Enjoy the sounds and my final thoughts on the Leo Jaymz Rickenbacher bass kit. The kit was purchased off Amazon and I proceeded to attack it. I carved a gut cut which turned out well and had many finishing misshaps. The issues I had with the kit itself were a bad neck pickup and the bridge and pick guard being misaligned. This required plugging and re drilling holes in the body. The end product...

    I have been using Rev Willies .007's on my guitars. I love them. But then again, I am more of a bluesy player, so not a lot of high gain. And even though this guitar is ready for the metal world, it would be good in blues/classic and southern rock also. Just my opinion.

      I couldn't agree more. I had 7s on a Tele and had it for Nashville tuning. As BB King told Billy Gibbons "Why are you working so hard?", and convinced him to use extra light strings (probably why those strings are called 'Rev Willies'. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I sure don't but Schecter must have one but pricey I'll bet. This body style was the Avenger I think back in the day. You might be able to source a used one. Given the length you might want to try cases designed for long fan fret basses like Dingwall. Thanks for watching and good luck in your search!

    Looks like a fun build. But to me, it is not really a cigar box guitar. I have built a lot of cigar box guitar over the years. I used real cigar boxes for mine. Made my own necks and so on. This kit like I said looks like a fun thing to do. But traditional cigar box guitars were all made from stuff like a cigar box. They are a lot of fun to make. There are no rules on how one comes out! They all have their own MOJO! Be nice to see this one done.

    • @3randommonkeys
      @3randommonkeys Місяць тому

      Yes, it's a cigar box shaped guitar. Making one from scratch and found parts would be interesting! I have to finish this one first. Thanks for watching!!

      If there are no rules..... Then why isn't this a cigar box guitar?

    • @music4me210
      @music4me210 Місяць тому

      @@chasewinters7050 Lol! The box used was never used for cigars! Back when the cigar boxes were used for a string instrument, it was what was available. It was a poor man's guitar. There is a MOJO that goes with a real cigar box that gets lost when someone makes a box and calls it a cigar box guitar. Plus, this is a manufactured thing that is made to look like a cigar box guitar. It does look like a fun project. But to me, it not a real cigar box guitar. It's a lot more fun to find a real cigar box and make it into something with a lot of MOJO. That is the way they were made a long time ago. Too many things go from something fun to going into production and making lots of money on it. This is nothing but a model. You buy it, put it together. No use of woods you find in your home, not looking for cool things that help make it a cigar box guitar with tones of MOJO. Look at some past cigar box guitars and how they are made. Look at what they used to make them. They are way cool! But one can put the name of “cigar box guitar” on this. But to me, it will only be a manufactured model of what is supposed to be a cigar box guitar! So I guess there is that rule. LOL But what I meant from no rules, you can make it any way you want. You're not stuck to something like trying to copy a guitar like a Finder or Gibson. It can be anything from one string to 6 or more. But most are now made with 3 to 4 strings. I have made them 3, 4, and 6 sting cigar box guitars from scratch. Some have no truss rods, some do. Some are acoustic and some are electric. See, no rules. I have used all kinds of things to make the nut's bridge, sound holes and so on. They are a form of folk art. I guess this is a way to get into making a cigar box guitar and that it will teach you some things. But why not cross over and make one from scratch? It's not hard to do.

    What you do is take apart an old can opener like the ones currently sold at the dollar stores, inside them you will find a nylon bracket with two hollow posts connected to it, just carefully cut a slice of the post and if needed you can file them thinner! I've replaced a few of those myself! If you don't have an old can opener to tear up, your hardware stores should have some small nylon bushings that come in various sizes, if you can find a compartment box in the nuts and bolts isle that has these bushings, have a look through them, you can slice and file those if needed!

We've toyed with Irish Folk, as well as gigging with such an eclectic set list that the club owners had difficulty finding compatible bands with whom to play. Did you ever finish this? I just bought and received this exact kit. Assembled it and tried to set intonation and was chasing my tail until I realized the strings go over a nut not the Zero Fret and that makes the scale about 1/4 inch long on the open strings making them very flat. Makes the guitar imposable to play. WTF. Contacted Leo Jaymz in the USA and trying to work it out. They want me to sent the kit back for a refund!!! Well I spent 8 hours building and setting it up and have stained and linseed oiled the body and neck. How am I supposed to return this!!! They offered me $20 for my frustrations. Wow really. I asked them to send me a new neck. We will see. At the 1:53 mark in your video I can see yours will have the same issue. PULL THE NUT OUT! (or maybe the nut is cut super deep on yours?) So... While that was going on I was frustrated and I'm and engineer with a mechanical issue... Lets dig in. I get my verniers out and start measuring things up and realize the Zero fret is taler and in the right place and if I simply remove the nut altogether it should work. Can this be true? I removed the crappy soft plastic nut and redo all the intonation, again (getting good at this). spend an hour or so getting the bridge setup an bingo. Plays and sounds great!!! Crazy Typically with a Zero fret guitar you have a nut but it is cut deep so the strings "fret" on the zero fret but keep the strings aligned. On this guitar, with the way the string tree is designed they are already are captured sided to side in the slots. It plays perfectly with the nut removed. The pickups are semi low output and pretty microphonic but man I'm getting some good sounds with my DAW. They should work for me as I'm doing recordings in my RV, no playing live. The guitar plays fantastic, tuning is rock solid and I love the small form factor for recording in tight spaces. I made it the guitar I needed. The neck and ebony fretboard with nice frets is very good. I'll be doing my own video soon.

      I'll have Dana respond as well, but..It's my understanding that a zero fret is the nut and should be higher. What looks like a nut is more of a string guide to keep the strings in position. I would cut the nut deeper so the zero fret is higher and the nut can act as a string guide. Follow my advice at your own risk as I'm a drummer. Thanks for watching!

      Great job! Yes, I believe the zero fret should be the new nut. Why have a nut if that's the case? Well, in the case of my strandberg, the zero fret IS the nut, and the nut just routes/spaces the strings. I think the Leo Jaymz kit is trying to duplicate the same thing. Again, kudos on figuring it out. Oh, and, no. I haven't finished the kit yet. I'm in the process of moving and building a new studio and workshop, so it might be a little while until I have follow up videos. If I run into your issue, I'll use your fix. Thanks!

      Dana has vowed to play it but he took it apart to work on the finish. He's in the middle of moving now so things are on hold. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching!!

    While it probably fixes the sticky feel, it damages the finish of the neck which I'm not too fond of

      Yes sir, it does put fine scratches in the poly. Several folks have said it will buff out if you want it sticky again. Bill hasn't had the guts to do it to any of his basses. Thanks for watching!

      Damages a finish that never should have been there in the first place on the neck not the front. Nobody is looking at the back of the neck besides your fingers sticking to it.

      @@WillBhart There you go playing the logic card again, and you are right. Guitars are tools weather they cost two hundred or two thousand. Playability should be the most important thing.....and yet, so hard to do. Thanks for watching!

    Priced the way they are it's hard not to grab one. Of course you might have to do a little work. Be aware though this is how guitar collecting starts.😂 Thanks for watching!
