 2024.
I was back stage, watching this historic performance. The night before, I took Aaron to the Lincoln Memorial to talk with him about why and how he had created this extraordinary work. Then the afternoon before this performance with Lenny and Aaron, our WQED camera crews were on stage during the final rehearsals, captured these two giants of American music exchange quips on how this music ought to sound. I had raised $8 million to produce the new PBS series, KENNEDY CENTER TONIGHT, that would also endure for 12 difference programs, three years, in my "give back to the Kennedys." This night brought tears to my eyes, and still does.
What did he tell you about his motivation to write it?
👏 BRAVO 👏
The world needs this today.
He just sang it again on his channel. It is a wonderful rendition.
As an American Jew, I always thought of this as a cautionary song; now I think other groups hear the same words and use them as inspiration in training their children to hate me & my people 😢
Mandy Patinkin is a fine actor and singer. He was great in DAED LIKE ME. Wished he had done the role of ARTIE in WAREHOUSE 13 . Had been interestiing - maybe in a REMAKE?
Here in October 2023 thinking we are living in some alternate universe
I miss him so much
Aaron Copland, a great composer of music that was truly American.
In USA 2023, with the sanctioned rise of HATE Made Normal, triggered through the ideological values of certain politicals: this has sadly become even 'more' relevant! 😪❤🩹💙 'Carefully Taught' from Rogers and Hammerstein's '1949'!! lyrics in musical South Pacific.
As I would not be a slave neither would I be a slave owner. Sort of sums up why we became a nation in the first place.😅
This is the best recording I've heard of this song. The quality and spirit is quintessentially Christmas.
Wow they’ve been doing this for longer than I’ve been alive. I never realized how long the Cathedral had this Memorial Day tradition. It’s really sad that it’s no more. I loved visiting this church through the years.
Why is this joker so serious? From intonation to elocution to stage presence to lack of range he's awful. This is pitiful stuff, such strained treacle it turns the stomach. He has some control in the high range, that's it. He's awful, unlistenable.
Thank you. We saw this every year, and Mr. Shaw died just before my father did in 1999. Thank you thank you. I was really homesick, P..S. My dad had perfect pitch, and in the '50's was the only kid who could read music and carry the tuba...so when he got very emotional during concerts, he'd tenderly "bom bom bom" the tuba parts.
Sound only coming through the left channel
Takes my breath away! The joy of this number is contagious!
Two undeniable masters!
Fabulous performance - very moving.
Música linda
My parents attended Church of Today and my mom played this cassette all the time. White Eagle, Jack Boland, and Wayne Dyer…you are remembered and loved in 2022.
Love, Blessings, eyes to see, ears to hear, hands to fold in prayer and quietness of mind, sincerity of your best heart, to ALL! Terri s.
Loving this in 2022!
👏👏👏👏👏💕
Magnificent ❣️❣️❣️❣️
Outstanding!!! Bravo!!
Two of my favorites. My parents were good role models.
While my favorite “voice” is baritone, Mandy Patinkin is a treasure in every sense of the word.
He's a rabbi
Jesus!! Jesus!!!
Nice solid timpani stroke at the very end!!!
He IS PRAYYYYYYIN WHILE SINGING THIS! BEAUTIFUL!
🥰👍🏿👏🏿👏🏽😢😩👏🏽🎶CAREFUL THE SPELL YOU CAST IT MAY LAST LONNNNNNGER THAN YOU👏🏽🎵😩🎶👏🏽👏🏼😩🎶👏🏽🔥😩👏🏼👏🏿😩🥰👏🏽🎶😩🔥😩🎶
Mr. Shaw was a magician. Not only with an orchestra, but with a chorus. We spent more time on intonation and diction, which obviously shows. Beyond that, the chorus was volunteer. We did not get paid. The experience was payment enough. I travelled from Nashville every Monday night for rehearsals, and one lady flew in from Boston every week. What an experience!~
I don’t think those words mean what you think they mean. Critical race theory.
You don't know what CRT is.
Thank you thank you thank you.
It's been over 20 years of this concert, someone should upload the whole thing. One of the most perfect Christmas concerts ever programmed.
