Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue is located in Western New York. Our goal is to provide a refuge to draft horses that have been slated to be slaughtered. The focus is to rehabilitate, retrain and re-home draft horses that are in slaughterhouses, feedlots and auctions. For those horses that are not adoptable, Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue will be their forever home.

Abe and Louie have been exploring the front pasture and enjoying themselves. Abe has been doing okay with getting his allergy shots but is starting to grow weary of them.

After spending 667 days at the rescue, Ellie and Apollo were adopted earlier in the week. Abe started his Nextmune allergy shots this week. We hopefully will see results in a few months.
Apollo's abscess recovery and Abe's allergies

After several weeks, Apollo has finally healed from his hoof abscess. He is back to eating and walking normally. Abe begins his allergy treatments this upcoming week. He will need to get shots to build up his tolerance to apples, oats, mosquitoes, sage, and dog dander,

Apollo is feeling much better and is not limping. We have spoken to Dr. Lauren and she has not received a treatment plan for Abe yet. She is going to call the company that tested Abe for allergies and will get back to us when she has something.
Apollo is walking better and we received Abe's test results.

With red-lighting all four legs twice a day, Apollo is finally starting to walk normally. He still has a little hiccup, but not nearly as bad as it was. Abe's allergy test results are in and he is allergic to apples, oats, and barely. Fortunately, because Abe's feed is oat-free, it doesn't need to be changed. We are waiting to speak with Dr. Lauren on how we are going to treat Abe.
Progress with Apollo's abscesses and Abe's coughing

This week Apollo had not one but two abscesses that needed to be dealt with. Fortunately, he is feeling better after some red light treatment. Abe's coughing from heaves has improved since he has been on Heave Ho. We are still awaiting his test results to see what he is actually allergic to.
Wacky weather and farrier visit

This week we had a dramatic weather swing. We went from 60 degrees and sunny to a winter weather advisory with blowing snow. We even lost power for a few hours. Before all the blustery weather, our farrier came out and trimmed Ellie, Apollo, and Louie.

It has continued with the lack of protection for two local draft horses. Concerned citizens have reported them, but nothing has happened. Apollo is still dealing with lameness due to Cellulitis and his damaged right front leg. While he is making progress because of the antibiotics he is on and the massages that he gets, he is still swollen on his underside and is walking stiffly.

On Thursday, February 22nd, the founder of Twist of Fate Sanctuary who abused Ellie and Apollo was found GUILTY on 8 of the 17 counts of animal cruelty. She was sentenced to 60 hours of community service and a fine of $16,000, of which $12,500 is to be paid to the Salem Humane Society. The verdict was a mere slap on the wrist. After weeks of treating Apollo's lameness, Dr. Lauren came and took x-rays of Apollo's pastern. It turns out that a piece of his bone broke off. Based on the images, this has happened to him before. We are hoping that Apollo's body remodels the bone again.

These sentences are too Lenient,,,, she should be in jail for 10 years at least, those payments will never be made, appeal it!,,, Shame the Judge, Charge the Judge for not doing his duty,,,, she should never be allowed to own any livestock or Pets,,,,

They should have banned her from having animals.
Even if someone is convicted of an animal abuse felony, they can simply move to another state and do it all over again! We need a nationwide system to enforce probation conditions. One case I know of, the woman was convicted of felony animal abuse and banned from owning or working with animals. She fled the state. No state will come after such a felon. In truth they are likely glad she is no longer their problem and they save on the costs of her probation, drug and alcohol tests etc I guarantee she is once again back in the grooming and breeding business in another state

Why would you allow other animals to be abused ! She is prob mentally unstable ! These animals deserve better ! Even when we had a hardship I asked for help our spca helped us. I in turn offered to give my time to help train either their staff in cpr first aid as I’m a firefighter paramedic . I also would give them my time or skills at anytime they helped us in time of need as I was forced to retire w ptsd . Equine therapy works. 👨🏻🚒🙏🏼🇺🇸
there should be an animal abuse list & she and others abusers should be on it & be forbidden from having any animal again. the judge must be an animal abuser too.
How did they let the owners keep the rest of the animal's? I just wish the best for Apolo and Ellie! She needs to serve jail time and more. The judge needs his head examined. SMH

I've been watching others that have logging and farm working draft horses... One has cellulite... and they have a treatment regime... They catch it early... and vet wraps his rear leg... and they do it daily to stop and reduce the swelling... and meds too! Both pain and preventative as well... It's called Working Horses with Jim... and it's the Percheron called Ken that gets it from time to time... Utube doesn't like links in the comments...

Florida is horrible. The law says they are property and you can starve them. I had three horses at my place that were just racks of bones. The owner thanked me by calling the police and telling them I would not give her the horses. I did the horses a favor by letting them stay in my pasture, and feeding them every day. The owner didn't come care for them, one of the reasons they were starved in their previous place. She expected others to feed and care for them, without compensation. I didn't charge her anything, I hope they made it.

The 2023 Florida Statutes (including Special Session C) Title XLVI CRIMES Chapter 828 ANIMALS: CRUELTY; SALES; ANIMAL ENTERPRISE PROTECTIO 828.12 Cruelty to animals.- (1) A person who unnecessarily overloads, overdrives, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, or carries in or upon any vehicle, or otherwise, any animal in a cruel or inhumane manner, commits animal cruelty, a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both. Thank you for the follow up. The rescues should have been reimbursed and supported for the animals rehabilitation. She should also have been thrown in jail and banned from having any animals. I hope the fraud and civil cases are prosecuted and justice is done. Poor Apollo, I hope he is able to recover. The ASPCA should be helping you and all the rescues that have these poor soles.
