As crazy as this mission was, it was pretty standard for these guys. Special Forces were pretty new so a lot of the tactics were being made up on the fly. There are so many great books by guys who were in MACV SOG. John Plaster has a really good one to start off called Secret Commandos. Franklin Miller also has a good book. He went to Vietnam as a Marine, woumd up in SOG, & ultimately received the Medal of Honor. His book goes by very quickly. It's constant action. John Stryker Meyer also has some good options. Be warned, it's addictive once you start reading about these guys. I went down the rabbit hole a couple of years ago & I've read way more books than I ever dreamed. Every man who volunteered to be in MACV SOG are some of the bravest & absolutely craziest the US has ever produced. They should be household names. The helicopter pilots who dropped the guys off & plucked them out often under heavy fire also had balls of steel. Actually, all of the pilots who provided air support were heroes. Any time guys were on the ground, pilots never hesitated to fly into the meat grinder to try to get them out. Take some time to get familiar with MACV SOG. It will blow your mind what they faced down & what they accomplished.
